GENERAL OBJECTIVE THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE BASIC SCIENTIFIC, THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE FOR USING NUMISMATIC DOCUMENTATION FROM THE GREEK AND ROMAN PERIODS AS A SOURCE OF HISTORICAL KNOWLEDGE. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING STUDENTS WILL LEARN ABOUT: - THE CHARACTERISTICS OF COINS FROM THEIR ORIGINS TO THE FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE; - THE NATURE AND FUNCTION OF COINS, THROUGH THE STUDY OF THEIR ICONOGRAPHIC AND WEIGHT CHARACTERISTICS AND THEIR DISCOVERY IN ARCHAEOLOGICAL CONTEXTS; STUDENTS WILL ALSO LEARN TO RECOGNISE AND CLASSIFY NUMISMATIC FINDINGS WITH THE AID OF APPROPRIATE BIBLIOGRAPHIC TOOLS. ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING STUDENTS WILL ACQUIRE THE ABILITY TO: - USE NUMISMATIC DOCUMENTATION IN RESEARCH FIELDS RELATED TO THE SCIENCES OF ANTIQUITY; - ADDRESS ISSUES OF PROTECTION AND VALORISATION OF GREEK AND ROMAN COINS FROM EXCAVATIONS OR COLLECTIONS. AUTONOMY OF JUDGEMENT DURING THE COURSE, STUDENTS WILL LEARN TO: - USE METHODOLOGIES SPECIFIC TO THE DISCIPLINE AND THUS DEVELOP THEIR CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS AND INDEPENDENT JUDGEMENT; - CRITICALLY EVALUATE THE CONTRIBUTION OF THE DISCIPLINE IN THE FIELD OF ANCIENT HISTORY. COMMUNICATION SKILLS STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO: - EFFECTIVELY COMMUNICATE THE CONTENT AND METHODOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE LEARNED, ORALLY AND BY PREPARING POWER POINT PRESENTATIONS OR WRITTEN PAPERS; - CLEARLY COMPILE THE CATALOGUING SHEETS FOR MONETARY FINDINGS. LEARNING SKILLS STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO: - USE TRADITIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHIC TOOLS AND COMPUTER RESOURCES FOR THE ANALYSIS AND CATALOGUING OF COINS; - CARRY OUT RESEARCH USING ANCIENT COINS IN THE FIELD OF HISTORY AND ARCHAEOLOGY; - APPROACH THE STUDY OF OTHER DISCIPLINES IN THE FIELD OF ANCIENT HISTORY AND IN HIGHER LEVELS OF EDUCATION IN THE FIELDS OF CLASSICAL PHILOLOGY, ANCIENT HISTORY AND ARCHAEOLOGY WITH APPROPRIATE CRITICAL TOOLS. |

FEATURES OF THE GREEK AND ROMAN COINS: TYPES, MINTING AND MINTS, WEIGTH STANDARDS. COINS INTO CIRCULATION; PURPOSE OF COINAGE. INFORMATIONS ABOUT THE PRESENT DIRECTION OF THE NUMISMATIC RESEARCHS. NUMISMATICS AND ARCHAELOGY: THE STUDIES OF THE COIN FINDS; THE METHOD FOR THE COIN CLASSIFICATION AND CATALOGUING (ORE 30 LECTURES). DURING THIS COURSE, THE STUDENTS WILL CATALOG GREEK AND ROMAN COINS UNDER FACULTY GUIDANCE. AT THE END OF THIS PRACTICAL UNIT, THE SUCCESSFUL STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO CORRECTLY IDENTIFY ANCIENT COINS, CATALOGUE THEM AND FILL NU FORMS, AND USE THE MAIN NUMISMATIC CATALOGUES. METHODOLOGICAL AND PRACTICAL TOPICS WILL ALSO BE DISCUSSED, IN PARTICULAR IN RELATION TO THE INTERPRETATION OF COINS FROM COMPLEX ARCHAEOLOGICAL CONTEXTS. |

THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE TEACHING OBJECTIVES IS CERTIFIED BY PASSING AN EXAMINATION WITH AN ASSESSMENT IN THIRTIETHS. THE EXAMINATION INCLUDES AN ORAL TEST, LASTING APPROXIMATELY 30/40 MINUTES, DURING WHICH QUESTIONS RELATING TO THE MONETARY HISTORY OF THE GREEK AND ROMAN PERIODS WILL BE ASKED; THE STUDENT WILL HAVE TO DEMONSTRATE THAT HE/SHE IS ABLE TO RECOGNISE AND READ AN ANCIENT COIN AND THAT HE/SHE HAS ACQUIRED THE SCIENTIFIC, THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL NOTIONS TO USE NUMISMATIC DOCUMENTATION AS A SOURCE OF HISTORICAL KNOWLEDGE. THE MINIMUM MARK TO PASS THE EXAM IS 18/30 AND WILL BE AWARDED TO THE STUDENT WHO SHOWS A GENERIC KNOWLEDGE OF NUMISMATICS, BUT A LIMITED ABILITY TO FOCUS ON THE FUNDAMENTAL AND SCIENTIFIC ISSUES OF THE DISCIPLINE AND A POOR ABILITY TO PLACE THE COIN IN ITS HISTORICAL, SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC CONTEXT. HONOURS MAY BE AWARDED TO STUDENTS WHO ACHIEVE A MAXIMUM MARK OF 30/30 AND DEMONSTRATE COMPLETE MASTERY OF NUMISMATIC RESEARCH METHODS AND ANALYSIS OF MONETARY DOCUMENTATION AS A SOURCE OF HISTORICAL KNOWLEDGE. |
