Objectives
TO FORM A SOLID KNOWLEDGE OF THE MAIN TYPOLOGIES OF THE LATE ANTIQUE AND MEDIEVAL SETTLEMENTS AND OF THEIR DYNAMICS RELATING TO PLACES AND FUNCTIONS, THROUGH THE ANALYSIS OF THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL EVIDENCE AND THE RELATED WRITTEN SOURCES.
TO ANALYZE AND CONTEXTUALIZE THE LATE ANTIQUE AND MEDIEVAL ARTIFACTS, MANUFACTURED AND USED IN EACH SETTLEMENT.
Prerequisites
GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF ROMAN AND MEDIEVAL HISTORY; GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF THE MAIN ARCHEOLOGICAL TOPICS OF BOTH PERIODS.
Contents
IN THE FIRST PART OF THE COURSE THE FOLLOWING TOPICS WILL BE ADDRESSED:
- - THE DEFINITION OF LATE ANTIQUITY;
- THE PROBLEMS OF PERIODIZATION AND DEFINITION OF TERRITORIAL AREAS, WITH REFERENCE TO THE “ORBIS ROMANUS” IN THE PHASE OF ITS MAXIMUM EXPANSION;
- THE BOUNDARIES ASSUMED WITH THE SEPARATION OF THE 'PARS OCCIDENTIS' FROM THE 'PARS ORIENTIS' IN LATE ANTIQUITY AND IN THE EARLY MIDDLE AGES;
- THE TERRITORIAL FRAGMENTATION OF THE EARLY MIDDLE AGES;
- THE MAIN TYPES OF LATE ANCIENT, EARLY MEDIEVAL AND MEDIEVAL SETTLEMENTS WILL BE ILLUSTRATED (URBAN AND RURAL SETTLEMENTS, HIGH COUNTRY AREAS, MARITIME AND INSULAR SETTLEMENTS, SANCTUARIES, MONASTERIES) WITH EXAMPLES TAKEN FROM THE MOST SIGNIFICANT CASE STUDIES AND THE MOST RECENT INVESTIGATIONS IN ITALY AND EUROPE.
THE CHARACTERISTICS OF EACH FORM OF SETTLEMENT WILL BE ANALYZED MAINLY THROUGH ARCHAEOLOGICAL DATA AND INDICATORS, BUT ALSO THROUGH THE INTEGRATED INTERPRETATION OF DOCUMENTARY SOURCES OF DIFFERENT NATURES.
THE COMPARISON WITH THE REALITIES OF THE CORRESPONDING DISCIPLINES DEALING WITH THE CLASSICAL AGE AND LATE ANTIQUITY AIMS TO
- EMPHASIZE THE ELEMENTS OF CONTINUITY/DISCONTINUITY THAT CHARACTERIZE EARLY MEDIEVAL/MEDIEVAL SETTLEMENTS;
- ANALYZE THE PHENOMENA - SUCH AS THE CHRISTIANISATION AT FIRST, THEN THE SETTLEMENT OF ALLOGENE POPULATIONS - WHICH HAVE LEAD TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF SOME FORMS OF SETTLEMENT LESS USED PREVIOUSLY OR TO THE BIRTH OF NEW REALITIES.

THE SECOND PART OF THE COURSE WILL ADDRESS THE STATE OF KNOWLEDGE ABOUT LATE ANTIQUE, EARLY MEDIEVAL AND MEDIEVAL SETTLEMENTS IN SOUTHERN ITALY (SETTLEMENTS, CASTLES, MONASTIC SETTLEMENTS, PLACES OF POWER).
THE NORMAN CONQUEST OF SOUTHERN ITALY WILL BE ADDRESSED THROUGH THE STUDY OF INNOVATIONS IN CONSTRUCTION, MILITARY AND FOOD THAT CAME IN THE WAKE OF THE NEW CONQUERORS.
ABOUT THE SWAVEN AND ANGEVIN AGE THE TOPICS OF COINAGE AND MILITARY INNOVATIONS WILL BE EXAMINED.
DURING THE MODULE, RECENT RESEARCHES CONDUCTED IN THE AREA AND THE RESULTS PRODUCED WILL BE PRESENTED.
IN-DEPTH STUDIES ON CAMPANIA WILL COVER SALERNO, BENEVENTO, CAPUA, NOCERA, AMALFI-ATRANI, RAVELLO-SCALA, CAPACCIO-PAESTUM, AND ROTA-MERCATO SAN SEVERINO.
ABOUT THE MATERIAL CULTURE, THE STUDY OF LATE ANTIQUE AND MEDIEVAL CONTEXTUAL ARTIFACTS MADE AND USED IN EACH SETTLEMENT (CERAMICS , GLASS, HOUSEHOLD FURNISHINGS IN PRECIOUS METALS, CIVIL AND RELIGIOUS ARCHITECTURAL COMPONENTS, LITURGICAL FURNISHINGS IN VARIOUS MATERIALS, VARIOUS COMPONENTS AND FURNISHINGS OF INHABITED STRUCTURES) WILL BE LOOKED IN DEPTH.
Teaching Methods
- FRONTAL LECTURES, WITH POWER POINT PROJECTIONS.

- POSSIBLE SEMINARS AND CONFERENCES HELD BY FACULTY’S COLLEAGUES OR EXTERNAL SPEAKERS; FOR THE SECOND MODULE THE TOPICS OF MONEY AND MILITARY INNOVATIONS OF THE SWAVEN AND ANGEVIN AGES WILL BE TREATED IN SEMINAR FORM.

- GUIDED VISITS TO SOME ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES AND MUSEUMS OR THEMATIC EXHIBITIONS.
Verification of learning
THE EXAM CONSISTS OF AN ORAL INTERVIEW, WHICH INCLUDES AT LEAST TWO QUESTIONS FOR EACH OF THE TWO MODULES, DURING WHICH GENERAL AND SPECIFIC TOPICS WILL BE DISCUSSED, USING THE IMAGES OF THE POWER-POINTS PROJECTED DURING THE LESSONS OR CONTAINED IN TEXTBOOKS.

THE TEST AIMS TO VERIFY THE STUDENT'S ABILITY TO:
- ORIENT YOURSELF IN THE MATTER WITH ADEQUATE HISTORICAL-ARCHAEOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE;
- RECOGNIZE AND CONTEXTUALIZE THE TESTIMONIALS OF MATERIAL CULTURE.

IN THE FINAL ASSESSMENT, EXPRESSED IN THIRTIETHS, THE FOLLOWING ELEMENTS WILL BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT:
- KNOWLEDGE OF THE CONTENTS;
- THE ABILITY TO CORRELATE THE DIFFERENT TOPICS COVERED BY THE COURSE TO EACH OTHER AND POSSIBLY WITH OTHER DISCIPLINES;
- OF THE AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT ACHIEVED;
- THE QUALITY OF THE EXPOSURE, BOTH IN GENERAL TERMS AND OF THE USE OF APPROPRIATE SCIENTIFIC LANGUAGE.
