Objectives
EXPECTED LEARNING RESULTS AND COMPETENCE:
THE AIM OF THE COURSE IS TO STUDY THE CONSTITUENT ELEMENTS AND PROCESSES CHARACTERISING WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANTS AND TO INTRODUCE THE PRINCIPLES OF TREATMENT AND DISPOSAL OF MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING CAPACITIES:
THE STUDENT:
- WILL ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGE OF THE MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF URBAN WASTE WATER;
- WILL ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGE OF THE UNITS IN A WASTE WATER TREATMENT PLANT;
- WILL ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGE OF THE PRINCIPLES AND MECHANISMS UNDERPINNING THE PURIFICATION PROCESSES;
- ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGE OF THE INTEGRATED MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM.

KNOWLEDGE AND APPLIED CAPACITY OF UNDERSTANDING:
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- DESIGN THE MAIN UNITS IN AN URBAN WASTE WATER TREATMENT PLANT;
- EXAMINE WASTEWATER TREATMENT PROCESSES AND TECHNOLOGIES.

JUDGMENT SKILLS:
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- IDENTIFY THE WASTEWATER TREATMENT SCHEME IN RELATION TO THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE COMMUNITY SERVED;
- IDENTIFYY WEAKNESSES IN THE OPERATION OF THE MAIN WASTE WATER TREATMENT UNITS;
- IDENTIFY THE MOST APPROPRIATE SOLUTIONS FOR THE DESIGN OF URBAN WASTE WATER TREATMENT PLANTS.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- DESCRIBE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF A PROJECT BY HIGHLIGHTING THE FUNCTIONAL LINKS BETWEEN THE DIFFERENT COMPONENTS;
- ORAL PRESENTATION OF A TOPIC RELATED TO THE TOPICS COVERED IN THE COURSE;
- WORKING IN A TEAM.

THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED TO CONTEXTS DIFFERENT FROM THOSE PRESENTED DURING THE COURSE;

Prerequisites
THE TEACHING OF "CHEMISTRY FOR ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING" OR “CHEMISTRY AND MATERIALS TECHNOLOGY” IS PREPARATORY TO TAKING THE EXAM. FOR THE PROFITABLE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE SET OBJECTIVES, KNOWLEDGE RELATING TO BASICS PHYSICS IS SUGGESTED.

QUALITATIVE CHARACTERISTICS OF WASTEWATERS: DESCRIPTION OF THE MAIN PARAMETERS USEFUL FOR THE CHARACTERIZATION OF WASTEWATERS (BOD, COD, SST, ETC.) AND THE EFFECTS OF DISCHARGES INTO WATER BODIES (8 HOURS)
QUANTITATIVE CHARACTERISTICS: CHARACTERIZATION OF THE HYDRAULIC LOAD INCOMING THE TREATMENT PLANTS; MIXED SEWER AND SEPARATE SEWER; ESTIMATION OF THE INCOMING FLOWRATE (3 HOURS)
PRELIMINARY TREATMENTS: LIFTING, EQUALIZATION, SCREENING, SANDS AND OIL REMOVALS (5 HOURS)
PRIMARY TREATMENTS: SEDIMENTATION THEORY AND TECHNOLOGICAL ASPECTS (LONGITUDINAL, RADIAL, UPWARD FLOW TANKS) (10 HOURS)
SECONDARY TREATMENTS: BIOLOGICAL PROCESSES (BIODEGRADATION KINETICS); SUSPENDED CULTURE PROCESSES (ACTIVATED SLUDGE); MODELING OF ACTIVATED SLUDGE PROCESSES; AERATION SYSTEMS; PROCESSES WITH ADHESE CULTURES (13 HOURS)
DISINFECTION: DISINFECTION PROCESSES; CHLORINATION AND TECHNOLOGICAL ASPECTS (CHLORINATION TANKS) (3 HOURS)
SLUDGE TREATMENT: THICKENING; DIGESTION (AEROBIC AND ANAEROBIC); DEHYDRATION (MECHANICAL AND NATURAL) (7 HOURS)
INTRODUCTION TO THE INTEGRATED CYCLE OF MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE: DEFINITIONS, PRINCIPLES OF CIRCULAR ECONOMY (6 HOURS)
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE INCLUDES LESSONS (40 HOURS/4 CFU) AND CLASSROOM AND/OR LABORATORY EXERCISES (20 HOURS/2 CFU). AS PART OF THE EXERCISES, THE STUDENTS, DIVIDED INTO SMALL GROUPS, WILL DEAL WITH THE SIZING OF THE UNITS' OF A WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT IN ORDER TO STIMULATE THE ABILITY TO CRITICAL JUDGMENT AND ACTIVELY INVOLVE STUDENTS IN THE TEACHING PROCESS. THERE WILL ALSO BE VISITS TO THE LABORATORY OF SANITARY ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING AND TECHNICAL VISITS TO SANITARY ENGINEERING PLANTS (WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANTS, LANDFILLS) IN THE TERRITORY.
Verification of learning
AN ORAL INTERVIEW WILL BE USED TO ASSESS THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE OBJECTIVES SET. TO PASS THE EXAM, THE STUDENT MUST DEMONSTRATE THAT THEY HAVE UNDERSTOOD AND KNOW HOW TO APPLY THE MAIN CONCEPTS SET OUT IN THE COURSE. THE GRADE, EXPRESSED IN THIRTIETH WITH POSSIBLE PRAISE, WILL DEPEND ON THE MATURITY ACQUIRED ON THE CONTENTS OF THE COURSE, ALSO TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE QUALITY OF THE ORAL EXPOSITION AND THE AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT DEMONSTRATED.
THE ORAL INTERVIEW WILL INCLUDE THEORETICAL, TECHNICAL AND APPLICATION QUESTIONS ON THE SUBJECTS OF THE COURSE. THE PRESENTATION, DISCUSSION AND DEVELOPMENT OF REAL EXAMPLES WILL BE USED FOR THE VERIFICATION OF SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE OF UNDERSTANDING, IN ADDITION TO THOSE OF COMMUNICATIVE TYPE IN THE SUBJECTS COVERED BY THE SECOND MODULE. ON THE BASIS OF THE ASSESSMENT OF THE TEST, A SCORE IS AWARDED IN THIRTIES (0-30 POINTS).
THE MINIMUM ASSESSMENT LEVEL (18) IS AWARDED WHEN THE STUDENT HAS SUFFICIENT KNOWLEDGE OF THE CONTENTS OF THE MODULE. THE MAXIMUM LEVEL (30) IS AWARDED WHEN THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATES EXCELLENT AND IN-DEPTH KNOWLEDGE OF THE CONTENTS OF THE MODULE. PRAISE IS GIVEN WHEN THE CANDIDATE SHOWS EXCELLENT MASTERY OF METHODOLOGIES AND TOOLS AND SHOWS REMARKABLE MASTERY OF LANGUAGE AND AUTONOMOUS PROCESSING SKILLS EVEN IN CONTEXTS OTHER THAN THOSE PROPOSED BY THE PROFESSOR.
