THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE THE STUDENT WITH KNOWLEDGE OF THE MECHANICS OF SATURATED MEDIA AND THE ANALYSIS OF FINITE PROBLEMS OF CLOSE INTEREST TO THE COURSE OF STUDY THROUGH AN ADEQUATE KNOWLEDGE AND CHARACTERISATION OF THE PHYSICAL CONTEXT OF REFERENCE, AN APPROPRIATE IDENTIFICATION OF THE GOVERNING EQUATIONS AND THEIR CORRECT RESOLUTION. THE STUDENT WILL: - KNOW THE SIMPLE GEOTECHNICAL SYSTEMS AS WELL AS THE GEOTECHNICAL PROBLEMS RELATED TO THE PROTECTION OF THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT; - UNDERSTAND THE THEORETICAL MODELS FOR THE ANALYSIS OF SOIL BEHAVIOUR AND FOR THE STUDY OF GEOTECHNICAL SYSTEMS. THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: - RECONSTRUCT THE GEOTECHNICAL SUBSURFACE MODEL; - CARRY OUT THE SAFETY CHECKS IMPOSED BY THE TECHNICAL REGULATIONS IN FORCE FOR SIMPLE GEOTECHNICAL SYSTEMS. THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: - DISCERN THE MOST APPROPRIATE THEORIES AND METHODS (IN TERMS OF ACCURACY AND RELIABILITY) FOR THE ANALYSIS, DIMENSIONING AND PREDICTION OF THE BEHAVIOUR OF SIMPLE GEOTECHNICAL SYSTEMS. THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: - WORK IN GROUPS; - ORALLY PRESENT GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING TOPICS. THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: - APPLY THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE TO SITUATIONS DIFFERENT FROM THOSE DEALT WITH DURING THE COURSE; - DEEPEN THE TOPICS TREATED USING ANALYSIS TOOLS DIFFERENT FROM OR COMPLEMENTARY TO THOSE EXPOSED. |
Prerequisites | |
---|---|
THE PREREQUISITES ARE: THE CONCEPT OF STRESS AND STRAIN; THEIR REPRESENTATION VIA MOHR CIRCLES; THEORY OF ELASTICITY; HYDRAULIC GRADIENT. THE COURSE OF STRUCTURAL MECHANICS IS PROPEDEUTICAL. |
Contents | |
---|---|
IN-SITU INVESTIGATIONS AND LABORATORY TESTS FOR SOIL IDENTIFICATION AND CLASSIFICATION (13 HOURS OF LESSON, 4 HOURS OF TUTORIAL). STRESS STATE IN SATURATED POROUS MEDIA (3 HOURS OF LESSON, 1 HOUR OF TUTORIAL). STEADY-STATE SEEPAGE AND TRANSIENT PHENOMENA (8 HOURS OF LESSON, 2 HOURS OF TUTORIAL). MECHANICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF SOILS IN PRE-FAILURE CONDITIONS (8 HOURS OF LESSON, 2 HOURS OF TUTORIAL) AND AT FAILURE (11 HOURS OF LESSON, 3 HOURS OF TUTORIAL). BUILDING WORKS OF PRACTICAL INTEREST: FOUNDATIONS - SHALLOW AND PILED (17 HOURS OF LESSON, 7 HOURS OF TUTORIAL) AND RETAINING STRUCTURES (DIAPHRAGM AND RETAINING WALLS) (8 HOURS OF LESSON, 3 HOURS OF TUTORIAL). |
Teaching Methods | |
---|---|
THE TEACHING INCLUDES THEORETICAL LESSONS (6.8 CFU) AND TUTORIAL ACTIVITIES (2.2 CFU). THE THEORETICAL LESSONS ARE ORGANISED AND CONDUCTED IN SUCH A WAY AS TO ENABLE THE STUDENT TO ENTER INTO THE LOGIC BEHIND THE CORRECT SOLUTION OF GEOTECHNICAL PROBLEMS. THE TUTORIALS DEAL WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF A REPORT ON THE PRINCIPAL TOPICS OF THE COURSE, WITH A PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO THE ASPECTS RELATED TO PRACTICE. SEMINARS AND A TECHNICAL VISIT ON A CONSTRUCTION SITE ARE ALSO SCHEDULED. ATTENDANCE IS REQUIRED AND ACCESS TO THE EXAM REQUIRES ATTENDANCE OF AT LEAST 70 PER CENT OF THE LECTURE AND TUTORIAL HOURS. |
Verification of learning | |
---|---|
THE EVALUATION OF THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE PRE-ESTABLISHED OBJECTIVES WILL TAKE PLACE BY WAY OF AN ORAL EXAM SCHEDULED AT THE END OF THE COURSE. THIS ORAL EXAM (OF ABOUT ONE HOUR) IS NORMALLY COMPRISED OF THREE QUESTIONS ON THEORETICAL, EXPERIMENTAL AND PRACTICAL ISSUES ADDRESSED IN THE TEACHING ACTIVITIES (STARTING FROM THOSE COVERED BY THE EXERCISES WHOSE RESOLUTIONS ARE INCLUDED IN THE REPORT TO BE DELIVERED AT THE BEGINNING OF THE EXAM). THIS ORAL EXAM IS AIMED AT VERIFYING - ON THE BASIS OF THE PERTINENCE AND COMPLETENESS OF THE ANSWERS GIVEN - THE LEVEL OF DEEPENING OF KNOWLEDGE, THE ABILITY TO LINK THE ARGUMENTS, THE QUALITIES OF CLARITY AND CRITICAL SYNTHESIS OF THE STUDENT. THE MINIMUM MARK (18) IS AWARDED WHEN THE STUDENT HAS A FRAGMENTARY KNOWLEDGE OF THE THEORETICAL CONTENTS AND SHOWS A MODEST ABILITY TO APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED TO PRACTICAL CASES; THE MAXIMUM MARK (30) IS AWARDED WHEN THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATES A COMPLETE KNOWLEDGE OF THE THEORETICAL CONTENTS AND SHOWS A REMARKABLE ABILITY TO LINK TOGETHER THE VARIOUS TOPICS OF THE COURSE, ENHANCING IT IN SOLVING APPLICATION PROBLEMS. FULL SATISFACTION OF ALL THE ABOVE-MENTIONED REQUIREMENTS WILL BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT FOR THE PURPOSES OF HONOURS. |
