Objectives
The aim of the course is to give students knowledge of the issues about the role of the writer as an “intellectual” in French culture during XI and XX century. The course aims at developing students’ awareness of the interconnections between literary, sociological and historical research.
Prerequisites
STUDENTS MUST HAVE PASSED THE FOLLOWING EXAMS: FRENCH LITERATURE 1-2-3 AND FRENCH
LANGUAGE 1-2-3.
Contents
The civic rule of writer between XIX and XX century: to the Dreyfus affair at Brasillach processs
The aim of the course is to deal with some critical moments of literary and cultural history of France, when the writer received a new political responsibility. The course explores the “engagement” of Zola, A. France, O. Mirbeau, Ch. Péguy, M. Barrès, Ch. Maurras in the Dreyfus affair. The Brasillach case shows the problems posed by collaborationism in French literature.
Teaching Methods
TEACHER-LED CLASSES (42 HOURS FOR 6 CFU; 54 HOURS FOR 9 CFU). ANALYSIS OF EXTRACTS FROM THE TEXTS INCLUDED IN THE READING LIST.
