Objectives
THE BIOCHEMICAL AND BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES COURSE TAKES PLACE IN THE FIRST SEMESTER OF THE FIRST YEAR. IT IS DIVIDED INTO 3 TEACHING MODULES: APPLIED BIOLOGY, BIOCHEMISTRY AND CLINICAL BIOCHEMISTRY AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY EACH WITH 2 CREDITS FOR A TOTAL OF 72 HOURS OF LESSONS. THE COURSE AIMS TO PROMOTE THE ACQUISITION OF THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE CONCERNING APPLIED BIOLOGY, BIOCHEMISTRY AND CLINICAL BIOCHEMISTRY. IN PARTICULAR, IN ADDITION TO THE BASIC ELEMENTS, THE ASPECTS RELATED TO DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING WILL BE ANALYZED.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
- KNOWLEDGE OF BIOLOGY
- KNOWLEDGE OF CLINICAL BIOCHEMISTRY
- KNOWLEDGE OF CLINICAL MOLECULAR BIOLOGY
ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
- ABILITY TO DESCRIBE THE MAIN ASPECTS OF BIOLOGY AND BIOCHEMISTRY
TRANSVERSAL SKILLS
- ABILITY TO UPDATE THROUGH BIBLIOGRAPHIC TOOLS.
- ABILITY TO CONNECT THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE TO DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING.
Prerequisites
THE STUDENT MUST HAVE ACQUIRED BASIC KNOWLEDGE IN THE FIELD OF CHEMISTRY AND BIOLOGY PROVIDED BY NORMAL HIGH SCHOOL CURRICULA
Contents
THE COURSE IS DIVIDED INTO 3 MODULES:BIOCHEMISTRY, APPLIED BIOLOGY, CLINICAL BIOCHEMISTRY AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY EACH WITH 2 CFU. THE COURSE PROVIDES 72 HOURS OF LESSONS IN WHICH THE TOPICS WILL BE ADDRESSED:
BIOCHEMISTRY MODULE (2 CFU- 24 HOURS)
-CHEMICAL REACTIONS FUNDAMENTALS IN BIOLOGY.
- STRUCTURE AND PROPERTIES OF THE MAIN MACROMOLECULES OF BIOLOGICAL INTEREST.
- AMINO ACIDS AND PEPTIDES. PEPTIDE BOND. PROTEIN STRUCTURE. FIBROUS PROTEINS: COLLAGEN; GLOBULAR PROTEINS: MYOGLOBIN AND HEMOGLOBIN. ENZYMES AND PRINCIPLES OF ENZYMATIC KINETICS.
- BIOENERGETICS PRINCIPLES. ATP. CARBOHYDRATE CATABOLISM. GLYCOLYSIS. KREBS CYCLE. ELECTRON TRANSPORT CHAIN AND OXIDATIVE PHOSPHORYLATION. CATABOLISM OF LIPIDS. PROTEIN CATABOLISM. UREA CYCLE. NUTRITION / FASTING CYCLE.
CLINICAL BIOCHEMISTRY AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY MODULE (2 CFU-24 HOURS)
- GENERAL ASPECTS OF THE CHEMICAL-CLINICAL LABORATORY. ADJUSTMENT OF ELECTROLYTIC AND ACID-BASE EQUILIBRIUM. RENAL FUNCTION. ALTERATIONS OF CARBOHYDRATE AND LIPID METABOLISM. CARDIAC DAMAGE MARKERS. TUMOR MARKERS.
- THE MAIN MOLECULAR TECHNOLOGIES USED IN LABORATORY DIAGNOSTICS: PCR AND REAL-TIME PCR, RFLP, HYBRIDIZATION TECHNIQUES, AUTOMATIC ANALYZERS, MUTATIONAL SCREENING METHODS.
APPLIED BIOLOGY MODULE (2 CFU-24 HOURS)
- STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION OF BIOLOGICAL MEMBRANES. PROPERTIES OF MEMBRANES IN RELATION TO THE LIPID AND PROTEIN COMPOSITION. MODE OF TRANSPORT OF SMALL MOLECULES THROUGH THE MEMBRANES.
- MITOCHONDRIA. GENERAL ORGANIZATION OF CELL METABOLISM. MITOCHONDRIA AND CELLULAR RESPIRATION AND ATP BIOSYNTHESIS
- STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION OF THE GENOME. THE NUCLEUS OF THE EUKARYOTIC CELL. CHROMOSOME ORGANIZATION OF EUKARYOTIC DNA. CONCEPT OF GENE, GENERAL MECHANISMS AND BIOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF TRANSCRIPTION AND TRANSLATION. GENETIC CODE - MUTATIONS
- ORGANIZATION AND FUNCTIONS OF CELLULAR COMPARTMENTS. ORGANIZATION AND FUNCTIONS OF THE ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM. ORGANIZATION AND FUNCTIONS OF THE GOLGI APPARATUS. CONSTITUTIVE SECRETION AND REGULATED SECRETION. EXOCYTOSIS. MECHANISMS OF ENDOCYTOSIS AND THEIR FUNCTIONAL SIGNIFICANCE.
- CELL DIVISION AND REPRODUCTION. ORGANIZATION OF THE CELL CYCLE. BIOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE AND STAGES OF MITOSIS. STRUCTURAL MODIFICATIONS OF THE CELL DURING MITOSIS. STAGES OF MEIOSIS AND THEIR BIOLOGICAL MEANING. SEXUAL REPRODUCTION. FERTILIZATION. GENETIC CODE. MUTATIONS.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE INCLUDES 72 HOURS OF LECTURES AND TESTS IN PROGRESS. THE FREQUENCY OF CLASSROOM LESSONS AND LABORATORY EXERCISES IS MANDATORY. IN ORDER TO TAKE THE FINAL EXAM, THE STUDENT MUST HAVE ATTENDED AT LEAST 75% OF THE TEACHING HOURS. THE MODALITY BY WHICH FREQUENCY WILL BE MONITORED, WILL BE COMMUNICATED WHEN LESSONS WILL START
Verification of learning
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE TEACHING OBJECTIVES IS CERTIFIED BY AN EXAM THAT WILL CONSIST IN A WRITTEN AND ORAL TEST WITH A FINAL EVALUATION OUT OF THIRTY. THE TEST AS A WHOLE, MAKES POSSIBLE TO ASCERTAIN BOTH THE KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING ABILITIES, THE ABILITY TO APPLY THE ACQUIRED SKILLS, A CORRECT ORAL EXPOSURE AND THE ABILITY TO LEARN AND DEVELOP SOLUTIONS INDIPENDENTLY. PROFESSORS OF THE COORDINATED MODULES WILL PARTICIPATE IN THE FINAL EVALUATION OF THE STUDENT'S PROFIT.
