Objectives
GENERAL OBJECTIVE:
THE AIM OF THE COURSE IS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH A GOOD PRACTICAL AND THEORETICAL GROUNDING IN FRENCH LANGUAGE AND LINGUISTICS, TO PROVIDE BASIC METALINGUISTIC COMPETENCE IN FRENCH AT A TEXTUAL LEVEL, TO BE ABLE TO RENDER A FRENCH TEXT INTO ITALIAN, AND TO ACHIEVE LINGUISTIC COMPETENCE AT LEVEL A2 OF THE COMMON EUROPEAN FRAMEWORK OF REFERENCE FOR LANGUAGES (CEFR). THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES IS VERIFIED IN A WRITTEN AND ORAL EXAMINATION.
THE COURSE CONSISTS OF AN ANNUAL MODULE AND ANNUAL LANGUAGE EXERCISES THAT ARE CLOSELY INTEGRATED AND COORDINATED BY THE TEACHER.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
THE STUDENT WILL:
- WILL LEARN, IN WRITTEN AND ORAL FORM, THE FRENCH LANGUAGE BY REACHING AT LEAST LEVEL A2 OF THE COMMON EUROPEAN FRAMEWORK OF REFERENCE FOR LANGUAGES;
- KNOW BASIC PRINCIPLES AND METHODS FOR ANALYSING TEXTS;
- KNOW THE ORIGIN, EVOLUTION AND STRUCTURE OF THE FUNDAMENTALS OF THE FRENCH LANGUAGE AS WELL AS ITS LINGUISTIC VARIETIES SPREAD THROUGHOUT THE WORLD;
- LEARN THE PHONETIC REFERENCE STANDARDS OF THE FRENCH LANGUAGE DURING THE 20TH CENTURY AND AT THE BEGINNING OF THE 21ST CENTURY.
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO
- APPLY THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE TO EXPLAIN DIFFERENT TOPICS OR THEMES IN WRITTEN AND ORAL FORM
- TRANSLATE SHORT AND SIMPLE TEXTS FROM FRENCH INTO ITALIAN OF DIFFERENT TYPES (NEWSPAPERS, ADVERTISING AND TOURISM)
- EXAMINE SIMPLIFIED TEXTS ON FRENCH LINGUISTICS AND FRENCH-SPEAKING CULTURES.
AUTONOMY OF JUDGEMENT:
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- CARRY OUT CRITICAL REFLECTION ON THE FUNCTIONING MECHANISMS OF THE FRENCH LANGUAGE;
- DEVELOP SUITABLE STRATEGIES FOR MANAGING THE FOUR LANGUAGE SKILLS (LISTENING, SPEAKING, READING AND WRITING);
- EVALUATE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF TEXTS PRESENTED;
- DISCERN THE TYPES OF STRUCTURES, SETTINGS AND CONTENT, TEXTS OF DIFFERENT KINDS (NEWSPAPERS, ONLINE ARTICLES, SUBTITLES OF VIDEOS, SIMPLE SCIENTIFIC ARTICLES, YOUTUBE, WEBSITES) IN ORDER TO SELECT TOPICS AND TEXTS OF DIFFERENT KINDS FOR A WRITTEN COMPOSITION FOR FRENCH LANGUAGE I STUDENTS);
- SELECT TOPICS AND TEXTS OF A DIFFERENT NATURE FOR THE WRITTEN COMPOSITION.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO
- COMMUNICATE IN FRENCH IN EVERYDAY AND UNIVERSITY CONTEXTS;
- REPRESENT AND COMMUNICATE, BY MEANS OF TEXTS OR VIRTUAL TOOLS, RESEARCH RESULTS OR SHORT ELABORATIONS OF THEIR OWN.
LEARNING ABILITY:
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- USE BASIC TRADITIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHICAL TOOLS AND SOME COMPUTER RESOURCES FOR ANALYSIS AND ARCHIVING;
- CARRY OUT BASIC RESEARCH ACTIVITIES, UNDERSTAND AND INTERPRET SIMPLE TEXTS OF AN ADVERTISING OR JOURNALISTIC NATURE;
- UPDATE THEIR KNOWLEDGE, MAKING USE OF SOME SIMPLIFIED SCIENTIFIC TEXTS.
Prerequisites
THE COURSE IS AIMED AT BEGINNERS OR STUDENTS WITH AN ELEMENTARY KNOWLEDGE OF FRENCH LANGUAGE.
