Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE BASIC KNOWLEDGE ON COMPUTERIZED CATALOGUING OF CULTURAL HERITAGE IN ITALY, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO HISTORICAL-ARTISTIC HERITAGE. IT AIMS AT THE ACQUISITION OF KNOWLEDGE ABOUT CATALOGUING REGULATIONS AND COMPUTER SYSTEMS DEVELOPED SPECIFICALLY BY THE MINISTRY OF CULTURE.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING.
THE STUDENT WILL KNOW THE EVOLUTION OF CATALOGUING ACTIVITY IN ITALY BETWEEN THE NINETEENTH AND TWENTIETH CENTURIES; HE/SHE WILL KNOW THE MAIN COMPUTER TOOLS USED IN CATALOGUING CULTURAL HERITAGE, IN PUBLIC AND PRIVATE CONTEXTS; HE/SHE WILL KNOW THE CATALOGUING REGULATIONS AND METHODOLOGIES DEFINED BY THE ICCD OF THE MINISTRY OF CULTURE; WILL UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE OF CATALOGUING ACTIVITY FOR THE PROTECTION, PRESERVATION AND ENHANCEMENT OF CULTURAL HERITAGE IN THE PUBLIC AS WELL AS IN THE PRIVATE SPHERE (INCLUDING IN MUSEUMS, COLLECTIONS, AND OTHERS); WILL UNDERSTAND THE RELATIONSHIPS AND DIFFERENCES BETWEEN CATALOGUING SOFTWARES; WILL UNDERSTAND THE SPECIFIC MOTIVATIONS THAT HAVE LED SOME LEGAL SUBJECTS (E.G., THE CEI) TO INTEGRATE THE CATALOGUING REGULATIONS DEFINED BY THE MINISTRY OF CULTURE.

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING.
THROUGH THE COURSE, THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: EXAMINE FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF SUBJECT MATTER, TECHNIQUE, STYLE, ICONOGRAPHY AND STATE OF PRESERVATION A CULTURAL PROPERTY OF A HISTORICAL-ARTISTIC TYPE; ACQUIRE APPROPRIATE TERMINOLOGICAL LANGUAGE; ACQUIRE AND PROCESS DATA DETECTABLE FROM A CULTURAL PROPERTY AND ITS ENVIRONMENTAL CONTEXT; ORGANIZE AND MANAGE INFORMATION AND DOCUMENTARY DATABASES; EASILY DIRECT THEIR OWN RESEARCH AND STUDIES IN THE CATALOGRAPHIC ARCHIVES OF THE MINISTRY OF CULTURE AND OTHER SUBJECTS; PROPOSE PROJECT IDEAS TO THE VARIOUS SUBJECTS THAT PROMOTE AND CARRY OUT CATALOGUING OF CULTURAL PROPERTY TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THEIR SPECIFIC NEEDS.

AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT.
THROUGH THE COURSE THE STUDENT WILL DEVELOP A MORE SOLID ABILITY TO READ A HISTORICAL-ARTISTIC ASSET, WHICH WILL TAKE INTO ACCOUNT TECHNICAL, ICONOGRAPHIC, STYLISTIC AND LEGAL ASPECTS; ACQUIRE AN INCREASINGLY BROADER ABILITY TO ANALYZE; AND BE ABLE TO INDEPENDENTLY UPDATE THEIR KNOWLEDGE IN THE FIELD OF CATALOGING HISTORICAL-ARTISTIC ASSETS.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS.
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO CLEARLY COMMUNICATE THE RESULTS OF HIS OR HER RESEARCH, WHILE ALSO ADDRESSING PROPERLY TECHNICAL AND SPECIFIC ASPECTS OF THE CATALOGRAPHIC AND ART-HISTORICAL SUBJECT.

LEARNING SKILLS.
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: USE THE CATALOGUING RESOURCES OF THE MAIN BODIES INVOLVED IN CATALOGUING CULTURAL HERITAGE IN ITALY; UNDERSTAND AND USE FOR RESEARCH THE SET OF DATA IN A CATALOG CARD, DISCERNING BETWEEN CARDS OF THE PAST AND MORE RECENT CARDS, AS WELL AS BETWEEN FILING SUBJECTS; CARRY OUT COMPUTERIZED CATALOGUING OF HISTORICAL-ARTISTIC HERITAGE; PROCEED TO THE CONTINUOUS UPDATING OF THEIR KNOWLEDGE IN THE FIELD OF CULTURAL HERITAGE.

THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH THE BASIC NOTIONS OF CATALOGUING METHODOLOGIES AND REGULATIONS, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO HISTORICAL AND ARTISTIC HERITAGE. IT ALSO AIMS TO OFFER THE ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE NECESSARY FOR THE USE OF COMPUTERISED CATALOGUING TOOLS, ALSO SPECIFYING THEIR MAIN DIFFERENCES. FINALLY, DURING THE LESSONS, THE STUDENT WILL ACQUIRE AN APPROPRIATE TERMINOLOGY VOCABULARY CHARACTERISING THE ART-HISTORICAL FIELD. THE TOPICS OF THE COURSE WILL BE THE FOLLOWING: THE INVENTORY OF CULTURAL HERITAGE IN NINETEENTH-CENTURY ITALY (PRE- AND POST-UNIFICATION); CATALOGUING IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY BETWEEN THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION AND THE MINISTRY FOR CULTURAL HERITAGE; COMPUTERISED CATALOGUING OF CULTURAL HERITAGE IN THE TWENTIETH AND TWENTY-FIRST CENTURIES (SUBJECTS INVOLVED, COMPUTER TOOLS, NATIONAL CATALOGUING PROJECTS); CATALOGUING STANDARDS AND REGULATIONS; CATALOGUING OF HISTORICAL-ARTISTIC HERITAGE.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE CONSISTS OF CLASSROOM LESSONS AND POSSIBLE FIELD TRIPS. IMAGES, GRAPHICS AND TEXTS WILL BE PROJECTED DURING THE LESSONS. SOME HOURS WILL BE RESERVED FOR EXERCISES INVOLVING THE PREPARATION OF CATALOGUE ENTRIES.
Verification of learning
INTERCOURSE CLASS PRESENTATION. EXAMINATION DISCUSSION AIMED AT ASCERTAINING THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE COURSE OBJECTIVES. THE OUTCOME IS EXPRESSED AS PASS/FAIL.
