Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH METHODOLOGICAL AND TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS FOR DESIGNING AND CONDUCTING BOTH QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE EMPIRICAL RESEARCH, ENABLING UNDERSTANDING OF CONTEMPORARY SOCIAL PHENOMENA.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
THE STUDENT WILL ACQUIRE CONCEPTUAL AND INSTRUMENTAL KNOWLEDGE SPECIFIC TO THE METHODOLOGICAL DISCIPLINE, ADAPTED TO THE VARIOUS DIRECTIONS THAT EMPIRICAL RESEARCH PATHS MAY TAKE. THEY WILL BE ABLE TO COMPREHEND THE CHARACTERISTICS, STRENGTHS, AND WEAKNESSES OF BOTH QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE APPROACHES, THE VARIETY OF RESEARCH DESIGNS, DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES, AS WELL AS THE PROCESSES OF INTERPRETING INFORMATION.

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: THE STUDENT WILL DEVELOP THE ABILITY TO DESIGN THE FRAMEWORK OF AN EMPIRICAL RESEARCH (BOTH QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE) BY EXPLORING ITS VARIOUS COMPONENTS. THEY WILL BE ABLE TO ARTICULATE THE CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK UNDERLYING A SPECIFIC RESEARCH QUESTION, CONSTRUCT AND UTILIZE DATA COLLECTION TOOLS, EMPLOY DATA ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES, AND CRITICALLY INTERPRET THE OBTAINED RESULTS.

JUDGMENT AUTONOMY:
THROUGH A COMPREHENSIVE AND CRITICAL UNDERSTANDING OF THE RESEARCH PROCESS, THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO EVALUATE THE METHODOLOGICAL CHOICES MADE IN CONDUCTING EMPIRICAL RESEARCH, BOTH QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
THE STUDENT WILL BE CAPABLE OF ENGAGING IN DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING THE METHODOLOGY OF SOCIAL RESEARCH, REFERENCING THE FUNDAMENTALS AND PRINCIPLES OF THE DISCIPLINE AND USING LANGUAGE AND CONCEPTS APPROPRIATE TO THE SCIENTIFIC CONTEXT. THEY WILL KNOW HOW TO REPRESENT, COMMENT ON, AND EFFECTIVELY COMMUNICATE THE RESULTS OF SOCIAL RESEARCH.

LEARNING ABILITY: THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS GAINED IN SOCIAL RESEARCH TO CONTEXTS DIFFERENT FROM THOSE PRESENTED DURING THE COURSE.

THE COURSE DELVES INTO THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH IN THE CONTEXT OF THE SOCIAL SCIENCES AND EXPLORES THE CONCEPTS, APPROACHES AND TOOLS OF THE METHODOLOGICAL DISCIPLINE NEEDED TO CARRY OUT EMPIRICAL INVESTIGATIONS.
IT ADDRESSES THE VARIOUS PHASES OF THE SOCIAL RESEARCH PROCESS, ENCOMPASSING BOTH QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE APPROACHES, STARTING FROM DEFINING THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND PROGRESSING TO THE SELECTION OF THE MOST APPROPRIATE METHOD AND TECHNIQUES. STUDENTS WILL BE INTRODUCED TO DATA COLLECTION TECHNIQUES SUCH AS QUESTIONNAIRES, NON-DIRECTIVE INTERVIEWS, AND PARTICIPANT OBSERVATION, AS WELL AS ANALYSIS STRATEGIES INCLUDING UNIVARIATE, BIVARIATE, AND HERMENEUTIC ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF RESULTS.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE IS STRUCTURED WITH LECTURES AND INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP EXERCISES. DURING LECTURES, THEORETICAL AND CONCEPTUAL KNOWLEDGE OF THE DISCIPLINE WILL BE PROVIDED. EXERCISES WILL INVOLVE THE DESIGNING AND IMPLEMETATION OF QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE RESEARCH PATHS NEEDED TO ADDRESS SOCIOLOGICAL QUESTIONS. THE LECTURE'S ORAL PRESENTATION OF CONTENT WILL BE SUPPORTED BY THE USE OF BOTH TRADITIONAL AND INNOVATIVE DIGITAL TOOLS AND RESOURCES (INTERACTIVE CONCEPT MAPS, INFOGRAPHICS, ETC.)
Verification of learning
THE LEARNING ASSESSMENT WILL BE CARRIED OUT BY MEANS OF AN ORAL EXAMINATION AIMED AT VERIFYING: THE LEVELS OF KNOWLEDGE OF THE CONCEPTS, METHODOLOGICAL APPROACHES AND OPERATIONAL PROCEDURES PROPOSED IN THE COURSE, THE ABILITY TO CRITICALLY APPLY THE TOOLS LEARNT, AUTONOMY OF JUDGEMENT, COMMUNICATION SKILLS
