Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO OFFER: A GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF THE EVOLUTION OF THE FRENCH NOVEL GENRE FROM 17TH TO 20TH CENTURIES THROUGH THE ANALYSIS OF PARTICULARLY MEANINGFUL WORKS; TO BE ABLE TO COLLOCATE THESE WORKS IN IDEOLOGICAL AND CULTURAL CONTEXTS OF THEIR TIME; TO BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY STYLISTIC AND RHETORICAL ELEMENTS USED IN THE WORKS; TO BE ABLE TO APPROACH CRITICALLY THE AESTHETICAL NOTIONS USED TO DEFINE SOME ARTISTIC AND LITERARY CURRENTS.

THE COURSE AIMS TO DESCRIBE SYNTHETICALLY THE EVOLUTION OF THE NOVEL GENRE FROM 16TH TO 20TH CENTURIES THROUGH THE ANTHOLOGICAL READING OF TEXTS, THEIR CONTEXTUALIZATION AND THEIR CRITICAL ANALYSIS.
SOME PARTICULARLY MEANINGFUL NOVELS, LISTED BELOW, WILL BE FOCUSED. IN GENERAL TERMS, THE COURSE WILL PROPOSE THE FOLLOWING THEMES:
1.INTRODUCTION TO THE NOTION OF NOVEL GENRE AND OF BASIC METHODOLOGICAL TOOLS,
2.AESTHETICAL NOTION OF BAROQUE, THE PHENOMENON OF PRÉCIOSITÉ (MLLE DE SCUDÉRY),, REALISM IN THE BAROQUE NOVEL (SCARRON, FURETIÈRE)
3.LOUIS XIV’S ABSOLUTISM AND THE AESTHETICAL NOTION OF CLASSICISM; JANSENISM; MADAME DE LAFAYETTE
4.LETTER NOVEL IN THE 18TH CENTURY; DIDEROT MODERNITY
5.THE FORERUNNERS OF ROMANTIC AGE; STENDHAL, ROUSSEAU, CHATEAUBRIAND.
6.19TH CENTURY, FROM REALISM TO NATURALISM: BALZAC, FLAUBERT, ZOLA
7.THE CRISIS OF NOVEL GENRE ACROSS XXTH CENTURY: PROUST.
Teaching Methods
TEACHER-LED CLASSES (54 HOURS). ACTIVE LECTURE, INTERACTIVE LESSONS, COLLABORATIVE AND COOPERATIVE TASKS.
Verification of learning
FINAL ORAL TEST. FOR ALL THE STUDENTS THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA ARE FUNDAMENTAL: WELL-SPOKEN IN THE EXPOSITION OF SPECIFIC CONCEPTS, ABILITY OF ORGANIZING A COMPLEX SPEECH ABOUT PROBLEMS, AUTHORS AND WORKS COCNERNING THE COURSE, THE KNOWLEDGE IN FRENCH LANGUAGE OF THE TEXTS STUDIED DURING THE COURSE, ABILITY OF SPEAKING ABOUT THE MAIN THEMES OF FRENCH NOVEL EVOLUTION DURING THE CENTURIES, ABILITY OF ANALYZING THE LITERARY TEXTS, THE KNOWLEDGE OF CRITICAL WORKS/ESSAIS LISTED IN THE PROGRAM.
