Objectives
THE COURSE WILL CONSOLIDATE ENGLISH LANGUAGE COMPETENCE BY PROVIDING PRACTICE IN THE FOUR SKILLS AND BY GIVING STUDENTS FURTHER TOOLS FOR TEXTUAL ANALYSIS AND TRANSLATION. STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO DISTINGUISH TEXT FEATURES ACCORDING TO THE PROFESSIONAL CONTEXT AND WILL BE AWARE OF INTERCULTURAL DIFFERENCES. FURTHERMORE, STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO TRANSLATE DIFFERENT TEXTS FROM ENGLISH INTO ITALIAN, INCLUDING LITERARY AND NON-LITERARY TEXTS.
BY THE END OF THE COURSE STUDENTS WILL HAVE REACHED A LEVEL OF LINGUISTIC COMPETENCE CORRESPONDING TO LEVEL C2 OF THE COMMON EUROPEAN FRAMEWORK.
Prerequisites
A FULL C1 LEVEL OF THE COMMON EUROPEAN FRAMEWORK OF REFERENCE IS REQUIRED TO TAKE THE COURSE.
DURING THE THREE-YEAR DEGREE COURSE STUDENTS MUST HAVE PASSED THE FOLLOWING EXAMS: ENGLISH LANGUAGE I, II, III AND ENGLISH LITERATURE I, II, III.
Contents
STUDENTS WILL DEAL WITH SEVERAL GENRES OF TEXTS IN TRANSLATION AND WILL BE PROVIDED WITH THE MOST OUTSTANDING THEORIES IN TRANSLATION STUDIES. TOGETHER WITH THEORETICAL ISSUES, STUDENTS WILL TRAIN THEIR TRANSLATION ABILITIES DURING IN-CLASS EXERCISES WITH TEXTS BELONGING TO DIFFERENT GENRES, LITERARY, AUDIOVISUAL, MUSICAL AND TECHNICAL.
THE 45-HOUR MODULE BY THE OFFICIAL TEACHER AND THE LANGUAGE PART DEALING WITH GRAMMAR, LEXIS, READING, WRITING, LISTENING WILL BE ANNUAL (FROM SEPTEMBER TO MAY).
SOME IN ITINERE TASKS / TESTS WILL BE AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE COURSE. SUCH TASKS/TESTS ARE INTENDED FOR ATTENDING STUDENTS ONLY.

Teaching Methods
THEORETICAL LECTURES, IN-CLASS EXERCISES OF TEXT ANALYSIS AND TRANSLATION, TASKS TO BE CARRIED OUT AT HOME AND DISCUSSED DURING CLASSES, PRACTICAL LANGUAGE ACTIVITIES IN THE CLASSROOM AND /OR LANGUAGE LABS WITH NATIVE-SPEAKER LANGUAGE EXPERTS; SELF-STUDY.
Verification of learning
THE EXAM WITH THE OFFICIAL TEACHER IS DIVIDED INTO TWO PARTS:
1.A WRITTEN WORK OF ANALYSIS AND TRANSLATION OF A TEXT CHOSEN BY STUDENTS, TO BE HANDED IN AT LEAST TWO WEEKS BEFORE THE ORAL EXAM AND A TRANSLATION TO BE DONE IN CLASS AT THE END OF THE COURSE.
2.AN ORAL INTERVIEW ON THE WORK CARRIED OUT AT HOME AND ON SOME OF THE MOST RELEVANT THEORIES OF TRANSLATION DEALT WITH DURING THE COURSE.
IN CASE OF FAILURE IN THE WRITTEN EXAM, STUDENTS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO TAKE THE ORAL EXAM AND WILL REPEAT THE WRITTEN PART.

THE GENERAL WRITTEN EXAM (GRAMMAR, READING COMPREHENSION, WRITING) WILL LAST 2 HOURS AND 15 MINUTES AND WILL BE FOLLOWED BY A TRANSLATION EXAM FOR THE STUDENTS WHO FAILED IT ON PREVIOUS OCCASIONS. THE TRANSLATION TEST WILL LAST 1 HOUR.

THE GENERAL ORAL EXAM IS DIVIDED INTO 3 PARTS:
1. A LISTENING TEST; FOR STUDENTS REGULARLY ATTENDING THE LANGUAGE COURSE, THERE WILL BE A LISTENING TEST EACH TERM.
2. A SPEAKING PART WITH MOTHER TONGUE EXPERTS;
3. A FINAL INTERVIEW WITH THE OFFICIAL TEACHER.

SOME IN ITINERE TASKS / TESTS WILL BE AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE COURSE. SUCH TESTS/TASKS ARE INTENDED FOR ATTENDING STUDENTS ONLY.
NON ATTENDING STUDENTS ARE INVITED TO CONTACT THE PROFESSOR IN ORDER TO GET INFORMATION ON THE PROGRAMME.
