Objectives
The course aims to provide information to students regarding the mechanisms and effects resulting from drug interactions, with particular interest to elements related to nutrition and to the use of feed supplements in livestock and pets.
At the end of the course the student will know:
-the main mechanisms underlying the pharmacological interactions that can occur between drugs used in livestock and pets, during multi-therapy treatments;
-the main mechanisms underlying the pharmacological interactions that can occur between drugs and foods;
-the main mechanisms underlying the pharmacological interactions that can occur between drugs and main feed supplements.
The student, by applying the acquired skills, must be able to:
-recognize the main pharmacological mechanisms that can determine the onset of interactions between drugs, foods and feed supplements;
-to know how such interactions can be identified and above all prevented.
Prerequisites
Acquisition of Pharmacology content
Contents
The teaching course occupies 48 hours of lectures (6 credits) on the following topics:
- Factors influencing drug response (4 hours): drug exposure, species- or race-related variations, individual variations, pathological conditions;
- Drug-drug interactions (2 hours): principles of interaction on pharmacokinetic basis;
- Pharmacokinetic interactions (2 hours): absorption phase interactions;
- Pharmacokinetic interactions (2 hours): interactions in the distribution phase;
- Pharmacokinetic interactions (2 hours): metabolism phase interactions;
- Pharmacokinetic interactions (2 hours): interactions in the excretion phase;
- Drug-drug interactions (2 hours): principles of interaction on pharmacodynamic basis;
- Pharmacodynamic interactions (4 hours): drug/receptor specificity;
- Specific drug-drug interactions divided into drug classes (4 hours);
- Review and insights into the topics covered (2 hours);
- Chemotherapeutics: factors influencing antimicrobial drug activity (6 hours): use of chemotherapeutics in combination, indications for use of antimicrobial combinations, probiotics, and drug resistance;
- Supplements and nutraceuticals (2 hours): major examples in use;
- Drug/supplement interactions (4 hours);
- Dietary supplements (2 hours): overview;
- Drug-food/medicinal herb interactions (4 hours): main examples;
- Drug-food/nutrient interactions (2 hours): the main examples;
- Review and insights into the topics covered (2 hours).
Teaching Methods
The course consists of face-to-face lectures held in the classroom with the aid of powerpoint projections.
Participation in face-to-face lectures is mandatory and access to the exam requires attendance of at least 80 percent of the face-to-face lecture hours. Attendance will be verified using the easybadge automatic survey system provided by the university.
Verification of learning
Achievement of the objectives of the teaching is certified by passing an examination with a grade in thirtieths.
The examination consists of an oral test, lasting a maximum of 30 minutes, which consists of an interview with questions and discussion on the theoretical content indicated in the teaching program and is aimed at ascertaining the level of knowledge and comprehension ability achieved by the student, as well as verifying the ability to exposition by resorting to the appropriate terminology and the ability to independently organize the topics themselves. The oral test score is aimed at assessing the theoretical deepening of the student. The minimum score will be awarded to the student who shows knowledge on the fundamentals of the types of drug interactions. Honors may be awarded to students who achieve the maximum grade of 30/30 and demonstrate the ability to independently apply acquired knowledge and skills.
