Objectives
The course aims to give the awareness of the inscriptions’ importance as
essential tool for the direct knowledge of the Greek civilization. It will also give provide the basic methodology to study Greek inscriptions.

IN THE FIRST PART, AFTER NOTES ON THE HISTORY OF THE EPIGRAPHY AND THE PRE-ALPHABETIC WRITINGS, THE LESSONS REGARD THE FOLLOWING TOPICS: ORIGIN AND EVOLUTION OF THE GREEK ALPHABET UP TO THE HELLENISTIC AGE; GREEK ALPHABETS OF THE ARCHAIC PERIOD; CLASSIFICATION OF THE INSCRIPTIONS; STUDY OF AN EPIGRAPHIC TEXT: METHODOLOGY AND TOOLS; PUBLIC INSCRIPTIONS (TREATED , LAWS, DECREES, STATEMENTS AND INVENTORIES); PRIVATE INSCRIPTIONS (VOTIVE DEDICATIONS, FUNERARY INSCRIPTIONS); HOLY INSCRIPTIONS (DEDICATIONS, SACRED LAWS); ORPHIC GOLD LABELS. THE SECOND PART IS A FOCUS ON ARCHAIC INSCRIPTIONS OF THE ACHAEAN COLONIES OF MAGNA GREACIA.
