TO POSSESS A BASIC UNDERSTANDING OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF MEDIEVAL ART AND FULL AWARENESS OF THE PROBLEMS OF PERIODIZATION AND OF THE MOST IMPORTANT HISTORIOGRAPHICAL ISSUES. TO ACHIEVE SOME PRACTICE IN THE EXERCISE OF READING AND RECONSTRUCTING ACCURATELY HISTORICAL AND ARTISTIC ARTIFACTS. |

THE COURSE AIMS TO OUTLINE THE MAIN FEATURES OF THE HISTORY OF MEDIEVAL ART, FROM THE EARLY CHRISTIAN PERIOD TO INTERNATIONAL GOTHIC COURTS, AND TO ADDRESS SOME GENERAL PROBLEMS OF METHOD AND PERIODIZATION. SOME OF THE MOST REPRESENTATIVE WORKS OF DIFFERENT PERIODS AND CULTURES WILL BE ANALYZED, IN ORDER TO INTEGRATE KNOWLEDGE ALREADY ACQUIRED BY STUDENTS IN HIGH SCHOOLS. |

ORAL QUESTIONS, MINIMUM 3, IN ORDER TO EVALUATE THE STUDENT'S KNOWLEDGE OF THE ENTIRE ART HISTORY OF THE MIDDLE AGES (400 CA.-1400 CA.) AND ITS CRONOLOGICAL SUBDIVISIONS, AS THEY WERE RECOGNIZED BY ARTISTIC STORIOGRAPHY. THE QUESTIONS AIM TO LED THE STUDENT TOWARDS THE IDENTIFICATION OF THE ARTWORK OR ARCHITECTURE EXAMINED, THROUGH ITS CHARACTERIZING ELEMENTS (STYLE, MATERIALS, TECNIQUES) IN ORDERD TO RECOGNIZE ITS PATRONAGE AND PROCESS OF PRODUCTION, AND TO RECONSTRUCT ITS CONTEXTS WITH PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO HISTORY, CULTURE, ICONOGRAPHY AND FUNCTION OF THE ARTWORK/ARCHITECTURE. THE EVALUATION OF THE STUDENT CONSIDERS NOT ONLY HIS/HER ABILITY IN RECOGNISING ARTWORKS OR ARCHITECTURES, BUT ALSO - AND ABOVE ALL - HIS/HER ABILITY OF RE-CONNECTING ARTWORKS OR ARCHITECTURES TO THEIR HISTORIC AND CULTURAL FRAMEWORKS AND HIS/HER MATURITY OF BOTH REASONMENT AND ARGUMENTATION. |
