Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE THE STUDENT WITH FUNDAMENTAL CONCEPTS OF GENERAL MICROBIOLOGY IN ORDER TO STUDY THE EVENTS RELATED TO THE ONSET OF INFECTIOUS AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF CHEMOTHERAPY. THE PATHOLOGY MODULE AIMS TO PROVIDE KNOWLEDGE OF THE MAIN EXOGENOUS AND ENDOGENOUS CAUSES OF HUMAN DISEASES AND TO FRAME THE PATHOGENESIS ACCORDING TO THE POTENTIAL SITES OF THERAPEUTIC INTERVENTION.
AT THE END OF THE COURSE THE STUDENT WILL KNOW:
-STRUCTURES AND FUNCTIONS OF DISTINCTIVE COMPONENTS, AND VIRULENCE FACTORS OF THE MAIN MICROORGANISMS AND VIRUSES;
- THE MAIN MECHANISMS OF DAMAGE TO THE HUMAN BODY, THE ETIO-PATHOGENESIS OF CELLULAR AND MOLECULAR ALTERATIONS, THE CHANGE IN HOMEOSTASIS OF INTEGRATED PROCESSES IN ORGANS AND SYSTEMS.
AT THE END OF THE COURSE THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- IDENTIFY MICROBIAL CHARACTERISTICS THAT CAN BE USED AS TARGETS OF POTENTIAL DRUGS;
- ADDRESS ISSUES RELATED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF PATHOGENETIC PROCESSES CAUSED BY MICROORGANISMS AND VIRUSES.
-ELABORATE THE PATHOGENETIC NETWORKS ACCORDING TO SPECIFIC CAUSES OF DAMAGE
-IDENTIFY THE POTENTIAL CELLULAR OR MOLECULAR SITES FOR THERAPEUTIC INTERVENTIONS.

Prerequisites
THE PREREQUISITES OF ALL THE EXAMS OF THE I YEAR ARE REQUIRED.

Teaching Methods
THE COURSE INCLUDES LECTURES FOR A TOTAL OF 80 HOURS (10 CREDITS), WHICH TAKE PLACE IN THE CLASSROOM WITH THE HELP OF POWERPOINT PROJECTIONS.
ATTENDANCE OF LESSONS IN THE CLASSROOM IS MANDATORY. IN ORDER TO TAKE THE FINAL EXAM, THE STUDENT MUST HAVE ATTENDED AT LEAST 70% OF THE HOURS PROVIDED FOR IN THE COURSE
Verification of learning
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE IS CERTIFIED BY PASSING A SINGLE EXAM WITH EVALUATION IN THIRTIETHS. THE EXAM INCLUDES AN ORAL TEST LASTING AN AVERAGE OF 20-30 MINUTES, DURING WHICH, FOR THE MICROBIOLOGY MODULE, QUESTIONS WILL BE ASKED ABOUT THE ORIGIN OF MICROBIOLOGY AS SCIENCE; ABOUT CLASSIFICATION, STRUCTURE, PHYSIOLOGY, VIRULENCE FACTORS UNDERLYING BACTERIAL AND FUNGAL PATHOLOGY; ABOUT THE MORPHOLOGY AND CLASSIFICATION OF VIRUSES AND THE DIFFERENT REPLICATION MECHANISMS, STARTING FROM THE CLASSIFICATION OF BALTIMORE.
FOR THE GENERAL PATHOLOGY MODULE, THE EXAM INCLUDES AN ORAL TEST LASTING AN AVERAGE OF 20-30 MINUTES, DURING WHICH KNOWLEDGE OF CELLULAR PATHOGENIC MECHANISMS, PHLOGISTIC PROCESSES AND COMPLEX ALTERATIONS WILL BE VERIFIED.
THE MINIMUM MARK FOR PASSING EACH MODULE IS 18/30 AND WILL BE ASSIGNED, FOR THE MICROBIOLOGY MODULE, TO THE STUDENT WHO SHOWS KNOWLEDGE ON CLASSIFICATION, STRUCTURE, PHYSIOLOGY, BACTERIAL, FUNGAL AND VIRAL, BUT LIMITED ABILITY TO CONNECT THE ACTION OF THE DIFFERENT VIRULENCE FACTORS WITH THE MANIFESTATION OF THE PATHOLOGY. THE HONORS CAN BE ATTRIBUTED TO STUDENTS WHO WILL REACH THE MAXIMUM MARK OF 30/30 AND DEMONSTRATE THAT THEY HAVE COMPLETE MASTERY OF THE MECHANISMS OF COMPETITION AND MICROBIAL VIRULENCE, DEMONSTRATING THAT THEY ARE ABLE TO INDEPENDENTLY APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS ACQUIRED EVEN IN CONTEXTS OTHER THAN THOSE PROPOSED IN CLASS.
FOR THE GENERAL PATHOLOGY MODULE THE MINIMUM MARK OF 18/30 WILL BE ATTRIBUTED, TO THE STUDENT WHO SHOWS THE ABILITY TO RELATE SPECIFIC ETIOLOGICAL FACTORS TO THE PATHOGENETIC AND PROGRESSION OF THE MORBID PROCESS. THE PRAISE CAN BE ATTRIBUTED TO STUDENTS WHO WILL REACH THE MAXIMUM MARK OF 30/30 AND DEMONSTRATE THAT THEY HAVE COMPLETE MASTERY OF PATHOGENEAE, THE CELLULAR AND MOLECULAR MECHANISMS INVOLVED, THE FACTORS OF PROGRESSION AND RESOLUTION OF SPECIFIC DISEASES, DEMONSTRATING COMPLETE ACQUISITION OF ADEQUATE TERMINOLOGY AND THE ABILITY TO INDEPENDENTLY APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS EVEN IN CONTEXTS OTHER THAN THOSE PROPOSED IN CLASS. FOR THE GENERAL PATHOLOGY MODULE, STUDENTS REGULARLY ATTENDING (AT LEAST 70% OF ATTENDANCE) ARE OFFERED THE OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE TWO WRITTEN TESTS (NORMALLY ADMINISTERED AT THE END OF MARCH AND THE END OF APRIL) CONSISTING OF 30 MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS (TRIAL TIME NOT EXCEEDING 45 MINUTES). THESE LEARNING PROCESS CHECK TESTS, IF PASSED WITH A POSITIVE RESULT, WILL EXEMPT THE STUDENT DURING THE FINAL ORAL EXAM, SUPPORTED IN THE FIRST 2 USEFUL SCHEDULED EXAMINATION DATE (JUNE AND JULY) BY THE FURTHER EVALUATION OF THE TOPICS COVERED IN THE INTERNAL QUESTIONNAIRES.
THE FINAL GRADE IS GIVEN BY THE AVERAGE OF THE VOTES REPORTED FOR EACH MODULE.
