Objectives
TTHE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH BOTH PRECLINICAL AND CLINICAL NOTIONS RELATED TO IMMUNE-REGULATORY DRUGS AND THE RATIONAL BASIS ON THE CLINICAL USE OF THIS CLASS OF DRUGS.

AT THE END OF THE COURSE THE STUDENT WILL KNOW:
-MECHANISMS REGULATING THE IMMUNE RESPONSE;
- MECHANISM OF ACTION, PHARMACOLOGICAL EFFECTS, ADVERSE REACTIONS AND THERAPEUTIC USES OF THE MAIN NON-SPECIFIC, SPECIFIC-ACTION IMMUNE-STIMULATING AGENTS, IMMUNE-STIMULATING MONOCLONAL ANTIBODIES AND VACCINES;
-MECHANISM OF ACTION, PHARMACOKINETICS, SIDE EFFECTS, INTERACTIONS AND THERAPEUTIC USES OF IMMUNOSUPPRESSIVE DRUGS.
AT THE END OF THE COURSE THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
-ANALYSE AND ADDRESS ISSUES RELATED TO THE USE, INTERACTIONS AND ADVERSE EVENTS OF IMMUNOREGULATORY DRUGS FOR THE SUSTAINABILITY OF IMMUNO-INFLAMMATORY-BASED DISEASE THERAPIES.

FOR UNDERSTANDING OF THIS COURSE, IT IS IMPORTANT THE ACQUISITION OF THE FOLLOWING DISCIPLINES: PHARMACOLOGY AND PHARMACOTHERAPY, MOLECULAR BIOLOGY

THE TEACHING COURSE COVERS 48 HOURS OF LESSONS (6 CFU) ON THE FOLLOWING TOPICS:
-MECHANISMS GOVERNING NATURAL AND SPECIFIC IMMUNE RESPONSES (6 HOURS).
-CLASSIFICATION OF IMMUNOREGULATORY DRUGS (1 HOUR)
IMMUNOSUPPRESSIVE DRUGS: GENERAL ASPECTS AND PHARMACOKINETIC CHARACTERISTICS OF TRADITIONAL AND BIOTECHNOLOGICAL DRUGS (4 HOURS).
- IMMUNOSUPPRESSIVE ANTI-PROLIFERATIVE DRUGS (2 HOURS)
- IMMUNOPHYLLINE LIGANDS (2 HOURS)
- CORTICOSTEROIDS (6 HOURS)
- BIOTECHNOLOGICAL DRUGS: MABS AND FUSION PROTEINS AGAINST T OR B CELLS, ANTI-CYTOCHINS, ANTI-MIGRATION DRUGS (6 HOURS)
- TREATMENT OF:
- -RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS (2 HOURS)
- - PSORIASIS (2 HOURS)
- -MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS (2 HOURS)
- THERAPY OF CHRONIC INFLAMMATORY DISEASES (2 HOURS):
- - PULMONARY
- -INTESTINAL

IMMUNOSTIMULANT DRUGS
- SYNTHETIC DRUGS (1HR)
- RECOMBINANT CYTOKINES (2 HOUR)
- IMMUNOGLOBULINS AND COMPLEX, NON-SPECIFIC, SPECIFIC IMMUNOGLOBULIN PREPARATIONS AND IMMUNOSTIMULATING MONOCLONAL ANTIBODIES (2 HOURS)
ANTI-TUMOR IMMONOTETHERAPY (4 HOURS)
- VACCINES (4 HOURS)
Teaching Methods
The course includes lectures that take place in the classroom with the help of powerpoint projections.
ATTENDANCE IS COMPULSORY.
Verification of learning
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE TEACHING OBJECTIVES SHALL BE CERTIFIED BY PASSING AN EXAMINATION WITH ASSESSMENT IN THIRTIES. THE EXAMINATION SHALL INCLUDE AN ORAL TEST, OF A MAXIMUM DURATION OF 30 MINUTES, which consists of an interview with questions and a discussion on the theoretical content indicated in the teaching programme and is intended to ascertain the level of knowledge and comprehension attained by the student, AND TO VERIFY THE ABILITY OF EXPOSURE BY USING THE APPROPRIATE TERMINOLOGY AND THE ABILITY OF AUTONOMOUS ORGANISATION OF THE TOPICS.
The minimum mark for passing is 18/30 and will be assigned to the student who shows knowledge on the fundamentals of immunology and immunopathology, biological drugs and drugs able to modulate the immune and inflammatory responses. THE HONOURS CAN BE AWARDED TO STUDENTS WHO REACH A MAXIMUM MARK OF 30/30 AND DEMONSTRATE THEIR ABILITY TO APPLY INDEPENDENTLY KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS ACQUIRED IN CONTEXTS OTHER THAN THOSE PROPOSED IN CLASS.
