THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH A DEEP UNDERSTANDING OF THE EPISTEMOLOGICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL ISSUES CHARACTERIZING DIGITAL SOCIAL RESEARCH, ALONG WITH THE SKILLS NECESSARY TO DESIGN AND CARRY OUT EMPIRICAL INVESTIGATIONS IN DIGITAL CONTEXTS. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: THE COURSE SEEKS TO FOSTER IN STUDENTS AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE CONCEPTUAL AND TECHNICAL ISSUES INVOLVED IN COMPLEX SOCIAL RESEARCH PROCESSES IN DIGITAL ENVIRONMENTS, PROMOTING A CONNECTION BETWEEN EPISTEMOLOGICAL PRINCIPLES, METHODOLOGICAL APPROACHES, AND OPERATIONAL PROCEDURES OF DIGITAL SOCIAL RESEARCH. STARTING FROM AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE CHARACTERISTICS OF DIGITAL PLATFORMS AND THE TYPES OF INFORMATION GENERATED IN SUCH CONTEXTS, STUDENTS WILL LEARN THE CONCEPTS, LANGUAGES, PATHWAYS, AND KEY TOOLS OF DIGITAL SOCIAL RESEARCH. ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO CONSCIOUSLY AND RIGOROUSLY DESIGN AND CARRY OUT EMPIRICAL RESEARCH PATHWAYS THROUGH THE DIGITAL METHODS APPROACH: THEY WILL BE ABLE TO USE VARIOUS TOOLS TO COLLECT AND ANALYSE DIGITAL INFORMATION. JUDGMENT AUTONOMY: STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO CRITICALLY EVALUATE THE METHODOLOGICAL CHOICES MADE TO CARRY OUT EMPIRICAL RESEARCH IN DIGITAL ENVIRONMENTS AND CHOICE APPROPRIATE DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES FOR THE RESEARCH PATHWAY UNDERTAKEN. COMMUNICATIVE SKILLS: STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO ENGAGE IN DISCUSSIONS ON TOPICS RELATED TO SOCIAL RESEARCH IN THE DIGITAL ENVIRONMENT, REFERENCING THE FOUNDATIONS AND PRINCIPLES OF THE DISCIPLINE AND USING LANGUAGE AND CONCEPTS APPROPRIATE TO THE SCIENTIFIC CONTEXT. LEARNING ABILITY: STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE GAINED TO DIFFERENT DIGITAL CONTEXTS FROM THOSE PRESENTED DURING THE COURSE. |

THE COURSE AIMS TO ILLUSTRATE THE MAIN EPISTEMOLOGICAL, METHODOLOGICAL, AND TECHNICAL ISSUES OF DIGITAL SOCIAL RESEARCH. SPECIFICALLY, IT WILL COVER THE RESEARCH PATHS CHARACTERIZING QUALITATIVE, QUANTITATIVE, AND MIXED APPROACHES USED IN SOCIAL RESEARCH WITHIN DIGITAL ENVIRONMENTS; THE CHARACTERISTICS OF DATA AND DIGITAL TRACES AND THEIR RELEVANCE IN SOCIAL RESEARCH; ISSUES OF DATA VALIDITY AND FIDELITY, THE ROLE OF PLATFORMS AND ALGORITHMS IN SHAPING DIGITAL ENVIRONMENTS; TOOLS (DIGITAL AND DIGITIZED) FOR THE COLLECTION OF DIGITAL DATA AND THE MAIN DATA ANALYSIS TOOLS; THE MAIN ETHICAL IMPLICATIONS OF DIGITAL SOCIAL RESEARCH. |

THE COURSE IS STRUCTURED INTO LECTURES AND INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP EXERCISES. DURING THE LECTURES, THEORETICAL AND CONCEPTUAL KNOWLEDGE OF THE DISCIPLINE WILL BE PROVIDED. THE FOLLOWING ACTIVITIES ARE PROPOSED DURING THE EXERCISES: DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF DIGITAL RESEARCH PATHS AIMED AT ANSWERING SOCIOLOGICAL QUESTIONS. THE ORAL PRESENTATION OF CONTENT BY THE TEACHER IS SUPPORTED BY THE USE OF INNOVATIVE DIGITAL RESOURCES (VIDEOS, INTERACTIVE CONCEPT MAPS, ETC.). |
