Objectives
THE COURSE CONSISTS OF TWO MODULES: THE FIRST 30-HOUR-MODULE IS COMMON TO ALL CURRICULA WHEREAS THE SECOND 15-HOUR MODULE IS SPECIFIC TO THE STUDENTS’ SINGLE CURRICULUM. THE MAIN AIM IS TO:
- STRENGTHEN ENGLISH LANGUAGE COMPETENCE AND FACE TRANSLATION PROBLEMS THROUGH THE DEEPENING OF THE RESEARCH ABILITY TO SOLVE LINGUISTIC PROBLEMS;
- CONCENTRATE ON SPECIALIZED TRANSLATION;
- CRITICALLY AND DEEPLY REFLECT ON CULTURAL ASPECTS AND LEXICAL APPROPRIATENESS IN TRANSLATION;
- MAKE STUDENTS AUTONOMOUS IN CARRYING OUT BIBLIOGRAPHIC RESEARCH.
THE LITERATURE AND LITERARY TRANSLATION CURRICULUM AIMS TO DEEPEN THE CRITICAL REFLECTION ON THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL ISSUES CONCERNING DIFFERENT TYPES OF LITERARY TRANSLATION AND CRITICAL TEXTS.
THE LINGUISTICS AND DIDACTICS OF LANGUAGES CURRICULUM AIMS TO IMPROVE METHODOLOGICAL AND LINGUISTIC SKILLS WHILE FACILITATING THE TEACHING/LEARNING OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE ALSO IN RELATION TO ISSUES OF DEFINITION IN INTERLINGUAL AND INTRALINGUAL TRANSLATION PROCESSES.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
STUDENTS WILL:
-COMPLETE A LEVEL OF COMPETENCE CORRESPONDING TO A FULL C2 OF THE COMMON EUROPEAN LANGUAGE FRAMEWORK;
-LEARN HOW TO METALINGUISTICALLY REFLECT ON THE LINGUISTIC CHARACTERISTICS AND TRANSLATION STRATEGIES IN ENGLISH-ITALIAN TRANSLATIONS;
-LEARN HOW TO ANALYSE ENGLISH THROUGH THE STUDY OF LINGUISTICS TO FACE THE MAIN PROBLEMATIC ASPECTS OF THE TRANSLATION OF DIFFERENT TEXT TYPES.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
-IDENTIFY THE MAIN SOCIOCULTURAL ASPECTS IN ORDER TO BE GOOD CULTURAL MEDIATORS;
-MASTER THE LANGUAGE IN EVERYDAY, PROFESSIONAL AND ACADEMIC CONTEXTS;
-WORK AS TRANSLATOR AND CULTURAL MEDIATOR IN DIFFERENT PROFESSIONAL DOMAINS.
- ANALYSE AND TRANSLATE LITERARY AS WELL AS TECHNICAL AND SPECIALISED TEXTS, SPECIFICALLY RELATED TO THE SELECTED CONTEXTS OF USE;

MAKING JUDGEMENTS
STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- APPROACH AND RE-ELABORATE DATA RELATED TO THE SINGLE TRANSLATIONS AS WELL AS TO THE ISSUES OF TRANSLATION AS A WHOLE;
- CRITICALLY EVALUATE PROBLEMATIC SPECIALIZED TRANSLATION ISSUES FROM ENGLISH INTO ITALIAN, DEEPLY DISCUSS ITS THEORY AND PRACTICE, AND THEIR DIVERSIFIED APPLICATION TO SPECIALIZED PROFESSIONAL DOMAINS.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
-COMMUNICATE IN ENGLISH AT A FULL PROFICIENCY LEVEL;
-MANAGE DIFFERENT CULTURAL CONTEXTS AND REGISTERS AS WELL AS TRANSLATE VARIABLY COMPLEX SPECIALIZED TEXTS AND DOCUMENTS;
-APPLY NEW IT METHODS AND TECHNIQUES TO TRANSLATION.

LEARNING SKILLS
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
- CRITICALLY SELECT AND USE THE MAIN TOOLS OF ANALYSIS AND TRANSLATION STRATEGIES, WITH SPECIFIC REFERENCE TO THE SOCIO-CULTURAL CONTEXTS OF USE;
- CRITICALLY ACCESS AND USE BIBLIOGRAPHIC TOOLS AND DIGITAL RESOURCES;
- ELABORATE AND RESEARCH IN PROFESSIONAL AND TEXTUAL TRANSLATION DOMAINS.
Prerequisites
IN ORDER TO TAKE THE EXAM STUDENTS MUST HAVE PASSED THE FOLLOWING EXAMS: ENGLISH LANGUAGE 4, ENGLISH LITERATURE IV.
Contents
THE COURSE WILL BE MAINLY DEVOTED TO THE SOCIOLINGUISTIC ASPECTS OF SPECIALIZED TRANSLATION, WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO THE TRANSLATION OF CULTURE AS WELL AS DIATOPIC AND DIASTRATIC VARIETIES OF CONTEMPORARY ENGLISH IN RELATION TO THE NEEDS OF THE LOCAL TERRITORY. THE FIRST TWO-HOUR LESSONS WILL FOCUS ON A REVIEW OF TRANSLATION TECHNIQUES AND TYPES OF TRANSLATION. A LESSON WILL BE DEVOTED TO THE USE OF THE ARTIFICIAL INTELLINGENCE IN TRANSLATION AND A LESSON TO ACADEMIC ENGLISH DEDICATED TO HOW TO WRITE A SCIENTIFIC ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY WILL CONCLUDE THE BACKGROUND AREAS.


