Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE TO EXECUTE QUALITATIVE ANALYZES FOR THE RECOGNITION OF AN INORGANIC DRUG. THANKS TO SINGLE-SEAT LABORATORY EXERCISES, IT IS PROPOSED TO PROVIDE BASIC PRACTICAL LESSONS FOR THE EXECUTION OF ROUTINE LABORATORY PRACTICES TO IDENTIFY INORGANIC DRUGS.

THE STUDENT WILL ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGE OF THE ISSUES RELATED TO:
-ACCESS TO THE CHEMICAL LABORATORY, PARTICULARLY THE SAFETY RULES;
-HANDLING OF HAZARDOUS AND NON-HAZARDOUS CHEMICALS, THEIR PHYSICAL FORM, THEIR HOMOGENEOUS AND HETEROGENEOUS MIXTURES;
-PRACTICAL AND THEORETICAL COMPETENCIES FOR QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS OF INORGANIC DRUGS.

THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
-ATTEND THE CHEMICAL LABORATORY IN THE RESPECT OF THE SAFETY STANDARDS; IDENTIFY AND PROPERLY HANDLE CHEMICAL LABORATORY EQUIPMENT; ACQUIRE THE PRACTICAL SKILLS TO EXECUTE BASIC LABORATORY OPERATIONS TO IDENTIFY INORGANIC DRUGS.
Prerequisites
TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE EXAM, THE STUDENT MUST HAVE PASSED THE EXAMINATION OF GENERAL AND INORGANIC CHEMISTRY. APPROPRIATE PROFICIENCY IN BASIC MATHEMATICS, PHYSICS AND STOICHIOMETRY ARE ALSO REQUIRED.

THE CONTENTS OF THE COURSE CONCERN THE APPLICATION OF THE TECHNIQUES OF QUALITATIVE CHEMICAL ANALYSIS TO THE RECOGNITION OF INORGANIC DRUGS, ACCORDING TO THE INDICATIONS OF THE OFFICIAL PHARMACOPOEIA.
THE COURSE CONTENTS CONSTITUTE AN IN-DEPTH AND APPLICATION OF WHAT PREVIOUSLY LEARNED WITHIN THE COURSE OF GENERAL AND INORGANIC CHEMISTRY:
PERIODIC SYSTEM OF THE ELEMENTS, NOMENCLATURE (2 HOURS)
IONIC EQUILIBRIA IN WATER SOLUTION (CONCEPT OF ELECTROLYTE, ELECTROLYTIC DISSOCIATION, ACIDS AND BASES, STRENGTH OF AN ACID AND OF A BASE AND THEIR MEASUREMENT, IONIZATION OF WATER, IONIC PRODUCT OF WATER, PH, CALCULATION OF PH FOR WEAK ACIDS AND BASES AND STRONG, SALINE SOLUTIONS AND HYDROLYSIS, BUFFER SOLUTIONS, PH INDICATORS) (2 HOURS)
PRECIPITATION (SOLUBILITY AND SOLUBILITY PRODUCT KPS, EFFECT OF COMMON ION, PH, TEMPERATURE AND CONCENTRATION ON THE SOLUBILITY OF POORLY SOLUBLE SALTS) (2 HOURS)
COMPLEX IONS (STRUCTURE AND NOMENCLATURE OF COMPLEXES, BINDING IN COMPLEXES, CONSTANTS OF STABILITY AND INSTABILITY, EQUILIBRA OF COMPLEX IONS) (1 HOURS)

SYSTEMATIC ANION ANALYSIS (2 HOURS)
SYSTEMATIC ANALYSIS OF CATIONS (I-VI GROUP) (8 HOURS)

NOTES ON THE PHARMACOPOEIA AND THE MAIN INORGANIC SALTS OF PHARMACEUTICAL INTEREST (1 HOUR)
LABORATORY COURSE (18 HOURS)
SAMPLE PRETREATMENT PROCEDURES: DISSOLUTION, PRECIPITATION, FILTRATION, PH MEASUREMENT,
ANALYSIS OF CATIONIC AND ANION SPECIES:
• DRY ANALYSIS: CARBONATES, ACETATES, BORATES, AMMONIUM ION.
• ANALYSIS BY WET WAY: SINGLE AND MIXED ANALYSIS OF CATIONS: AG+ AL3+ FE2+/ FE3+ CA2+ MG2+
• ANALYSIS BY WET WAY: SINGLE AND MIXED ANALYSIS OF ANIONS: CL- BR- I-C2O42-PO43-SO42-NO3-
• ANALYSIS OF CATIONS AND/OR ANIONS PRESENT IN A MIXTURE FOR PHARMACEUTICAL USE.
