Objectives
THE COURSE WILL HELP THE STUDENT ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGE OF THE EVOLUTION OF THE FRENCH
NOVEL AS WELL AS THE ABILITY TO PLACE THE NOVELS WITHIN THE IDEOLOGICAL AND CULTURAL
CONTEXT OF THEIR TIMES. THE STUDENT WILL ALSO BE ABLE TO RECOGNISE STYLISTIC AND
RHETORICAL DEVICES USED IN THE NARRATIVE, IDENTIFY THE STATUS OF THE AUTHOR, THE POINT OF
VIEW ADOPTED, THE NATURE OF THE CHARACTERS AND NARRATIVE STRUCTURES.
Prerequisites
BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF FUNDAMENTAL HISTORICAL, POLITICAL AND SOCIAL EVENTS OF THE EUROPEAN LITERARY CULTURE AND CIVILIZATION. APPROPRIATE LEVEL OF FRENCH LANGUAGE KNOWLEDGE.

THE COURSE AIMS TO DESCRIBE SYNTHETICALLY THE EVOLUTION OF THE NOVEL GENRE FROM 16TH TO 20TH CENTURIES THROUGH THE ANTHOLOGICAL READING OF TEXTS, THEIR CONTEXTUALIZATION AND THEIR CRITICAL ANALYSIS.
SOME PARTICULARLY MEANINGFUL NOVELS, LISTED BELOW, WILL BE FOCUSED. IN GENERAL TERMS, THE COURSE WILL PROPOSE THE FOLLOWING THEMES:
