Objectives
- DEVELOP A COMPREHENSIVE UNDERSTANDING OF DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS AND STATISTICAL INFERENCE PRINCIPLES.
- ACQUIRE ADVANCED STATISTICAL KNOWLEDGE TO SUPPORT INFORMED DECISION-MAKING IN A BUSINESS CONTEXT.
- ATTAIN PROFICIENCY IN SELECTED STATISTICAL MODELS AND THEIR PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS IN REAL-WORLD SCENARIOS.

THROUGHOUT THE COURSE, CASE STUDIES ARE PROVIDED TO HELP STUDENTS RECOGNISE THE ADVANTAGES OF USING STATISTICAL METHODOLOGIES IN A BUSINESS CONTEXT.
Prerequisites
MATHEMATICS (PREREQUISITE)
Contents
THE STATISTICS COURSE IS STRUCTURED INTO TWO PARTS.

PART I – DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS (18 HRS): DATA ORGANIZATION (4 HRS); MEASURES OF CENTRAL TENDENCY (3 HRS); MEASURES OF VARIABILITY (3 HRS); DISTRIBUTION SHAPE (2 HRS); BIVARIATE ANALYSIS ( 2 HRS); STATISTICAL INTERPOLATION (2 HRS); STOCHASTIC INDEPENDENCE(2 HRS).

PART II – STATISTICAL INFERENCE (18 HOURS): PROBABILITY CALCULATIONS (4 HRS); RANDOM VARIABLES (2 HRS); COMMONLY USED PROBABILISTIC MODELS (4 HRS); POINT ESTIMATION AND CONFIDENCE INTERVALS (4 HRS); HYPOTHESIS TESTING (4 HRS).
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE COMPRISES 36 HOURS OF FACE-TO-FACE TEACHING (ATTENDANCE IS NOT MANDATORY), DELIVERED THROUGH A COMBINATION OF THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL LECTURES. THE USE OF EXAMPLES, CASE STUDIES, AND IN-CLASS ASSESSMENTS HELP TO CLARIFY THE METHODOLOGIES AND CONTEXTS IN WHICH THE CONCEPTS TAUGHT CAN BE APPLIED.

ALTHOUGH ATTENDANCE IS NOT COMPULSORY, IT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED DUE TO THE NATURE OF THE SUBJECT MATTER. STUDENTS WHO DO NOT ATTEND CLASSES ARE REQUIRED TO INDEPENDENTLY STUDY THE PRESCRIBED SYLLABUS.
Verification of learning
THE STUDENT WILL BE ASSESSED THROUGH A FINAL EXAMINATION, WHICH WILL TAKE PLACE ON THE DATES SCHEDULED BY THE DEPARTMENT.

THE WRITTEN EXAMINATION, LASTING APPROXIMATELY 60 MINUTES, AIMS TO EVALUATE THE STUDENT’S LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSION OF THE TOPICS COVERED IN THE SYLLABUS, THEIR MASTERY OF ANALYTICAL TOOLS, AND THEIR ABILITY TO APPLY ACQUIRED THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE.

THE WRITTEN EXAMINATION IS STRUCTURED INTO THREE SECTIONS. THE FIRST SECTION CONSISTS OF A SET OF 15 MULTIPLE-CHOICE QUESTIONS ON COURSE TOPICS (DEFINITIONS, TERMINOLOGY, NOTATION, DATA INTERPRETATION, AND RESULT ANALYSIS), WITH A SCORE OF 1 POINT AWARDED FOR EACH CORRECT ANSWER. THE SECOND SECTION INCLUDES AN EXERCISE IN DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS OR STATISTICAL INFERENCE (REQUIRING BOTH PROCESS AND CALCULATIONS), WITH A MAXIMUM SCORE OF 10 POINTS. THE THIRD SECTION CONSISTS OF AN OPEN-ENDED QUESTION ON THEORETICAL COURSE CONTENT, WITH A MAXIMUM SCORE OF 5 POINTS.

DURING THE WRITTEN EXAMINATION, ONLY THE USE OF A CALCULATOR IS PERMITTED. THE CONSULTATION OF TEXTS, THE USE OF MOBILE PHONES, OR OTHER DIGITAL DEVICES IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED.

THE FINAL GRADE IS DETERMINED BY THE SUM OF THE POINTS ASSIGNED BY THE INSTRUCTOR FOR EACH QUESTION COMPLETED BY THE STUDENT.
