THE OFAS (ADDITIONAL FORMATIVE OBLIGATIONS) ARE INTENDED TO MAKE UP FOR DEFICIENCIES REVEALED BY THE ENTRANCE ASSESSMENT TESTS. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING AT THE END OF THE COURSE, THE STUDENT WILL KNOW - ATOMIC STRUCTURE AND PERIODIC SYSTEM OF THE ELEMENTS - NOMENCLATURE AND MAIN PROPERTIES OF INORGANIC COMPOUNDS - STOICHIOMETRY AND REDOX: BASIC CONCEPTS AND CALCULATIONS - PROPERTIES OF WATER: SOLUBILITY, CONCENTRATION, INCLUDING THE CONCEPTS OF ACID AND BASE AND PH CALCULATION. ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING AT THE END OF THE COURSE, THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: - UNDERSTAND THE STRUCTURE OF THE ATOM, THE PERIODIC SYSTEM OF ELEMENTS AND THE PERIODIC PROPERTIES OF ELEMENTS - TRACE THE STRUCTURE FROM THE NOMENCLATURE OF INORGANIC COMPOUNDS - BALANCE CHEMICAL REACTIONS FROM THE REACTANTS; - PERFORM STOICHIOMETRIC CALCULATIONS USING THE CONCEPTS OF MOLE, CONCENTRATION, PH, AND SOLUBILITY. |

INORGANIC COMPOUNDS FUNDAMENTALS OF INORGANIC CHEMISTRY: NOMENCLATURE AND MAIN PROPERTIES OF INORGANIC COMPOUNDS: OXIDES, HYDROXIDES, ACIDS, SALTS; POSITION IN THE PERIODIC SYSTEM. (2 HOURS THEORY) - CHEMICAL REACTIONS. OXIDE-REDUCTION CHEMICAL REACTIONS AND STOICHIOMETRY: ATOMIC AND MOLECULAR WEIGHT, AVOGADRO'S NUMBER, THE CONCEPT OF MOLE, CONVERSION FROM GRAMS TO MOLES AND VICE VERSA, ELEMENTARY STOICHIOMETRIC CALCULATIONS, BALANCING SIMPLE REACTIONS, AND VARIOUS TYPES OF CHEMICAL REACTIONS. OXIDATION AND REDUCTION: OXIDATION NUMBER, CONCEPT OF OXIDANT AND REDUCTANT. (1 HOURS THEORY) - SOLUTIONS. ACIDS AND BASES SOLVENT PROPERTIES OF WATER; SOLUBILITY; MAIN WAYS OF EXPRESSING THE CONCENTRATION OF SOLUTIONS. STUDENTS WHO HAVE TO FULFIL OFAS IN CHEMISTRY ARE OFFERED FACE-TO-FACE LECTURES (6 HOURS) ON THE BASIC CONCEPTS OF GENERAL AND INORGANIC CHEMISTRY, WHICH WILL TAKE PLACE IN THE FIRST SEMESTER AT TIMES DIFFERENT FROM THE TEACHING SCHEDULE OF THE FIRST YEAR. THE LECTURES WILL ENABLE THE STUDENT TO ACQUIRE THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF GENERAL CHEMISTRY. DURING THE COURSE, THE STUDENT IS ASKED TO SOLVE PROBLEMS RELATED TO STOICHIOMETRY. THE SOLVING METHOD CONSISTS OF UNDERSTANDING THE PROBLEM, PLANNING THE SOLUTION, AND FINALLY SOLVING IT. THE LATTER STAGE PROMOTES THE ABILITY TO ASSESS THE ANSWER'S REASONABLENESS AND CHECK CONSISTENCY WITH THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF CHEMISTRY. |

AT THE END OF THE COURSE FOR COMPLETING THE CHEMISTRY OFAS, A WRITTEN TEST CONSISTING OF 10 MULTIPLE-CHOICE QUESTIONS, INCLUDING THEORETICAL AND NUMERICAL EXERCISES, WILL BE ADMINISTERED. THE TEST WILL LAST 60 MINUTES. IN THE THEORETICAL QUESTIONS, THE STUDENT MUST DEMONSTRATE A GOOD UNDERSTANDING OF GENERAL AND INORGANIC CHEMISTRY CONCEPTS AND NOTIONS. IN NUMERICAL PROBLEMS, THE STUDENT MUST APPLY THE EQUATIONS AND KEY CONCEPTS OF EACH TOPIC AND DEVELOP APPROPRIATE SOLVING STRATEGIES. THE STUDENT TAKING THE TEST NEED ONLY HAVE A PEN AND A SCIENTIFIC CALCULATOR WITH THEM. TO FULFIL ANY OFAS, STUDENTS MUST BOOK THEIR APPEAL ONLINE TO TAKE THE TEST. |
