Objectives
GENERAL LEARNING OUTCOMES:
THE COURSE INTENDS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH ADVANCED THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE FOR THE SOCIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT OF SPORTING ACTIVITIES, CONTEMPORARY MEDIA SYSTEMS (ALSO RECONSTRUCTED IN THEIR HISTORICAL-PRODUCTIVE AND CULTURAL DYNAMICS) AND THE PROCESSES OF SOCIAL COMMUNICATION AFFECTING THE EVOLUTION OF SPORTING CULTURES. THE COURSE ALSO INTENDS TO DEVELOP THE ABILITY TO APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE LEARNT REGARDING THE SOCIO-CULTURAL LINKS BETWEEN MEDIA, COMMUNICATION AND SPORT, IN THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE DIFFUSION OF A MORE ADVANCED STAGE OF SPORTS CITIZENSHIP AND OF THE CULTURAL AND COMMUNICATIVE DIMENSION (IN PARTICULAR WITH REGARD TO DIGITAL AUDIOVISUAL TECHNOLOGIES) INCREASINGLY CONNECTED TO THE SOCIO-CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT OF SPORT.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
THE COURSE WILL ENABLE STUDENTS TO ACQUIRE AN ADVANCED KNOWLEDGE OF THE RELATIONS BETWEEN THE MEDIA AND COMMUNICATION DIMENSION AND THE PERFORMANCE AND SOCIAL DIFFUSION OF SPORTING ACTIVITIES, ALSO AS A SPECIFIC DISCIPLINE OF STUDY, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO HOW COMMUNICATION ACTIVITIES AND THE VARIOUS USES OF THE MEDIA (BOTH ANALOGUE AND DIGITAL), IN THE TIME OF THE ADVANCING MODERNISATION AND THE PENETRATING TECHNOLOGISATION OF LIFE AND SOCIETY, HAVE INVESTED THE SOCIO-CULTURAL IDENTITY OF SPORT AND ITS VERY DYNAMICS OF MANAGEMENT AND SOCIAL INCIDENCE. THE COURSE WILL ALSO ENABLE THE DEVELOPMENT OF COMPREHENSION SKILLS AIMED AT ELABORATING NEW, RESPONSIBLE INTERPRETATIONS WITH A CLEAR METHODOLOGICAL SCOPE, FOR THE SOCIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF THE RELATIONS BETWEEN MEDIA, CULTURAL MODELS, SPORT AND MOTOR ACTIVITIES.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
THE COURSE WILL ENABLE STUDENTS TO ACQUIRE SKILLS AND ABILITIES TO APPLY THEIR KNOWLEDGE AND INTEGRATE THE INFORMATION AVAILABLE FOR THE ANALYSIS, DESIGN, ORGANISATION AND MANAGEMENT OF MEDIA ACTIVITIES AND COMMUNICATION SERVICES FOR SPORT AND MOTOR ACTIVITIES AND SOCIAL WELFARE, WITH A VIEW TO AN INTEGRATED RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MEDIA COMPETENCES AND ADVANCED CULTURAL MODELS FOR SPORT. THE COURSE ALSO AIMS FOR STUDENTS TO DEMONSTRATE THAT THEY HAVE ACQUIRED THE ABILITY TO DESIGN, COORDINATE AND MANAGE MEDIA SYSTEMS FOR COMMUNICATION AIMED AT THE DEVELOPMENT OF SPORTS ACTIVITIES IN SPORTS ASSOCIATIONS, CLUBS AND ORGANISATIONS, DEVELOPING NEW STRATEGIES AIMED AT FOSTERING ACTIVE POLICIES FOR SPORT, ACCORDING TO APPROPRIATE MODELS FOR THE DISSEMINATION OF INTELLIGENT AND RESPONSIBLE CITIZENSHIP AND THE PROMOTION OF WELL-BEING.
Prerequisites
AN INTRODUCTORY KNOWLEDGE OF THE SOCIOLOGY OF COMMUNICATION IS NECESSARY
Contents
THE FIRST PART OF THE COURSE WILL BE DEVOTED TO INTRODUCING THE MAIN SOCIOLOGICAL THEORIES OF COMMUNICATION APPLIED TO SPORTING ACTIVITY. THROUGH AN ANALYSIS OF MEDIA PRACTICES AND POLICIES, THE SPECIFIC FORMS OF SPORTS COMMUNICATION WILL BE PRESENTED. IN THE SECOND PART OF THE COURSE, THE CONCEPT OF THE MEDIATIZATION OF SPORT WILL BE EXPLORED, WITH A HISTORICAL EXCURSUS ON THE EVOLUTION OF THIS PROCESS FROM THE POST-WORLD WAR II PERIOD TO THE DIGITAL ERA. THE THIRD AND LAST PART OF THE COURSE WILL BE DEVOTED TO THE STUDY OF THE REPRESENTATIONS OF SPORT IN THE MEDIA, WITH PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO TV SERIES, FILMS, COMICS AND LITERATURE.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE HAS A DURATION OF 42 HOURS OF LECTURES/EXERCISES.
THE COURSE WILL CONSIST OF TRADITIONAL LECTURES, EXERCISES, DISCUSSION OF CASE STUDIES WITH THE SUPPORT OF AUDIOVISUAL MATERIALS.
Verification of learning
THE VERIFICATION OF LEARNING WILL BE CARRIED OUT THROUGH A FINAL ORAL TEST. THIS TEST IS INTENDED TO ASSESS THE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS ACQUIRED.
THE ASSESSMENT WILL BE EXPRESSED IN THIRTIETHS. THE GRADE (MINIMUM 18, MAXIMUM 30 WITH POSSIBLE HONOURS) WILL BE AWARDED TAKING INTO ACCOUNT: MASTERY OF THE CONTENT, ADEQUACY OF THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL REFERENCES, CRITICAL AND ANALYTICAL SKILLS, CLARITY OF ARGUMENT, PROPERTY OF LANGUAGE.
