Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH THE BASIC ELEMENTS OF THE DISCIPLINE, THROUGH THE ANALYSIS OF THE HISTORICAL EVENTS OF THE CINEMA FROM ITS ORIGINS TO THE PRESENT DAY, IN THEIR TECHNICAL, SPECTACULAR, HISTORICAL AND SOCIAL CONTENTS. THE CINEMATOGRAPHIC FORM - WITH REFERENCE ALSO TO THE VARIOUS FILMIC 'GENRES' - IS PLACED IN RELATION TO AND COMPARED WITH THE OTHER ARTS, WITH THE AIM OF TRANSMITTING A BROAD UNDERSTANDING OF CINEMA AS A 'NEW ART', BUT ALSO AS AN ELEMENT OF INTERSECTION WITH THE VARIOUS ARTISTIC AND CULTURAL EXPRESSIONS.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE STUDENT WILL DEVELOP A KNOWLEDGE OF THE CINEMATOGRAPHIC UNIVERSE AND AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE RELATIONSHIP THAT MOVING IMAGES HAVE ESTABLISHED WITH THE WORLD OF ENTERTAINMENT AND CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY. THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH KNOWLEDGE OF THE HISTORY AND EVOLUTION OF THE CINEMATOGRAPHIC FORM - FROM ITS ORIGINS TO THE CLOSING YEARS OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY - WITH ATTENTION ALSO TO THE THEORIES DEVELOPED DURING THE TWENTIETH CENTURY FOR THE CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF FILM.
ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO CONCRETELY APPLY WHAT HE/SHE HAS LEARNT DURING THE LESSONS IN ORDER TO BUILD HIS/HER OWN CRITICAL VISION OF THE CINEMATOGRAPHIC UNIVERSE IN RELATION TO SOCIETY, HISTORY AND THE FORMS OF CONTEMPORARY ARTS.
AUTONOMY OF JUDGEMENT
THE STUDENT WILL DEVELOP CONCEPTUAL TOOLS AND CRITICAL SKILLS USEFUL FOR AUTONOMOUSLY EVALUATING HISTORICAL-METHODOLOGICAL ISSUES, SOURCES, MATERIALS AND LANGUAGES OF CINEMA.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE HIS/HER KNOWLEDGE BY EXPRESSING IT WITH PROPERTIES OF LANGUAGE AND LEXICAL SKILLS SPECIFIC TO CINEMA.
LEARNING SKILLS
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND AND INTERPRET COMPLEX TEXTS AND USE BIBLIOGRAPHICAL TOOLS, BOTH TRADITIONAL AND COMPUTERISED, TO IDENTIFY AND SELECT SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE USEFUL FOR ENHANCING HIS/HER KNOWLEDGE.
Prerequisites
NECESSARY PREREQUISITES ARE A GENERIC KNOWLEDGE OF CONTEMPORARY HISTORY THAT ENABLES STUDENTS TO CONTEXTUALISE AND BETTER UNDERSTAND THE EVENTS OF FILM HISTORY.
THERE ARE NO PROPAEDEUTIC PREREQUISITES.
Contents
THE COURSE TRAVERSES THE HISTORY OF CINEMA, FROM ITS ORIGINS TO THE CONTEMPORARY AGE. THE PREPONDERANT PART WILL BE DEVOTED TO PAST PERIODS BECAUSE THEY ARE FUNDAMENTAL TO THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF THE SUBJECT, BUT REFERENCES WILL ALSO BE MADE TO MORE RECENT PERIODS.
THE BASIC OUTLINE OF THE COURSE WILL BE AS FOLLOWS:
- BIRTH OF CINEMA AND EARLY CINEMA 2 HOURS
- SILENT CINEMA (1895-1930) 8 HOURS
- SOUND AND SPEECH CINEMA: GENRES, DIRECTORS AND FILMS 30 HOURS
- PROGRESSIVE DEVELOPMENTS UP TO MORE RECENT TIMES 5 HOURS
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE CONSISTS OF FACE-TO-FACE LECTURES, DURING WHICH FILMS OR PARTS OF FILMS WILL BE SHOWN THAT ARE USEFUL FOR A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE CONTENT TAUGHT. THE MAIN METHOD WILL BE THE RECONSTRUCTION OF THE EVENTS - ESPECIALLY THE MAIN ONES - OF THE HISTORY OF CINEMA, THE HIGHLIGHTING OF WORKS AND AUTHORS, THE ANALYSIS OF WORKS THROUGH EXAMPLES TO BE SHOWN AND COMMENTED ON IN CLASS, THE COMPARISON BETWEEN WORKS AND DIRECTORS.
ATTENDANCE AT THE COURSE IS RECOMMENDED, BUT NOT COMPULSORY.
Verification of learning
THE MODE WILL BE THE ORAL EXAMINATION, I.E. AN INTERVIEW BETWEEN THE LECTURER AND THE INDIVIDUAL STUDENT TO TEST THE HISTORICAL AND THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE OF THE CINEMA AND THE CRITICAL SKILLS WITH RESPECT TO THE FILMIC TEXT ACQUIRED. THE MARK FOR THE ORAL TEST WILL VARY IN RELATION TO THE STUDENT'S ABILITY TO EFFECTIVELY PRESENT THE CONTENT AND CRITICALLY DISCUSS THE TOPICS ILLUSTRATED.
