THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE THE STUDENT WITH A GENERAL KNOWLEDGE OF THE MAIN BIOTECHNOLOGICAL APPROACHES USED IN THE INDUSTRIAL AND RESEARCH FIELDS. IN PARTICULAR, THE MOLECULAR AND BIOCHEMICAL ASPECTS UNDERLYING THESE APPROACHES WILL BE EXPLORED IN DEPTH. AT THE END OF THE COURSE THE STUDENT: - WILL KNOW THE MECHANISMS OF REGULATION OF ENZYMATIC ACTIVITY BOTH IN IN VIVO AND IN VITRO CONTEXTS - WILL KNOW THE PRINCIPLES THAT REGULATE THE METABOLISM OF CELLULAR SYSTEMS USEFUL FOR BIOTECHNOLOGICAL USE - WILL UNDERSTAND THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN GENETIC AND METABOLIC ENGINEERING TECHNIQUES AND THE OBTAINING OF BACTERIAL SPECIES USEFUL FOR INDUSTRIAL AND RESEARCH APPLICATIONS - WILL UNDERSTAND THE POTENTIAL OF BIOTECHNOLOGY IN VARIOUS CHEMICAL FIELDS FURTHERMORE, THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: - DISCUSS THE RESULTS OF INNOVATIVE STUDIES BASED ON THE USE OF BIOTECHNOLOGICAL APPROACHES IN THE CHEMICAL FIELD - IDENTIFY THE CRITICAL ISSUES AND STRENGTHS OF LABORATORY PROTOCOLS AIMED AT DEVELOPING SYNTHETIC OR DEGRADATION PROCESSES BASED ON THE USE OF MICROORGANISMS OR ENZYMES PRODUCED BY THEM - SUGGEST NEW AREAS OF APPLICATION OF TECHNIQUES BASED ON THE BIOTECHNOLOGICAL USE OF LIVING ORGANISMS IN THE CHEMICAL/ENVIRONMENTAL FIELD - ACQUIRE INFORMATION RELATING TO THE USE OF BIOTECHNOLOGY IN THE CLINICAL FIELD BY CONSULTING SPECIALIZED LITERATURE - IDENTIFY THE CRITICAL POINTS OF APPROACHES USED OR PROPOSED FOR USE IN RESEARCH OR INDUSTRIAL SETTINGS - EVALUATE THE APPLICABILITY OF THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED IN THE "REAL WORLD". - DISCUSS THE TOPICS COVERED IN PUBLIC, ALSO THROUGH THE CONSCIOUS USE OF RECENT DATA FROM SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE - EXPLAIN TO COLLEAGUES, ALSO USING APPROPRIATE TECHNOLOGICAL TOOLS, INNOVATIVE APPLICATIONS OF BIOTECHNOLOGY EVEN IN AREAS DIFFERENT FROM THOSE COVERED IN CLASS - IMPLEMENT THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF THE SUBJECT BY CONSULTING THE MOST RECENT SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE; - COMBINE INFORMATION FROM DIFFERENT SOURCES TO DELVE DEEPER INTO THE TOPICS COVERED, ALSO TAKING INTO ACCOUNT ASPECTS NOT DIRECTLY COVERED IN CLASS (ECONOMIC, ETHICAL IMPLICATIONS...); - DISCUSS WITH COLLEAGUES AND TEACHERS ABOUT THE APPLICABILITY OF BIOTECHNOLOGICAL APPROACHES ALSO IN SECTORS COVERED IN DIFFERENT COURSES |

THE TEACHING WILL THEREFORE BE FOCUSED ON THE DESCRIPTION OF MICROBIAL BIOCHEMISTRY AND HOW IT CAN BE EXPLOITED IN PRODUCTION PROCESSES BASED ON THE USE OF LIVE MICROORGANISMS OR PURIFIED ENZYMES. BY WAY OF EXAMPLE, SOME WELL-CHARACTERIZED AND WIDELY USED PROCESSES WILL BE STUDIED, SUCH AS THE PRODUCTION OF ETHANOL (WINE, BEER) AND LACTIC ACID IN THE DAIRY INDUSTRY; IN THIS WAY IT WILL BE POSSIBLE TO IDENTIFY THE CRITICAL PARAMETERS OF THE PROCESS, IN TERMS OF REACTION CONDITIONS, MICROBIAL VIABILITY AND ENZYMATIC EFFICIENCY. MAIN SKILLS THAT THE STUDENT WILL ACQUIRE: KNOWLEDGE OF THE MOLECULAR MECHANISMS UNDERLYING THE ACTIVITY OF THE MAIN ENZYMES OF INDUSTRIAL INTEREST ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND AND SOLVE PROBLEMS CONCERNING ENZYMATIC KINETICS. DETERMINATION OF CONSTANTS KINETICS OF ENZYMATIC AND MICROBIAL REACTIONS. ABILITY TO DETERMINE THE FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE MICROBIAL AND ENZYMATIC ACTIVITY, EVALUATING THE LIMITING FACTORS AND NEEDS METABOLITES OF MICROORGANISMS USED IN PRODUCTION PROCESSES. ACQUISITION OF THE TYPICAL TERMINOLOGY OF INDUSTRIAL MICROBIOLOGY. INTEGRATION OF THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED DURING THE COURSE WITH THOSE OF OTHER FIELDS AND THROUGH PRIMARY LITERATURE. |

THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE TEACHING OBJECTIVES IS VERIFIED THROUGH AN EXAM GRADED OUT OF THIRTY. THE EXAM TAKES PLACE AFTER THE END OF THE COURSE THROUGH AN INTERVIEW AIMED AT ASCERTAINING AND EVALUATING THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING ACHIEVED ON THE THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL CONTENTS OF THE PROGRAM. THE EVALUATION TAKES INTO ACCOUNT THE LANGUAGE SKILLS, THE AUTONOMY OF ORGANIZING THE PRESENTATION, THE ABILITY TO ELABORATE ANSWERS TO THE QUESTIONS ALSO ASKED ON THE PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT DURING THE EXERCISES. THE FINAL GRADE TAKES INTO ACCOUNT THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED, THE LANGUAGE SKILLS, THE QUALITY OF THE PRESENTATION AND THE ABILITY TO FIND SOLUTIONS IN PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES. THE MINIMUM GRADE (18/30) IS REACHED WHEN THE EXAM DEMONSTRATES THE ACHIEVEMENT OF A SUFFICIENT LEVEL IN KNOWLEDGE, LANGUAGE ABILITY AND QUALITY OF PRESENTATION. THE MAXIMUM MARK (30/30) IS ACHIEVED WHEN THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATES, WITH THE EXAM, FULL AND COMPLETE KNOWLEDGE AND OWNERSHIP OF LANGUAGE ON THE TOPICS ADDRESSED, WITH MAXIMUM QUALITY OF PRESENTATION AND ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE IN PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES. HONORS ARE AWARDED WHEN THE EXAM DEMONSTRATES, IN ADDITION TO THE HIGHEST POSSIBLE RESULT, A PARTICULAR QUALITY OF PRESENTATION WITH CRITICAL ANALYSIS SKILLS. |