Contents
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE THE THEORETICAL BASICS OF FRENCH LINGUISTICS. IT PROPOSES A THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL APPROACH TO ENSURE THE ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE IN EVERYDAY CONTEXTS AND TO READ, UNDERSTAND, SUMMARISE AND ANALYSE DIFFERENT TEXTS IN FRENCH. THE TOOLS PROVIDED AIM TO DEVELOP THE ABILITY TO ADAPT TO VARIOUS COMMUNICATIVE SITUATIONS, BOTH ORAL AND WRITTEN, AND TO INTRODUCE STUDENTS TO DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF FRENCH LINGUISTICS (PHONETICS AND PHONOLOGY, SPELLING, VARIETIES OF THE FRENCH LANGUAGE IN THE FRENCH-SPEAKING AREA). SPECIAL ATTENTION IS GIVEN TO THE WRITTEN AND ORAL EXPRESSION OF FRENCH FROM AN INCLUSIVE AND GENDER-EQUAL PERSPECTIVE.
GRAMMAR EXERCISES AND VOCABULARY STUDY WILL BE USED TO STIMULATE SOCIOLINGUISTIC REFLECTION, DESCRIPTION, AND INTERPRETATION OF THE FRENCH LANGUAGE.

Teaching Methods
THE COURSE COMPRISES 45 HOURS OF FACE-TO-FACE AND INTERACTIVE LECTURES + 88 HOURS OF LANGUAGE EXERCISES WITH THE LANGUAGE EXPERT (CEL).
STUDENTS WHO HAVE NOT EXCEEDED 20% ABSENCES WILL BE CONSIDERED AS ATTENDING.
Verification of learning
AT THE END OF THE COURSE, STUDENTS OF THE FRENCH LANGUAGE I, WHETHER ATTENDING OR NOT, ARE REQUIRED TO SIT AN EXAM COMPRISING A PREPARATORY WRITTEN TEST, THE PASSING OF WHICH IS A PREREQUISITE FOR ADMISSION TO THE ORAL EXAM.
THE WRITTEN TEST, LASTING 3 HOURS, WILL COVER THE TOPICS DEALT WITH IN THE COURSE BASED ON THE CONTENTS OF THE TEXTBOOKS ADOPTED FOR THE STUDY OF THE FRENCH LANGUAGE AND LINGUISTICS. THE STUDENT IS REQUIRED TO PASS A DICTATION TO TEST PHONETIC, PHONOLOGICAL AND MORPHOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE OF THE FRENCH LANGUAGE, STRUCTURAL EXERCISES TO TEST ACQUIRED MORPHOLOGICAL AND LEXICAL KNOWLEDGE, AND A SHORT COMPOSITION IN FRENCH.
THE ORAL EXAM INCLUDES VERIFICATION OF THE MORPHOSYNTACTIC AND LEXICAL KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED IN THE COURSE OF THE LESSONS; CONVERSATION IN FRENCH ON THE TOPICS OF FRENCH LINGUISTICS CONTAINED IN THE TEXTBOOKS ADOPTED, THOSE PRESENTED IN THE CLASSROOM AND IN THE LANGUAGE WORKSHOPS; DISCUSSION OF THE TOPICS THAT THE STUDENT HAS CHOSEN TO EXPLORE INDEPENDENTLY IN THE COURSE OF THE LESSONS; READING, TRANSLATION, SUMMARY/COMMENTARY AND ANALYSIS OF A TEXT ON THE CIVILISATION AND CULTURE OF FRENCH-SPEAKING COUNTRIES IN ORDER TO VERIFY THE STUDENT'S ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND AND DISCUSS THE TOPICS.
THE FINAL MARK WILL BE THE RESULT OF THE AVERAGE OF THE MARKS OBTAINED IN EACH EXAMINATION PAPER.
SPECIFICALLY, THE FINAL JUDGMENT IS FORMULATED BASED ON THE FOLLOWING EVALUATION CRITERIA:
• FAILURE TO PASS THE EXAM: THE CANDIDATE DOES NOT REACH ANY EDUCATIONAL GOAL;
• 18 TO 21: SUFFICIENT LEVEL;
• 22 TO 24: LEVEL FULLY SUFFICIENT;
• 25 TO 26: GOOD LEVEL;
• FROM 27 TO 29: VERY GOOD LEVEL;
• 30 TO 30 AND PRAISE: EXCELLENT LEVEL.
