Objectives
As a student of Spanish Literature, you will not only be able to analyse a wide range of literary texts from the Golden Age, but you will also explore the complex relationships between literature, history and society.
Prerequisites
Previous knowledge of Spanish Language.
Contents
This course focuses on Spanish Literature from Filippo II to 1680. As such, it will explore the connections between literature, society, history, culture and politics during the Golden Age.
Topics: the evolution of the picaresque; Cervantes; the birth of the public theatre; the formation of modern forms of subjectivity in poetry; renaissance and baroque; the reinforcement of seigniorial beliefs and the emergence of absolutism. Texts by Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Calderón, Tirso de Molina, Quevedo, Góngora.
