Objectives
COURSE AIM
THE OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE FIT WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE OVERALL GOAL OF THE DEGREE PROGRAM, WHICH AIMS TO TRAIN A PROFESSIONAL EXPERT IN THE FIELDS OF MONITORING, EVALUATION, AND MANAGEMENT OF NATURAL AND ANTHROPOGENIC RISKS, AS WELL AS LAND MANAGEMENT.
THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE IS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH A DEEP UNDERSTANDING OF THE CRUCIAL ROLE OF MATERIALS IN THE CONTEXT OF ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY AND CIRCULAR ECONOMY. WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF A DEGREE IN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES, THIS COURSE AIMS TO EQUIP STUDENTS WITH THE TOOLS TO MAKE CRUCIAL DECISIONS REGARDING ECO-DESIGN AND MATERIAL SELECTION TO PROMOTE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND PROPER RESOURCE MANAGEMENT.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING. THE COURSE WILL ENABLE THE STUDENT TO ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGE, WITH THE SUPPORT OF ADVANCED TEXTBOOKS, OF CUTTING-EDGE TOPICS IN THE FIELD OF MATERIALS MANAGEMENT, BY DEVELOPING AND/OR APPLYING ORIGINAL IDEAS, POTENTIALLY EVEN IN A RESEARCH CONTEXT. IN DETAIL, THE STUDENT WILL HAVE KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF:
-THE CLASSES OF MATERIALS (CERAMICS, METALS, POLYMERS, COMPOSITES, MATERIALS)
-THE USE OF MATERIALS IN EVERYDAY LIFE PRODUCTS
-THE LIFE STAGES OF A PRODUCT AND THE CAUSE-EFFECT RELATIONSHIP OF MATERIAL AND PROCESS CHOICES
-THE ISSUES ASSOCIATED WITH MATERIAL SELECTION TO MINIMIZE WASTE PRODUCTION AND THE EMISSION OF ENVIRONMENTALLY AND HUMAN HEALTH-HARMING OUTPUTS
APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE IS TO ENABLE THE STUDENT TO FORMULATE AND SUPPORT ARGUMENTS RELATED TO:
-THE INFLUENCE OF MATERIAL PROPERTIES ON THEIR INTERACTION WITH THE ENVIRONMENTAL SYSTEM
-THE RECOGNITION OF THE POTENTIAL OF ECO-DESIGN IN ACHIEVING A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE
IN DETAIL, THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO SOLVE PROBLEMS IN NEW (I.E., UNFAMILIAR) AREAS, WITHIN INTERDISCIPLINARY CONTEXTS (E.G., RELATED TO CHEMICAL, ENGINEERING, ETHICAL ASPECTS), CONCERNING MATERIAL MANAGEMENT FROM BOTH A REGULATORY AND ECO-FRIENDLY MANAGEMENT PERSPECTIVE.
MAKING JUDGMENTS.
THE COURSE WILL ENABLE THE STUDENT TO COLLECT AND INTERPRET DATA RELATED TO:
-THE THERMAL AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP WITH ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES
-THE ECO-PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS
IN DETAIL, THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO AUTONOMOUSLY INTEGRATE THEIR KNOWLEDGE IN ORDER TO EFFECTIVELY MANAGE THE COMPLEXITY OF ISSUES RELATED TO THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MATERIAL BEHAVIOR AND ITS IMPACT ON THE ECOSYSTEM, WITH THE AIM OF INCORPORATING THE ENVIRONMENT AS A KEY ELEMENT IN ECO-DESIGN.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS. THE COURSE WILL ENABLE THE STUDENT TO COMMUNICATE CONCEPTS, CONCLUSIONS, AND THE UNDERLYING RATIONALE TO BOTH SPECIALIST AND NON-SPECIALIST AUDIENCES, DERIVED FROM THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, REGARDING THE FUNDAMENTAL ROLE OF MATERIALS IN PROMOTING ECO-SUSTAINABLE CHOICES IN RESOURCE AND WASTE MANAGEMENT.
LEARNING SKILL.THE COURSE WILL PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH THE NECESSARY SKILLS FOR SELF-MANAGED AND INDEPENDENT STUDY, ENABLING THEM TO FIND INDIVIDUAL PATHS TO ADDRESS THE COMPLEX AND MULTIDISCIPLINARY PROBLEMS RELATED TO THE SELECTION AND MANAGEMENT OF MATERIALS THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE LIFE CYCLE OF PRODUCTS.
Prerequisites
BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF PHYSICS AND CHEMISTRY IS REQUIRED

Teaching Methods
THE COURSE CONSISTS OF LESSONS IN CLASS.
Verification of learning
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE COURSE OBJECTIVES IS VERIFIED BY PASSING AN EXAM WITH EVALUATION OUT OF THIRTY. THE EXAM INCLUDES A WRITTEN TEST WITH OPEN ANSWER QUESTIONS.
THE MINIMUM MARK FOR PASSING THE EXAM IS 18/30, AND IT IS GIVEN WHEN THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATES A LIMITED KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOPICS OF THE COURSE.
THE MAXIMUM MARK (30) IS GIVEN WHEN THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATES A COMPLETE AND IN-DEPTH KNOWLEDGE OF THE COURSE TOPICS.

HONOR MAY BE GIVEN TO STUDENTS WHO REACH THE MAXIMUM MARK OF 30/30 AND WHO DEMONSTRATE THEY ARE ABLE TO INDEPENDENTLY APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS ACQUIRED EVEN IN CONTEXTS DIFFERENT FROM THOSE PROPOSED IN LESSON
