THE MAIN GOAL OF THE COURSE IS TO GIVE OUR STUDENTS THE THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE OF THE METHODOLOGIES USED DURING THE INTERPRETATION OF ANCIENT COINS FROM MULTILAYERED DIG SITES. THE KIND OF DISCOVERY (SINGLE SPECIMEN OR TREASURE) AND THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE COINS AND THE SOIL WITH ALL ITS ARCHAEOLOGICAL EVIDENCES WILL BE ONE OF THE CENTRAL TOPIC OF THE COURSE. THE PRACTICAL EXERCISES WILL FORM AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE LECTURES, THEY ARE DESIGNED TO STUDY THE ANCIENT COINS IN DEPTH THROUGH THE CORRECT ANALYSIS (IDENTIFICATION AND CLASSIFICATION) OF EACH SPECIMEN OFFERING A COMPLETE OVERVIEW OF THE SUBJECT FROM THE FIRST CONSERVATIVE TREATMENT TO THE PUBLICATION OF THE DATA. OUR STUDENTS WILL LEARN FUNDAMENTAL SKILLS IN ORDER TO ACQUIRE THE ABILITY TO CRITICALLY EVALUATE INFORMATION. THE CATALOGUING AND THE INTERPRETATION OF THE COIN IN ITS ARCHAEOLOGICAL CONTEXT WILL ENABLE THE STUDENTS TO USE THE NUMISMATIC DATA AS HISTORICAL SOURCE, THIS WILL GIVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO RECONSTRUCT THE ANCIENT TIMES MAKING POSSIBLE NOT ONLY THE DATING OF THE CONTEXT ITSELF AND THE COMPREHENSION OF THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL SEQUENCES, BUT ALSO ALLOWING THE IDENTIFICATION OF THE DYNAMICS OF CIRCULATION AND THE HISTORICAL ECONOMIC PROCESSES. |
Prerequisites | |
---|---|
BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF NUMISMATICS, ANCIENT HISTORY AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL METHODOLOGY. |

IN THE FIRST PART OF THE COURSE WILL BE PRESENTED ALL THE ELEMENTS THAT ARE NECESSARY TO SET UP A CORRECT STUDY OF FIND (THE COIN) IN CONNECTION WITH THE PLACE (THE CONTEXT) WHERE IT WAS FOUND. THE ORIGIN OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN NUMISMATICS AND ARCHAEOLOGY AND THE METHODS THAT PERMIT A COMPLETE ANALYSIS OF THE FIND WILL BE THE CENTRAL TOPICS OF THE LECTURES; FURTHERMORE, TWO CASE STUDIES (ROME AND POMPEII) WILL HELP US TO DEFINE THE NATURE OF THE CONTEXTS (FUNERARY/RELIGIOUS CONTEXT, DONATIONS, HOARDING, ISOLATED CASE, ETC.) AND TO EXPLAIN THE LAYING PROCESS OF EACH SPECIMEN (PRIMARY/SECONDARY POSITION, RESIDUAL COIN, DATING/CIRCULATING RESIDUAL COIN). THE RESEARCHES ABOUT THE DISTRIBUTION OF THE FINDINGS AND THE USE OF SEVERAL STATISTICS WILL BE DEALT WITH NOT FORGETTING THE IMPORTANCE OF THE ARCHAEOMETRIC ANALYSIS FOR A PROPER PUBLICATION; FINALLY, THERE WILL BE A DISCUSSION ON SUBJECTS CONCERNING THE USE AND THE CIRCULATION OF COIN IN CONNECTION WITH THE ECONOMIC, SOCIAL AND POLITICAL HISTORY OF THE SOCIETIES THAT USED THE COINAGE. IN THE SECOND PART OF THE COURSE THE STUDENTS WILL BE INVOLVED IN PRACTICAL EXERCISES FOCUSED ON THE CATALOGUING AND ON THE CLASSIFICATION OF ANCIENT COINS. THESE ACTIVITIES WILL BE PRECEDED BY A PRESENTATION OF THE NECESSARY RULES FOR THE ACCURATE COMPLETION OF THE "NU" FORM AND BY A GENERAL OUTLINE OF THE MAIN NUMISMATIC CATALOGUES. |
Teaching Methods | |
---|---|
LECTURES. FIRST PART OF THE COURSE: 20 HRS / POWERPOINT PRESENTATIONS. SECOND PART OF THE COURSE: 4 HRS / LECTURES; 6 HRS / PRACTICAL EXERCISES USING POWERPOINT PRESENTATIONS AND NUMISMATICS CATALOGUES (PUBLISHED ON PAPER AND IN ELECTRONIC FORMAT) IN ORDER TO TEST THE ACQUIRED SKILLS. |
Verification of learning | |
---|---|
THE EXAMINATION IS SPLIT INTO TWO SEPARATE TESTS: THE ORAL TEST AND THE INTERMEDIATE CHECK. THE ORAL TEST IS ABOUT THE TOPICS OF THE COURSE AND IT IS NECESSARY TO CERTIFY THE COMMUNICATION SKILLS AND THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE OF EACH STUDENT. THE AIM OF THE INTERMEDIATE CHECK IS TO EVALUATE IF THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY AND TO CATALOGUE A SPECIMEN. |
