Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS AT GIVING STUDENTS THE MAIN THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE ABOUT ORGANIZATIONS. THE COURSE, COMPOSED BY 40, ASPIRES TO GIVE STUDENTS A DEEP KNOWLEDGE NECESSARY TO UNDERSTAND HOW ORGANIZATIONS OPERATE AND TO ANALYSE THEM EMPIRICALLY, APPLYING IN COMPLETE AUTONOMY AND CRITICALLY THE LEARNED THEORIES AND METHODOLOGIES. DURING THE LECTURES STUDENTS WILL BE ENCOURAGED TO IMPROVE THEIR CAPACITY TO COMMUNICATE SCIENTIFIC CONTENTS BY DISCUSSIONS ON ORGANIZATIONAL ISSUES AND EMPIRICAL CASES.
THE COURSE WILL STIMULATE STUDENTS’ LEARNING SKILLS THROUGH THE READING OF HANDBOOKS BUT ALSO TEXTS WRITTEN BY ORGANIZATIONAL SCHOLARS AND THROUGH THE CRITICAL DISCUSSION ON THESE CONTENTS.

KNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSION.

AT THE END OF THE COURSE STUDENTS SHOULD ACHIEVE AN IN-DEPTH KNOWLEDGE OF THE MAIN THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGIC APPROACHES; THEY SHOULD ALSO BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND SCIENTIFIC PAPERS AND MONOGRAPHS ON ORGANIZATIONS AND COMPARE DIFFERENT THEORIES ON SPECIFIC ORGANIZATIONAL ISSUES.

CAPACITY TO EMPLOY KNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSION

AT THE END OF THE COURSE STUDENTS SHOULD BE ABLE TO USE ORGANIZATIONAL THEORIES DISCUSSED DURING THE COURSE IN ORDER TO EXPLAIN AUTONOMOUSLY ORGANIZATIONAL ISSUES AND QUESTIONS.
STUDENTS SHOULD ALSO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THEIR EXPLANATION ABOUT ORGANIZATIONAL QUESTIONS AND ITEMS AND TO IDENTIFY SOLUTIONS TO ORGANIZATIONAL PROBLEMS.
Prerequisites
STUDENTS SHOULD ALREADY HAVE STRENGTHENED SOCIOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE, IN GENERAL SOCIOLOGY (SOCIOLOGY AND SOCIOLOGICAL THEORIES), IN ECONOMIC AND LABOUR SOCIOLOGY (INDUSTRIAL, ECONOMIC AND LABOUR SOCIOLOGY) AND IN METHODOLOGY (METHODOLOGY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES).

THE FIRST PART OF THE COURSE, 30 HOURS, CONCERNS THE CLASSIC AND CONTEMPORARY ORGANIZATIONAL THEORIES. THIS PART CONSIDERS BOTH THE MAIN THEORETICAL APPROACHES AND SOME SPECIFIC ORGANIZATIONAL ASPECTS, SETTINGS, AND ISSUES, AS POWER RELATIONS, TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT, COMMUNICATION, AND ORGANIZATIONAL CHANGE. MORE PRECISELY, THE FOLLOWING ISSUES WILL BE ADDRESSED:
- THE FIRST ORGANISATIONAL STUDIES AND THE RATIONALIST MODELS (BUREAUCRACY AND TAYLORISM)
- CRITICAL THEORIES OF THE RATIONAL APPROACHES
- THE SUBJECTIVE CHANGE AND THE BOUNDED RATIONALITY: BARNARD AND SIMON
- THE POST-TAYLORIST THEORIES, FROM TOYOTISM TO WCM
- INSTITUTIONALISM AND NEO-INSTITUTIONALISM
- THE ORGANIZATIONAL ENVIRONMENT: THE ECOLOGY OF ORGANIZATIONS AND THE TRANSACTION-COSTS ECONOMICS
- ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE
- RECENT TRANSFORMATIONS OF THE ORGANIZATIONAL MODELS, IN PARTICULAR, THE ONES RELATED TO “SHARED CAPITALISM” AND NONHIERARCHIC ORGANIZATIONS (BOSSLESS, LATTICE)

THE LAST PART OF THE COURSE, 10 HOURS, WILL BE DEDICATED WITH A SEMINAR APPROACH TO IN-DEPTH ANALYSIS OF SOME ISSUE, AS GENDER INEQUALITIES, ALTERNATIVE DEMOCRATIC MANAGEMENT PATTERNS, AND THE ORGANIZATION OF SOCIAL AND UNION REPRESENTATION.
Teaching Methods
THE FIRST PART OF THE COURSE IS ORGANIZED WITH FRONTAL LECTURES. STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO ACTIVELY PARTICIPATE AND DEBATE ON THE THEORETICAL ISSUES, STIMULATED BY LEARNING MATERIAL.
THE SECOND PART, 10 HOURS, IS ORGANIZED WITH SEMINAR ACTIVITIES IN ORDER TO DEVELOP SCIENTIFIC CONTENTS AND TO STIMULATE STUDENTS’ PARTICIPATION AND LEARNING ABILITIES: STUDENTS SHOULD READ SCIENTIFIC TEXTS AND DISCUSS. THE ATTENDEES ARE REQUIRED TO ATTEND LESSONS AND TO ACTIVELY PARTICIPATE TO THE SEMINAR DISCUSSIONS DURING THE SECOND PART.
Verification of learning
THE LEARNING PROCESS WILL BE VERIFIED WITH AN ORAL EXAM CONCERNING THE HANDBOOK ON ORGANIZATIONAL THEORIES. THE EXAM AIMS AT VERIFYING THE STUDENTS’ ABILITY TO EXPLAIN THE MAIN THEORETICAL APPROACHES AND TO DISCUSS ON THE MAIN ORGANIZATIONAL ISSUES.
THE EVALUATION OF STUDENTS’ KNOWLEDGE IS BASED ON THEIR CAPABILITY TO AUTONOMOUSLY ELABORATE THE THEORETICAL CONTENTS ILLUSTRATED DURING THE COURSE OR THROUGH TEXTS READING, MAKING ALSO EMPIRICAL EXAMPLES, AND ON THEIR ABILITY TO COMPARE DIFFERENT THEORIES ON SPECIFIC ORGANIZATIONAL ISSUES.
THE EVALUATION OF THE ATTENDEES CONSIDERS ALSO THEIR LEVEL AND QUALITY OF ACTIVE PARTICIPATION DURING THE LECTURES, IN PARTICULAR, THE ONES DEDICATED TO SPECIFIC ORGANIZATIONAL ISSUES, REQUIRING ALSO READING AND DISCUSSION ON SCIENTIFIC TEXTS.
