Objectives
THIS COURSE INVOLVES A GENERAL INTRODUCTION TO THE EVOLUTION OF FRENCH NOVEL. THROUGH RESPONDING TO TEXTS, STUDENTS CONSIDER HOW THE NOVEL’S LANGUAGE, STRUCTURE AND CONVENTIONS VARY DEPENDING ON THE IDEOLOGICAL AND CULTURAL CONTEXT. WHILE GAINING AN UNDERSTANDING OF THEIR HISTORICAL FRAMEWORK, STUDENTS WILL ALSO BE ABLE TO RECOGNISE STYLISTIC AND RHETORICAL DEVICES USED IN THE NOVELS, IDENTIFY THE STATUS OF THE AUTHOR, THE POINT OF VIEW ADOPTED, THE NATURE OF THE CHARACTERS AND NARRATIVE STRUCTURES.
Prerequisites
A BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF FRENCH IS RECOMMENDED TO READ THE TEXTS IN THEIR ORIGINAL LANGUAGE.

THE COURSE AIMS TO DESCRIBE SYNTHETICALLY THE EVOLUTION OF THE NOVEL GENRE FROM 17TH TO 20TH CENTURIES THROUGH THE ANTHOLOGICAL READING OF TEXTS, THEIR CONTEXTUALIZATION AND THEIR CRITICAL ANALYSIS.
SOME PARTICULARLY MEANINGFUL NOVELS, LISTED BELOW, WILL BE FOCUSED. IN GENERAL TERMS, THE COURSE WILL PROPOSE THE FOLLOWING THEMES:
1.INTRODUCTION TO THE NOTION OF NOVEL GENRE AND OF BASIC METHODOLOGICAL TOOLS,
2.FRANCOIS I’S REIGN, RABELAIS’ REALISM AND POPULAR CULTURE,
3.AESTHETICAL NOTION OF BAROQUE, THE PHENOMENON OF PRÉCIOSITÉ (MLLE DE SCUDÉRY),, REALISM IN THE BAROQUE NOVEL (SCARRON, FURETIÈRE)
4.LOUIS XIV’S ABSOLUTISM AND THE AESTHETICAL NOTION OF CLASSICISM; JANSENISM; MADAME DE LAFAYETTE
5.LETTER NOVEL IN THE 18TH CENTURY; MONTESQUIEU MODERNITY
7.19TH CENTURY, FROM REALISM TO NATURALISM: BALZAC, FLAUBERT, ZOLA
8.THE CRISIS OF NOVEL GENRE ACROSS XXTH CENTURY: PROUST
Teaching Methods
TEACHER-LED CLASSES (54 HOURS). ACTIVE LECTURE, INTERACTIVE LESSONS, COLLABORATIVE AND COOPERATIVE TASKS.
Verification of learning
FINAL ORAL TESTING. ALL THE STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED FLUENCY IN THE EXPOSITION OF SPECIFIC CONCEPTS, ABILITY OF ORGANIZING A COMPLEX SPEECH ABOUT PROBLEMS, AUTHORS AND WORKS DISCUSSED IN THE COURSE. STUDENTS’ ABILITY OF SPEAKING ABOUT THE MAIN THEMES OF FRENCH NOVEL EVOLUTION AND ANALYSING LITERARY TEXTS WILL ALSO BE TESTED. THE KNOWLEDGE OF CRITICAL WORKS/ESSAYS LISTED IN THE PROGRAMME IS ALSO NEEDED. LITERARY WORKS MUST BE READ IN FRENCH.
