Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH AN IN-DEPTH KNOWLEDGE OF SOME OF THE MAIN MOMENTS, CONCEPTS AND FIGURES IN THE HISTORY OF WESTERN THOUGHT, ALSO PROVIDING THEM WITH THE APPROPRIATE HISTORIOGRAPHICAL AND CRITICAL TOOLS. PARTICULAR ATTENTION IS PAID TO THE SPECIFICITY OF THE PHILOSOPHICAL CANON AND LEXICON, AS WELL AS THEIR DEVELOPMENTS, ALSO LINKING THEM TO THE HISTORY OF CULTURAL PROCESSES AND PRODUCTIONS.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
-IN-DEPTH KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF SOME MAIN MOMENTS, CONCEPTS AND FIGURES IN THE HISTORY OF WESTERN THOUGHT;
-ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND THE SPECIFIC PHILOSOPHICAL ARGUMENTATION ALSO THROUGH THE GUIDED ANALYSIS OF TEXTS;
-ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND THE PECULIARITIES OF DIFFERENT PHILOSOPHICAL POSITIONS AND TO RELATE THEM;
-KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE SCOPE AND PROBLEMS RELATED TO PHILOSOPHICAL HISTORIOGRAPHY

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
-ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING TO THE BROADER FRAMEWORK OF THE HISTORICAL PROCESS OF THOUGHT, DEMONSTRATING THE ABILITY TO CARRY OUT A PUNCTUAL AND CONTEXTUAL ANALYSIS, UNDERSTANDING CONTINUITIES, CONNECTIONS AND CAESURAS;
-ABILITY TO COMBINE EXPERTISE FROM DIVERSE RESEARCH TRADITIONS AND APPROACHES;
-ABILITY TO LINK PHILOSOPHICAL REFLECTION TO THE GENESIS AND HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF CULTURAL PROCESSES;
-ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND SPECIFIC PHILOSOPHICAL ARGUMENTATION ALSO IN RELATION TO OTHER LANGUAGES;
-ABILITY TO ADEQUATELY USE THE RECOMMENDED BIBLIOGRAPHICAL TOOLS IN RELATION TO THE TOPICS ADDRESSED;
-MATURATION OF AN AUTONOMOUS CAPACITY FOR JUDGEMENT AND CRITICAL RE-ELABORATION.

AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT

THE STUDENT WILL:
- IDENTIFY PRIORITIES AND RELEVANT ISSUES WITHIN GENERAL THEMES
- EXPRESS AUTONOMOUS JUDGMENTS ON AUTHORS AND THEMES STUDIED
- MAKE AN EPISTEMOLOGICAL EVALUATION ABOUT THE POSSIBLE USE OF THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGES AND OF THEIR METHODOLOGIES IN THE CONTEMPORARY CONTEST
- OBSERVE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE THOUGHT OF THE MIDDLE AGES AND THE ONES OF THE PREVIOUS AND FURTHER AGES

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

THE STUDENT WILL:
- COMMUNICATE THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, BOTH IN SPECIALIZED AND DIDACTIC FORM, ALSO WITH THE HELP OF INFORMATICS EQUIPMENT
- READ THE MIDDLE-AGES LATIN PHILOSOPHICAL TEXTS IN A CORRECT AND HISTORICALLY APPROPRIATE MANNER
- SHOW AND EXPLAIN, THROUGH WRITTEN TEXTS OR COMPUTER MATERIALS, THE RESULTS OF ITS OWN RESEARCHES AND EVALUATIONS
- BE SKILLED IN TEAM WORKS

LEARNING ABILITIES

THE STUDENT WILL:
- AUTONOMOUSLY USE THE TRADITIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHIC RESOURCES AND THE NEW ONLINE DATABASES
- ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGES USEFUL TO CONTINUE THE STUDIES AND TO CONTEXTUALIZE LEARNING CONTENTS OF THE OTHER CHRONOLOGICAL PHASES OF PHILOSOPHY’S HISTORY
- CONDUCT RESEARCH ACTIVITY, UNDERSTAND AND EXPLAIN WRITTEN TEXTS OF THE MIDDLE AGES
- CONTINUOUSLY UPDATE HIS KNOWLEDGES, USING THE SPECIFIC SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE

NO REQUIREMENT TO ATTEND THE COURSE.

ANCIENT PHILOSOPHY: THE COURSE WILL DEAL WITH THE MAIN THEMES OF ANCIENT AND LATE ANCIENT THOUGHT, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE PRE-SOCRATIC TRADITION (5 HOURS), TO THE SOPHISTIC DOCTRINES (3 HOURS), TO THE SOCRATIC REFLECTION (2 HOURS), TO THE PLATONIC (5 HOURS) AND ARISTOTELIAN THOUGHT (5 HOURS), TO THE HELLENISTIC PHILOSOPHIES (5 HOURS), AND TO THE NEOPLATONIC PHILOSOPHICAL TRADITION, PAGAN AND CHRISTIAN (5 HOURS).

MEDIEVAL PHILOSOPHY:
IN THE COURSE, THINKERS AND THE CHARACTERISTIC DOCTRINES OF THE HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHICAL THINKING BETWEEN II AND XIV CENTURY WILL BE ANALYZED.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE CONSISTS OF 30 (MOD. A) + 30 (MOD. B) HOURS OF LECTURES, ALSO WITH THE SUPPORT OF SLIDES AND GUIDED READING OF TEXTS.
THE COURSE TAKES PLACE IN THE FIRST SEMESTER.
Verification of learning
THE EXAM CONSISTS OF AN ORAL EXAMINATION TO VERIFY THE STUDENT'S PREPARATION AND SUITABILITY TO USE THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED. THE ABILITY TO EXPOSE THE ISSUES ADDRESSED IN THE COURSE IN AN ARTICULATED WAY, ALSO WITH TEXTUAL REFERENCES, WILL BE ASSESSED AS WELL. THE FINAL GRADE IS AWARDED IN THIRTIETHS, WITH POSSIBLE LAUDE, IF THE CANDIDATE DEMONSTRATES SIGNIFICANT MASTERY OF THE THEORETICAL CONTENT AND THE ABILITY TO PRESENT THE ARGUMENTS WITH CONSIDERABLE LANGUAGE PROPERTY AND AUTONOMOUS ELABORATION SKILLS EVEN IN CONTEXTS OTHER THAN THOSE PROPOSED BY THE PROFESSOR.
