Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE THE BASIC ELEMENTS FOR THE DIMENSIONING AND THE MANAGEMENT OF MECHANICAL INDUSTRIAL PLANTS. IN PARTICULAR, THE MAIN PERFORMANCE PARAMETERS OF THESE SYSTEMS, THE DIFFERENT LAYOUT CONFIGURATIONS, SUPPLY TECHNIQUES, AND METHODOLOGIES FOR OPERATIONAL MANAGEMENT OF RESOURCES WITHIN A MODERN SYSTEM FOR THE PRODUCTION OF GOODS AND SERVICES, ARE ADDRESSED.

CONCERNING THE DESIGN PROCESS, THE MAIN KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED THROUGH THE COURSE ARE: METHODS TO CALCULATE THE CHARACTERISTIC PARAMETERS OF THE PRODUCTION SYSTEMS; CRITERIA FOR THE CHOICE OF THE OPTIMAL LAYOUT TYPE, FOR THE SIZING OF PRODUCTIVE RESOURCES AND FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF THE ECONOMIC CONVENIENCE OF THE INVESTMENTS.

MOREOVER, CONCERING THE MANAGEMENT PROCESSES, THE MAIN KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED THROUGH THE COURSE ARE: CRITERIA FOR THE IDENTIFICATION OF THE BOTTLENECKS, FOR THE CALCULATION OF INDUSTRIAL PRODUCT COSTS, FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF MATERIAL SUPPLY, FOR THE CHARACTERIZATION OF LEAD TIME, FOR THE OPTIMIZATION OF HUMAN RESOURCES, FOR THE STUDY OF WORKING TIMES AND WORKING METHODS, FOR THE MAINTENANCE MANAGEMENT, TYPES OF MAINTENANCE POLICIES AND THEIR FIELDS OF USE.

THE ACQUIRED SKILLS ARE RELATED TO: THE DEFINION OF THE OPTIMAL LAYOUT AND THE SIZE OF PRODUCTION RESOURCES AND OF THEIR EFFICIENCY; TTHE APPLICATION OF THE MAIN RE-INTEGRATION SUPPLY TECHNIQUES; THE IDENTIFICATION OF THE STANDARD TIMES AND OF THE NUMBER OF OPERATORS NEEDED IN PRODUCTION PROCESSES; THE IDENTIFICATION AND THE MANAGEMENT OF BOTTLENECKS.

INDEPENDENCE OF JUDGMENT
THE STUDENT ACQUIRES THE ABILITY TO INDEPENDENTLY FORMULATE A LAYOUT OF AN INDUSTRIAL PLANT AND TO APPLY THE APPROPRIATE MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES IN THE PRESENCE OF THE PROBLEMS STUDIED.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
THE STUDENT ACQUIRES THE ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY ON TOPICS RELATED TO THE CONFIGURATION OF AN INDUSTRIAL PLANT AND THE MAIN MANAGEMENT ISSUES.

LEARNING ABILITY
THE STUDENT ACQUIRES THE ABILITY TO INDEPENDENTLY LEARN MORE IN-DEPTH AND SPECIFIC SKILLS IN THE FIELD OF THE DESIGN AND MANAGEMENT OF INDUSTRIAL PLANTS.
Prerequisites
IN ORDER TO BENEFIT FROM THE COURSE TOPICS, PRELIMINARY KNOWLEDGE, ABOUT THE MAIN MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGIES USED IN THE MANUFACTURING SECTOR AND THE MECHANICAL DESIGN, IS NEEDED. IN ADDITION, THE KNOWLEDGE OF BASIC COMPUTER SKILLS IS REQUIRED, SUCH AS FLOW DIAGRAMS AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF SIMPLE PROCEDURES.

Teaching Methods
The course involves theoretical lessons and classroom exercises. The latter are specifically developed according to the enunciated theoretical concepts and aimed at verifying the ability to numerically apply techniques and models on concrete cases, expressly simplified. For each topic, an exercise of at least 2h is proposed. The exercises are developed in alternation with the theory and providing the exercise details in advance.
Verification of learning
VERIFICATION CONSISTS OF A WRITTEN EXERCISE AND AN ORAL EXAM. THE VOTE, EXPRESSED IN THIRTIETHS (WITH EVENTUAL HONOURS), IS THE RESULT OF THE AVERAGE OF THE VOTES GIVEN IN THE TWO AFOREMENTIONED PARTIES (THIRTIETHS). IN THE WRITTEN EXERCISE, THREE QUESTIONS ARE ASKED ABOUT THE SIZING OF THE PRODUCTION SYSTEMS. THE FIRST QUESTION IS EVALUATED WITH A MAXIMUM OF 18 POINTS, INSTEAD THE SECOND AND THE THIRD ONES WITH A MAXIMUM OF 6 POINTS. THE WRITTEN EXERCISE HAS A MINIMUM THRESHOLD FOR THE ACCESS TO THE ORAL EXAM, FIXET TO 18/30,AND IT CONCURS WITH THE DEFINITION OF THE FINAL VOTE. DURING THE ORAL EXAM, EVENTUAL LACKS FOUND IN THE EXERCISE ARE INVESTIGATED AND FURTHER KNOWLEDGE ON 5 DIFFERENT DESIGN AND MANAGEMENT TOPICS ARE EXAMINED. ORAL EXAM IS EXPRESSED IN THIRTIETHS FOR EACH QUESTION, AND A SUBSEQUENT ARITHMETIC MEAN IS MADE. THE FINAL VOTE IS THE AVERAGE BETWEEN THE VOTE OF THE EXERCISE AND OF THE ORAL EXAM; IF THE ORAL EXAM IS HIGH QUALITY AND THE ABILITY TO CREATE LOGICAL LINKS BETWEEN THE VARIOUS TOPICS OCCURS, THE MAXIMUM EVALUATION WITH HONOUR IS ASSIGNED. THE MINIMUM LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED TO PASS THE EXAM INCLUDES THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF DIMENSIONING OF THE PRODUCTION RESOURCES, THE MAIN ASPECTS OF THE LAYOUT STUDY, THE PERFORMANCE PARAMETERS OF THE PRODUCTION SYSTEMS, THE BASIC CONCEPTS RELATING TO INVENTORY MANAGEMENT, THE CALCULATION OF AN ECONOMIC LOT OF PURCHASE OR PRODUCTION, THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF MAINTENANCE.