THE “LANGUAGES FOR THE LOCAL RESOURCES & ECONOMIES” MODULE AIMS TO OFFER A THEORETICAL BACKGROUND FOR THE TRANSLATION OF MATERIAL ADDRESSING TOURISM WITH A SPECIFIC FOCUS ON THE TRANSLATION OF THE LANGUAGE OF FOOD FOUND IN TV PROGRAMMES, COOCKERY BOOKS, RECIPES, BLOGS, MENUS, ETC. THE MODULE WILL INCLUDE A TRANSLATION WORKSHOP AND A STRONG LINK WITH THE WORK ACTIVITIES OF THE TERRITORY, WITH THE SERVICES OFFERED BY THE UNIVERSITY PLACEMENT AND THROUGH TARGETED SEMINARS.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE CONSISTS OF A 45-HOUR SET OF LECTURES AND PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES HELD BY THE PROFESSOR IN CHARGE, SUPPORTED BY PRACTICAL LANGUAGE ACTIVITIES WITH NATIVE LANGUAGE EXPERTS ALL YEAR ROUND (FROM OCTOBER TO MAY). EACH LESSON LASTS TWO HOURS.
DURING THE COURSE COMPULSORY TASKS WILL BE ASSIGNED AND EVALUATED AS PART OF THE FINAL EXAM. NON-ATTENDEE STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO STUDY THE FULL PROGRAMME AND BRING ALL THE BOOKS AND MATERIALS AT THE ORAL EXAM. ALL STUDENTS CAN ASK FOR HELP AND SUPPORT BY FIXING AN APPOINTMENT WITH THEIR PROFESSOR.

THE CLASSES WILL BE MADE OF LECTURES. THE SEMINARS COULD BE ADMINISTERED IN BLENDED MODE, ACCORDING TO THE REQUESTS OF THE GUESTS. THE EXERCISES/TRANSLATIONS WILL TAKE PLACE IN SYNCHRONOUS AND ASYNCHRONOUS MODE. ATTENDANCE IS NOT MANDATORY BUT STRONGLY RECOMMENDED. HOWEVER, IF YOU WANT TO TAKE THE TESTS AS ATTENDEE STUDENT, YOU MUST HAVE HAD AN ATTENDANCE OF 80% OF THE COURSE, WHICH IS EQUIVALENT TO A MAXIMUM OF 4 ABSENCES PER SEMESTER. ATTENDANCE WILL BE ATTESTED BY THE STUDENT’S SIGNATURE DURING THE LESSONS OF THE COURSE. FURTHER DETAILS ARE GIVEN IN THE NEXT SECTION ON THIS PAGE.
Verification of learning
THE FINAL EXAM CONSISTS IN A 90 MINUTE WRITTEN TEST AND AN ORAL EXAM. THE FINAL MARK WILL BE THE AVERAGE OF ALL GRADES/MARKS OBTAINED IN THE WRITTEN AND ORAL EXAMINATIONS. THE SINGLE FINAL MARK WILL BE UPLOADED ONTO ESSE3.
SPECIFICALLY, THE WRITTEN EXAM CONSISTS IN A GRAMMAR TEST, READING COMPREHENSION EXERCISES, AND A WRITING TASK.
THE GENERAL ORAL EXAM IS DIVIDED INTO 4 PARTS: 1. A LISTENING TEST; 2. A SPEAKING PART WITH MOTHER TONGUE EXPERTS; 3. WRITTEN TRANSLATION FROM ENGLISH INTO ITALIAN FOR NON ATTENDEES ONLY; AND 4. A FINAL INTERVIEW ABOUT THE WHOLE CONTENT OF THE MODULE. STUDENTS WHO WILL HAVE ATTENDED THE 80% OF THE COURSE ARE ALLOWED TO TAKE MIDTERM TESTS AND SUBMIT AN ARGUMENTATIVE 5.000 WORD-ESSAY, INCLUDING A 1.500/1.800 WORD ENGLISH INTO ITALIAN TRANSLATION, 10 DAYS PRIOR THE ORAL EXAM DATES.

STUDENTS CANNOT TAKE THE ORAL EXAM WITHOUT HAVING PREVIOUSLY PASSED THE WRITTEN EXAM AND CANNOT TAKE PARTS OF THE ORAL EXAM SEPARATELY.

REGULAR ATTENDANCE (80%) OF THE 5TH YEAR COURSE AT THE CLA ENABLES STUDENTS TO TAKE THE WRITTEN PART 2 (COMPOSITION) IN CLASS IN THE SECOND SEMESTER (PROVA INTERCORSO).
LISTENING TEST
THE LISTENING TEST COMPRISES TWO PARTS.
1. MULTIPLE CHOICE (CPE LISTENING PART 3)
2. MULTIPLE MATCHING (CPE LISTENING PART 4)
SPEAKING TEST
THE SPEAKING TEST IS THE INDIVIDUAL LONG TURN & DISCUSSION (CPE SPEAKING PART 3)
THE LISTENING TEST AND THE SPEAKING TEST ARE TAKEN ON THE DAY OF THE ORAL EXAM.

LINGUISTICS/TRANSLATION PART WILL BE TESTED AND EVALUATED AFTER THE LANGUAGE PART (LISTENING AND SPEAKING) AND A TRANSLATION FROM ENGLISH INTO ITALIAN WILL BE REQUIRED ONLY TO STUDENTS WHO HAVE NOT ATTENDED THE CLASSES
