AIM: THE SCOPE OF THIS MODULE IS TO PROVIDE THE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS UNDERPINNING COURSE PROGRAMMING FOR NURSERIES AND PRE-SCHOOLS. SUCH EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMES NEED TO TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION THE COHERENCE AND CONTINUITY BETWEEN THE FIRST THREE YEARS (0-3) AND THE SUCCESSIVE THREE YEARS (3-6) TO BE IN LINE WITH THE ‘INTEGRATED AND SYSTEMATIC SYSTEM FOR THE FIRST SIX YEARS OF CHILDHOOD’ INSTITUTED BY LAW N.107 DATED 13TH JULY 2015 AND THE EU DOCUMENTS THAT HIGHLIGHT THE PECULIARITIES OF INFANT AND EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION. LEARNING OUTCOMES: KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: BY THE END OF THE MODULE THE STUDENTS WILL HAVE ACQUIRED THE FUNDAMENTAL KNOWLEDGE RELATED TO COURSE PROGRAMMING AND PLANNING FOR EDUCATIONAL SERVICES TARGETING PRE-SCHOOL YEARS. APPLIED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: BY THE END OF THE MODULE THE STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO DESIGN A COURSE PROGRAMME, ON THE BASIS OF THE CONCEPTS AND THEORETICAL FRAMEWORKS THAT GUIDE THE PLANNING, IMPLEMENTATION AND EVALUATION OF SUCH PROGRAMMES TO GUARANTEE QUALITY EDUCATION FOR ALL PUPILS. AUTONOMY OF JUDGEMENT: BY THE END OF THE MODULE THE STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO AUTONOMOUSLY MAKE INFORMED DECISIONS AND CHOICES WHEN DESIGNING COURSE PROGRAMMES THAT AIM AT PROVIDING A HIGH-QUALITY EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE FOR ALL CHILDREN ATTENDING NURSERIES OR PRE-SCHOOLS. COMMUNICATION SKILLS: BY THE END OF THE MODULE THE STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO COHERENTLY SUSTAIN THE CHOICES MADE IN THE PROJECT DESIGNED, BY MAKING REFERENCE TO THE THEORETICAL FRAMEWORKS PRESENTED DURING THE COURSE AND BY USING THE SPECIFIC LEXIS REQUIRED. |

THE MODULE WILL COVER THE FOLLOWING THEMES: - INTRODUCTION TO THE KEY THEMES INHERENT TO COURSE PROGRAMMING FOR NURSERIES AND PRE-SCHOOLS: THE INTEGRATED SYSTEM 0-6 YEARS (4 HOURS) - REFLECTIONS ON THE VARIOUS APPROACHES TO COURSE PROGRAMMING, THE CURRICULUM AND THE CYCLE – DESIGN, OBSERVATION AND EVALUATION - DIFFERENT METHODS FOR COURSE PROGRAMMING: OBJECTIVES-BASED, INTEGRATED, EXPERIENCED-BASED, WORKSHOP-BASED, INCLUSIVE APPROACHES (6 HOURS) - MICRO AND MACRO PLANNING – DESIGNING AND PLANNING EDUCATIONAL COURSE PROGRAMMES, LESSONS AND QUALITY SERVICE CHARTERS (10 HOURS) - THE CONTEXT, RESOURCES AND TOOLS WHEN DESIGNING COURSE PROGRAMMES – ANALYSIS OF THE SETTING, IDENTIFICATION OF SIZE AND TYPES OF GROUPS, ORGANISING SPACE, ALLOCATING TIME AND SETTING ROUTINES, THE CHOICE OF TEACHING RESOURCES (6 HOURS) - THE STAKEHOLDERS INVOLVED IN NURSERIES AND PRE-SCHOOLS: PLANNING COURSE PROGRAMMES THAT PROMOTE SYNERGIES AND COLLABORATIVE RELATIONSHIPS AMONG THE PROFESSIONAL AND NON-PROFESSIONAL STAKEHOLDERS (4 HOURS) |

THE ASSESSMENT OF THE LEARNING OUTCOMES COMPRISES A PROJECT PROPOSAL (50%) AND AN ORAL EXAM (50%). - THE FOCUS OF THE PROJECT WILL BE AGREED UPON WITH THE STUDENTS. HENCE, MORE INFORMATION WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE DURING THE COURSE. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT STUDENTS NOT ATTENDING THE COURSE ARE TO CONTACT THE LECTURER AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE TO HAVE FURTHER INFORMATION. THE PROJECT WILL HAVE TO BE SENT 7 DAYS PRIOR TO THE EXAM DATE BOOKED. - THE ORAL EXAM IS AIMED AT ASSESSING THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE AND THE ABILITY TO CRITICALLY REFLECT ON THE THEMES PRESENTED IN THE SUGGESTED TEXTBOOKS AND DISCUSSED THROUGHOUT THE COURSE. THE ASSESSMENT CRITERIA INCLUDE THE STUDENTS’ ABILITY TO PRESENT THEIR ARGUMENTS CLEARLY, COHERENTLY AND ANALYTICALLY AS WELL AS THEIR ABILITY TO APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED BY GIVING CONCRETE CONTEXT-RELATED EXAMPLES. |
