Objectives
GENERAL OBJECTIVE
THE APPLIED ECOLOGY COURSE AIMS AT PROVIDING THE FOUNDATIONAL KNOWLEDGE ON THE
STRUCTURE AND FUNCTIONING OF ECOLOGICAL SYSTEMS (FROM ORGANISMS TO ECOSYSTEMS) FOR THE
MONITORING OF AQUATIC AND TERRESTRIAL ECOSYSTEMS, THE PREVENTION OF ENVIRONMENTAL RISKS,
AS WELL AS THE MANAGEMENT AND CONSERVATION OF NATURAL RESOURCES.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE STUDENT WILL GAIN INFORMATION USEFUL FOR THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF
ECOLOGICAL ORGANISATION (FROM ORGANISMS TO ECOSYSTEMS), OF THEIR STRUCTURE AND
FUNCTIONING IN NATURAL AND ANTHROPOGENIC DISTURBED CONDITIONS, AS WELL AS OF THE
ECOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF ENVIRONMENTAL COMPARTMENTS (ATMOSPHERE, HYDROSPHERE,
PEDOSPHERE) AND THEIR ALTERATIONS INDUCED BY ANTHROPOGENIC ACTIVITIES.
CAPABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE STUDENT WILL DEVELOP THE SKILLS NECESSARY FOR THE ANALYSIS OF ECOLOGICAL SYSTEMS
THROUGH MODELING APPROACHES, AS WELL AS THE COLLECTION, PROCESSING AND INTERPRETATION OF
ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING DATA.
JUDGEMENT AUTONOMY
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO COLLECT, ANALYSE AND INTERPRET ECOLOGICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL
DATA, DEVELOPING THE SKILLS NECESSARY FOR UNDERSTANDING ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS, AS WELL
AS DEFINING PRAGMATIC APPROACHES FOR THEIR ANALYSIS AND SOLUTION.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
THE STUDENT WILL DEVELOP THE ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND THE JARGON AND COMMUNICATE IN THE
SPECIFIC LANGUAGE OF THE ECOLOGICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DISCIPLINES, ALLOWING FRUITFUL
EXCHANGES WITH DIVERSE ENVIRONMENTAL EXPERTS.
LEARNING ABILITY
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO AUTONOMOUSLY ACQUIRE INFORMATION, BY CONSULTATION OF THE
SCIENTIFIC REFERENCE LITERATURE, FOR CONTINUOUS SCIENTIFIC AND METHODOLOGICAL UPDATES, TO
UNDERSTAND AND INTERPRET COMPLEX TEXTS, AS WELL AS TO CARRY OUT RESEARCH ACTIVITIES.
Prerequisites
FUNDAMENTALS OF PHYSICS, INORGANIC CHEMISTRY AND ORGANIC CHEMISTRY ARE REQUIRED TO UNDERSTAND AND MASTER MOST OF THE TOPICS.
Contents
THE COURSE PROVIDES 60 HOURS OF TRAINING, BOTH IN CLASSROOMS AND IN THE FIELD, FOCUSED ON
THE FOLLOWING TOPICS:
- THE HIERARCHICAL LEVELS OF ECOLOGICAL ORGANISATION: ORGANISM, POPULATION, COMMUNITY,
ECOSYSTEM, LANDSCAPE (6 HOURS);
- ECOLOGICAL FACTORS, ECOLOGICAL NICHE, HABITAT (3 HOURS);
- ECOSYSTEM STRUCTURE AND FUNCTIONING, ECOSYSTEM SERVICES, NATURAL CAPITAL (8 HOURS);
- ECOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF ENVIRONMENTAL SPHERES: ATMOSPHERE, HYDROSPHERE,
PEDOSPHERE (15 HOURS);
- URBAN-INDUSTRIAL ECOSYSTEMS AND AGROECOSYSTEMS (6 HOURS);

- MAIN ANTHROPOGENIC PRESSURES ON ECOLOGICAL SYSTEMS (12 HOURS);
- ROLES OF ORGANISMS IN INTEGRATED ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING SYSTEMS AND IN ECOLOGICAL
RESTORATION APPLICATIONS: BIOMONITORING AND BIOREMEDIATION (5 HOURS);
- NATURE CONSERVATION AND MANAGEMENT (5 HOURS).
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE INCLUDES 60 HOURS OF TEACHING (6 CFU) BETWEEN CLASSROOM AND FIELD LESSONS. IN
IN PARTICULAR, THERE ARE 50 HOURS OF LECTURES IN THE CLASSROOM (5 CFU) AND 10 HOURS OF LECTURES IN THE FIELD (1 CFU). THE LECTURES IN THE CLASSROOM ARE CARRIED OUT WITH THE AID OF PROJECTIONS, THOSE IN THE FIELD WITH THE AID OF INSTRUMENTATION.
ATTENDANCE AT LESSONS IS COMPULSORY FOR 70% AND IS MADE NOTED BY THE TEACHER DURING THE LESSONS.
Verification of learning
ACHIEVEMENT OF THE COURSE OBJECTIVES IS CERTIFIED BY PASSING AN EXAM, WITH A GRADE EXPRESSED
IN THIRTIETHS AND WITH LAUDE IF POSSIBLE. THE EXAM GENERALLY CONSISTS OF AN ORAL TEST LASTING
APPROXIMATELY 30-60 MINUTES AND IS PASSED WITH A MINIMUM MARK OF 18/30.
THE TEST IS AIMED AT VERIFYING THE STUDENT'S ABILITY TO PRESENT, IN AN ORGANIC MANNER, THE
COURSE TOPICS AND ALLOWS EVALUATING BOTH THE STUDENT’S CAPABILITY TO LEARN AND
UNDERSTAND, TO APPLY THE ACQUIRED SKILLS, AND TO INDEPENDENTLY LEARN AND DEVELOP SOLUTIONS.
DURING THE ORAL EXAMINATION, TOPICS RELATING TO THE TEACHING CONTENT WILL BE DISCUSSED AND
THE STUDENT'S ABILITY TO MAKE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THE TOPICS WILL BE ASSESSED.
THE MINIMUM MARK (18/30) IS GIVEN WHEN THE STUDENT SHOWS LIMITED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY
TO MAKE CONNECTIONS AMONG THE TOPICS. THE MAXIMUM MARK (30/30) IS AWARDED WHEN THE

STUDENT DEMONSTRATES A COMPREHENSIVE AND DETAILED KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOPICS AND IS ABLE TO
MAKE CONNECTIONS AMONG THEM.

FOR THE PURPOSES OF HONORS THE following WILL BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT:
-THE QUALITY OF THE EXPOSURE, IN TERMS OF THE USE OF APPROPRIATE SCIENTIFIC LANGUAGE
-THE ABILITY TO TRANSVERSELY CORRELATE BETWEEN THE DIFFERENT TOPICS OF THE COURSE
-THE DEMONSTRATED AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT.
