Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE KNOWLEDGE ON THE GENERAL MECHANISMS OF PHARMACODYNAMICS, PHARMACOKINETICS, SYNAPTIC TRANSMISSIONS, MOLECULAR PHARMACOLOGY, DRUG RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT, ADVERSE DRUGS REACTION AND PHARMACOLOGICAL INTERACTIONS, CLINICAL USES, DOSAGE AND SIDE EFFECTS OF DRUGS ACTIVE IN THE TREATMENT OF THE MAIN ORGAN AND SYSTEM PATHOLOGIES, PHARMACOSURVEILLANCE, GENDER MEDICINE AND PHARMACOGENETICS.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
- FUNDAMENTALS OF PHARMACOLOGY AND THE USE OF THE MAIN CLASSES OF DRUGS USED IN MEDICAL PRACTICE.
- GENERAL KNOWLEDGE ON THE MAIN CLASSES OF DRUGS, ON THEIR PHARMACOKINETIC AND PHARMACODYNAMIC CHARACTERISTICS, ON THE RATIONALE FOR THEIR THERAPEUTIC USE AND ON POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
- ABILITY TO DEFINE THE RATIONAL BASES TO CORRECTLY CHOOSE AND USE THE DRUGS ACCORDING TO THE PATHOLOGICAL CONTEXTS, THE STATE OF HEALTH OF PATIENTS AND THE SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE
- ABILITY TO MONITOR THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THERAPY AND TO RECOGNIZE THE POSSIBLE ADVERSE EFFECTS.
-ABILITY TO IDENTIFY AND CORRECTLY RESOLVE THE COMPLEX PROBLEMS RELATED TO THE USE OF DRUGS IN CLINICAL PRACTICE (POLYPHERAPY, DRUG INTERACTIONS, BIOEQUIVALENT USE) DEMONSTRATING AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT, LEARNING SKILLS AND COMMUNICATION
Prerequisites
THE STUDENT MUST PASS THE EXAM OF BIOCHEMISTRY AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY AND GENERAL PATHOLOGY AND PATHOPHYSIOLOGY, BEFORE TAKING THE EXAM OF PHARMACOLOGY AND MEDICAL TOXICOLOGY

Contents
THE FOLLOWING TOPICS WILL BE COVERED DURING THE COURSE: PHARMACODYNAMICS. PRINCIPLES OF BIOLOGICAL ASSAY. RESEARCH AND DRUG DEVELOPMENT. PHARMACOKINETICS. MOLECULAR PHARMACOLOGY. DRUGS ACTING ON THE CENTRAL AND PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEMS. INFLAMMATION, IMMUNOMODULATION AND HEMATOPOIESIS. DRUGS AFFECTING GASTROINTESTINAL FUNCTION. DRUGS TO TREAT PAIN AND MUSCULOSKELETAL DISORDERS. CHEMOTHERAPY OF MICROBIAL AND NEOPLASTIC DISEASES; DRUG ADDICTION; PRINCIPLES OF TOXICOLOGY.

Teaching Methods
THE ATTENDANCE TO THE COURSE IS MANDATORY. IN ORDER TO TAKE THE FINAL EXAM, THE STUDENT MUST HAVE ATTENDED AT LEAST 75% OF THE TEACHING HOURS.
Verification of learning
ACHIEVEMENT OF THE OBJECTIVES IS VERIFIED BY PASSING THE FINAL EXAM. THE FINAL EXAM CONSISTS OF AN ORAL TEST. THE ORAL TEST INCLUDES AN INTERVIEW WITH QUESTIONS AND DISCUSSION FOR ABOUT 30 MINUTES.
IT IS FINALIZED TO ENSURE THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING REACHED BY THE STUDENT ON THE TOPICS DEALED DURING THE LESSONS, AS WELL AS TO VERIFY THE ORAL EXPOSURE CAPACITY, BY USING THE APPROPRIATE TERMINOLOGY. EACH EXAM IS EVALUATED IN A THIRTIETH SCORE SCALE AND IS PASSED WITH A MINIMUM SCORE OF 18/30.
