Objectives
THE COURSE PROPOSES THE THEORETICAL INVESTIGATION OF THE FUNDAMENTAL LINES OF THE HISTORY OF MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY PHILOSOPHY THROUGH THE READING AND CRITICAL INTERPRETATION OF SOME SIGNIFICANT TEXTS FROM BOTH PERIODS. THE COURSE ALSO AIMS TO EXPLORE ALL THOSE FORMULATIONS BORN IN THE MODERN AGE THAT ARE FUNDAMENTAL IN THE CONTEMPORARY AGE. THIS IN ORDER TO CONSOLIDATE AS BROAD A VIEW AS POSSIBLE OF THE CONTINUITY AND DISCONTINUITY THAT RUNS THROUGH THE HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHY AND ITS TRANSFORMATIONS AND PROBLEMS.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
- KNOW THE MOST SIGNIFICANT STEPS IN MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY PHILOSOPHY, FROM THE 17TH TO THE 20TH CENTURIES IN ORDER TO CONSOLIDATE SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE RELATED TO PHILOSOPHICAL DISCIPLINES AT THE POST-SECONDARY LEVEL;
- UNDERSTAND SOME OF THE MAJOR MOMENTS IN THE HISTORY OF MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY PHILOSOPHY THROUGH KNOWLEDGE OF CLASSICS OF WESTERN THOUGHT;
- BE ABLE TO EXTRAPOLATE ALL THAT INFORMATION NECESSARY FOR AN ADEQUATE UNDERSTANDING OF SPECIFIC PROBLEMS EMERGING FROM THE THEORETICAL AND CULTURAL FRAMEWORK OF THE HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE DISCIPLINE AND ITS SPECIFIC METHODOLOGIES OF INVESTIGATION;

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

- JOINING COMPETENCES FROM DIFFERENT AREAS OF THE HISTORY OF MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY PHILOSOPHY FOR A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE EXAMINATION PROGRAM
- APPLY AND INTERPRET INDEPENDENTLY THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED AND USE IT EVEN IN CONTEXTS DIFFERENT FROM THOSE PRESENTED DURING THE COURSE.
- DEVELOP AND EXPRESS IN A CLEAR FORM THEIR ARGUMENTATIVE AND COMMUNICATIVE SKILL.

AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT

STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
- IDENTIFY PRIORITIES AND PREVIOUS THEMES IN THE FACE OF THE THEMES PROPOSED BY THE TEACHER
- FORM AN AUTONOMOUS OPINION ON THE AUTHORS STUDIED AS WELL AS ON THE CONCEPTUAL ISSUES OF REFERENCE ALSO IN LIGHT OF THE HISTORICAL CONTEXT
- TO EVALUATE UNDER THE EPISTEMOLOGICAL PROFILE IF THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED AND THEIR METHODOLOGY ARE APPLICABLE FOR A COMPARISON BETWEEN THE MODERN AND THE CONTEMPORARY FIELDS
- DISCUSS THE FORMS OF ALTERITY BETWEEN MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY THINKING.

THE STUDENT WILL:
- COMMUNICATE THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, BOTH IN SPECIALIZED AND DIDACTIC FORM, ALSO WITH THE HELP OF INFORMATICS EQUIPMENT

Teaching Methods
TEACHING INVOLVES 30 HOURS OF FACE-TO-FACE LECTURES. IN ADDITION TO DIRECT AND IMMERSIVE READINGS IN THE REFERENCE TEXTS, THERE WILL BE MOMENTS OF FURTHER DEVELOPMENT THROUGH CONFRONTATION WITH EXPERTS OF INTERNATIONAL REFERENCE IN KANTIAN THOUGHT AND 20TH-CENTURY PHILOSOPHERS.

Verification of learning
THE EXAMINATION CONSISTS OF AN ORAL INTERVIEW IN WHICH STUDENTS WILL HAVE TO DEMONSTRATE KNOWLEDGE OF THE MAIN THEORETICAL CONTENT OF KANT'S CRITIQUE OF JUDGMENT AND THE INTERPRETATION GIVEN BY SOME TWENTIETH-CENTURY EUROPEAN PHILOSOPHERS, SUCH AS WEIL, ARENDT, HERSCH, ZAMBRANO. THE FINAL MARK IS EVALUATED OUT OF 30 AND IS OBTAINED AS THE AVERAGE OF THE MARK ACHIEVED DURING THE INTERVIEW.
THE EXAM WILL BE PASSED WHEN THE MARK IS GREATER THAN OR EQUAL TO 18.
THE MINIMUM MARK LEVEL IS AWARDED WHEN ONE HAS FRAGMENTARY KNOWLEDGE OF THE PROPOSED THEORETICAL CONTENT OR SHOWS LIMITED ABILITY TO CONNECT THEORETICAL REFERENCES TO THE CONTEXT OF STUDY. THE HIGHEST LEVEL (30) IS AWARDED WHEN ONE DEMONSTRATES COMPLETE AND THOROUGH KNOWLEDGE OF THE THEORETICAL CONTENT OR SHOWS A REMARKABLE ABILITY TO CONNECT THEORETICAL REFERENCES TO THE CONTEXT OF STUDY. HONOURS ARE AWARDED WHEN SIGNIFICANT ARGUMENTATIVE MASTERY OF THE THEORETICAL CONTENT IS DEMONSTRATED THROUGH REMARKABLE OWNERSHIP OF LANGUAGE AND ABILITY TO ELABORATE INDEPENDENTLY EVEN IN CONTEXTS OTHER THAN THOSE PROPOSED BY THE LECTURER.
