Objectives
THE COURSE ON FUNDAMENTALS OF PHYSICS, BIOCHEMISTRY, AND APPLIED BIOLOGY TAKES PLACE IN THE FIRST SEMESTER. IT IS DIVIDED INTO THREE TEACHING MODULES: APPLIED BIOLOGY, GENERAL BIOCHEMISTRY, AND FUNDAMENTALS OF PHYSICS.

THE AIM OF THIS COURSE IS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH AN IN-DEPTH UNDERSTANDING OF THE FUNDAMENTAL CONCEPTS IN PHYSICS, BIOCHEMISTRY, AND APPLIED BIOLOGY. THE COURSE EMPHASIZES THE IMPORTANCE OF THESE SCIENTIFIC AREAS IN UNDERSTANDING VITAL PROCESSES. STUDENTS WILL ACQUIRE THE NECESSARY SKILLS TO INTERPRET BIOLOGICAL PHENOMENA FROM BOTH A PHYSICAL AND BIOCHEMICAL PERSPECTIVE, UNDERSTANDING HOW THESE PRINCIPLES APPLY TO FETAL AND MATERNAL DEVELOPMENT AND WELL-BEING.

AT THE END OF THE COURSE AND FOR SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THE EXAM, STUDENTS SHOULD DEMONSTRATE THE FOLLOWING OBJECTIVES:

1. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE FUNCTIONING OF MAJOR BIOLOGICAL MOLECULES, ENABLING THEM TO ANALYZE CORRELATIONS BETWEEN BIOMOLECULE STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION UNDER PHYSIOLOGICAL AND PATHOLOGICAL CONDITIONS.
2. APPLICATION OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING, INCLUDING THE ABILITY TO ANALYZE, DISCUSS, AND CORRELATE SIMPLE DATA OR HYPOTHESES.
3. JUDGMENT AUTONOMY THROUGH INFORMATION GATHERING AND DATA ANALYSIS IN LIFE SCIENCES, DISCUSSING THEIR MAIN CONNECTIONS.
4. COMMUNICATION SKILLS, INCLUDING THE ABILITY TO PRESENT ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE IN CORRECT ITALIAN LANGUAGE WITH APPROPRIATE TERMINOLOGY.
5. LEARNING ABILITY THROUGH CRITICAL EXPOSITION OF STUDIED TOPICS, INCLUDING LINKING ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE.
Prerequisites
THE STUDENT MUST HAVE ACQUIRED BASIC KNOWLEDGE IN THE FIELD OF BIOLOGY AND PHYSICS PROVIDED BY NORMAL HIGH SCHOOL CURRICULA.

GENERAL BIOCHEMISTRY MODULE (2 CFU- 24 HOURS)
- STRUCTURE AND PROPERTIES OF THE MAIN MACROMOLECULES OF BIOLOGICAL INTEREST.
- AMINO ACIDS AND PEPTIDES. PEPTIDE BOND. PROTEIN STRUCTURE. FIBROUS PROTEINS: COLLAGEN; GLOBULAR PROTEINS: MYOGLOBIN AND HEMOGLOBIN. ENZYMES AND PRINCIPLES OF ENZYMATIC KINETICS.
- BIOENERGETICS PRINCIPLES. ATP.
- CARBOHYDRATE METABOLISM. GLYCOLYSIS AND FERMENTATION. GLYCOGEN METABOLISM
- METABOLISM OF LIPIDS AND AMINO ACIDS.
- KREBS CYCLE. ELECTRON TRANSPORT CHAIN AND OXIDATIVE PHOSPHORYLATION.

PHYSICS (1 CFU- 12 HOURS)
PHYSICAL QUANTITIES AND MEASUREMENT UNITS; VECTOR ANALYSIS AND USE OF VECTORS FOR THE DESCRIPTION OF PHYSICAL QUANTITIES. STATIC AND DYNAMIC FLUIDS. KINEMATICS AND LAWS OF MOTION; THE PRINCIPLES OF DYNAMICS AND ANALYSIS OF THE FORCES ACTING ON A BODY BOTH IN SITUATIONS OF BALANCE AND IN MOTION.
WORK AND ENERGY; CONSERVATION LAWS: ENERGY AND MOTION QUANTITY.
CALORIMETRY AND METABOLISM;
THERMODYNAMICS LAWS;
WAVES PHENOMENA, BIOMEDICAL APPLICATIONS: ULTRASOUNDS AND ECHOGRAPHY.


APPLIED BIOLOGY MODULE (1CFU-12 HOURS)
CELLULAR CHEMISTRY, BIOMOLECULES, THE BASIS OF BIOLOGICAL ORGANIZATION: PROCARYOTIC AND EUKARTOTIC CELLS, CELLULAR ORGANELLES, TRANSPORT THROUGH MEMBRANES
REPRODUCTION AND CELL CYCLE, REPLICATION OF DNA, GENOME, CHROMOSOMES, MYTHOSIS AND MEIOSIS
INFORMATION FLOW: GENE EXPRESSION, MUTATIONS, MENDELIAN LAWS, NECROSIS AND APOPTOSIS

Teaching Methods
THE COURSE INCLUDES LECTURES FOR A TOTAL OF 48 HOURS. CLASSROOM ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY. IN ORDER TO TAKE THE FINAL EXAM, THE STUDENT MUST HAVE ATTENDED AT LEAST 75% OF THE TEACHING HOURS. THE MODE OF VERIFICATION OF PRESENCE IS MADE KNOWN BY THE TEACHER AT THE BEGINNING OF THE LESSONS.
Verification of learning
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE TEACHING OBJECTIVES IS CERTIFIED BY PASSING AN EXAM WITH A WRITTEN AND ORAL EXAM WITH AN EVALUATION IN THIRTIETHS. THE TEST, AS A WHOLE, MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO ASCERTAIN BOTH THE CAPACITY FOR KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING, AND THE ABILITY TO APPLY THE SKILLS ACQUIRED, BOTH THE ABILITY TO EXHIBIT, AND THE ABILITY TO LEARN AND DEVELOP SOLUTIONS INDEPENDENTLY. ALL THE PROFESSORS WILL PARTICIPATE IN THE OVERALL COLLECTIVE ASSESSMENT OF THE STUDENT'S PROFIT.
