Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO INTRODUCE STUDENTS TO APPLIED LINGUISTICS. FIRST OF ALL, IT WILL FOCUS ON THE INTERDISCIPLINARY AND EMPIRICAL CHARACTER OF THE SUBJECT, AND DESCRIBE IT AS A SET OF DIFFERENT MODELS WHICH ARE OFTEN ALTERNATIVE TO THOSE OF ‘TRADITIONAL’ LINGUISTICS. IT WILL PRESENT SOME THEORETICAL AND ANALYTIC MODELS WHICH ARE CHARACTERISED BY AN EMPIRICAL APPROACH TO LANGUAGE USE IN CONTEXT, AND WHICH ARE BASED ON THE COLLECTION OF AUTHENTIC DATA, WITH THE ULTIMATE AIM OF OBSERVING REAL LINGUISTIC PHENOMENA. THE COURSE THEREFORE AIMS TO PROVIDE SOME BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF THE MAIN METHODOLOGIES AND ADVANCED TECHNIQUES FOR THE COLLECTION, ANALYSIS AND MANAGEMENT OF LINGUISTIC DATA. THIS WILL BE ACHIEVED THROUGH LECTURES AND PRACTICAL EXERCISES ON MATERIALS FROM ARCHIVES WHICH ARE AVAILABLE ON THE WEB, AND WHICH CONCERN A VARIETY OF EUROPEAN LANGUAGES. SPECIFIC ATTENTION WILL BE PAID TO THE TREATMENT OF DATABASES OF SPOKEN LANGUAGE.
Prerequisites
STUDENTS MUST HAVE PASSED THE EXAM OF LINGUISTICS 1.
THEY SHOULD HAVE A GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF THE BASIC PRINCIPLES IN THE FOLLOWING FIELDS: PHONETICS AND PHONOLOGY, MORPHOLOGY, SYNTAX, SEMANTICS AND PRAGMATICS BOTH IN ITALIAN AND IN OTHER EUROPEAN LANGUAGES AMONG THOSE THEY STUDIED IN THEIR ACADEMIC COURSE.
Contents
IT WILL FOCUS ON THE INTERDISCIPLINARY AND EMPIRICAL CHARACTER OF THE DISCIPLINE, UNDERSTOOD AS A SET OF DIFFERENT MODELS, OFTEN ALTERNATIVE TO THOSE OF TRADITIONAL LINGUISTICS, AND OF ITS COMPLEX RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHER RELATED DISCIPLINES FOR PRESUPPOSED METHODS AND OBJECTIVES.
SOME THEORETICAL AND ANALYTICAL MODELS WILL BE PRESENTED THAT ARE CHARACTERIZED BY AN EMPIRICAL APPROACH TO THE USE OF LANGUAGE IN SITUATIONS AND ARE BASED ON THE COLLECTION OF AUTHENTIC DATA, IN ORDER TO OBSERVE REAL LINGUISTIC PHENOMENA.
THE COURSE WILL FOCUS:
A) ON THE DEFINITIONS AND COLLOCATION OF APPLIED LINGUISTICS AMONG THE OTHER DISCIPLINES OF LINGUISTIC KNOWLEDGE;
(B) THE PRAGMATIC DIMENSION OF LANGUAGE AS A FIELD OF APPLICATION OF LINGUISTICS;
C) THE PRAGMATIC ANALYSIS AND ANNOTATION OF WRITTEN AND ORAL DIALOGUES AND TEXTS.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE INCLUDES 30 HOURS OF LESSONS DIVIDED INTO TWO LESSONS PER WEEK, WHICH INCLUDE A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF PRACTICE IN THE LABORATORY.
THE FACE-TO-FACE LESSONS WILL BE CONDUCTED IN A HIGHLY INTERACTIVE MODE, INVOLVING THE WEEKLY READING BY THE STUDENTS OF SOME ASSIGNED ESSAYS, THE ANALYSIS AND COLLECTIVE EXPLANATION OF THE TEXTS IN THE CLASSROOM, THE ASSIGNMENT OF NETWORK RESEARCH (AUTONOMOUS AND GROUP) ON CATALOGUES OF LANGUAGE RESOURCES.
THE LABORATORY ACTIVITY WILL FOCUS ON SPEECH ELICITATION TECHNIQUES, TRANSCRIPTION AND LABELLING OF CORPORA SAMPLES, DATA ANALYSIS.
Verification of learning
THE EXAM INCLUDES, FOR BOTH ATTENDING AND NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS, A WRITTEN TEST IN THE CLASSROOM, CONSISTING OF: A) OPEN-ENDED QUESTIONS (SHORT SUMMARIES, DEFINITIONS OF THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF THE DISCIPLINE, ILLUSTRATIONS OF APPLICATION ASPECTS, SEMIOTIC PECULIARITIES OF SPEECH, ELEMENTS OF LINGUISTIC PRAGMATICS); B) TRANSCRIPTION AND/OR PRAGMATIC ANNOTATION EXERCISES OF SAMPLES OF SPOKEN LANGUAGE.

ATTENDING STUDENTS, MOREOVER, MAY, OPTIONALLY, DELIVER A WRITTEN PAPER BASED ON AN APPLICATION WORK (OF TRANSCRIPTION, ANNOTATION OR LABELLING OF LINGUISTIC DATA), PREPARED DURING AND/OR AT THE END OF THE COURSE.

IN THE EVALUATION OF THE EXAMINATION WILL BE CONSIDERED: THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE FOUNDING TOPICS OF THE DISCIPLINE; THE ABILITY TO CONNECT THE DIFFERENT AREAS OF THE DISCIPLINE AND THE APPLICATION OF THEORETICAL CONCEPTS TO PRACTICAL EXAMPLES OF LINGUISTIC DATA ANALYSIS; THE CORRECTNESS AND CLARITY OF THE WRITTEN PRESENTATION; THE ABILITY TO FOCUS, STRUCTURE AND ELABORATE THE SPECIFIC CONCEPTS OF THE WORK; THE CORRECTNESS OF THE SOLUTIONS TO THE PROPOSED ANALYTICAL PROBLEMS.
