Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO GIVE MAIN ELEMENTS AND CRITERIA FOR AN ADEQUATE KNOWLEDGE OF MEDIEVAL ART HISTORY (ARCHITECTURE, PAINTING, SCULPTURE, ILLUMINATION...), IN ORDER GIVE MAJOR HINTS ON CRONOLOGICAL ART HISTORY SUBDIVISIONS AND ALSO ON MAIN HISTORIOGRAPHICAL ISSUES ON EUROPEAN MEDIEVAL ART.
SELECTED ARTISTIC CONTEXTS WILL BE ANALISED IN ORDER TO TEACH A METHODOLOGY OF ANALISYS OF TECHNICAL, ARTISTIC AND CULTURAL FEATURES OF THE WORK OF ARTS.
THE STUDENS WILL ACQUIRE ABILITIES IN READING WORKS OF ART, RECOGNISING ITS ARTISTIC FEATURES AND RE-CONTEXTUALISING THEM WITH REFERENCE TO HISTORY, CULTURE AND PATRONAGE.
Prerequisites
NONE PREREQUISITE REQUIRED.
HOWEVERE, IT IS STRONGLY SUGGEST THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE MAIN HISTORICAL EVENTS OF THE MANY CENTURY OF THE MIDDLE AGES, WITH PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO THE PAPACY, THE EMPIRE AND SOVEREINGS IN SOUTHERN ITALY.

THE COURSE AIMS TO OUTLINE THE MAIN FEATURES OF THE HISTORY OF MEDIEVAL ART, FROM THE EARLY CHRISTIAN PERIOD TO INTERNATIONAL GOTHIC COURTS, AND TO ADDRESS SOME GENERAL PROBLEMS OF METHOD AND PERIODIZATION. SOME OF THE MOST REPRESENTATIVE WORKS OF DIFFERENT PERIODS AND CULTURES WILL BE ANALYZED, IN ORDER TO INTEGRATE KNOWLEDGE ALREADY ACQUIRED BY STUDENTS IN HIGH SCHOOLS.

1. CLARITY OF SPEACHING AND USE OF TECHNICAL VOCABULARY FOR MEDIEVAL ART
2. ABILTY OF EXPOSING, SELECTING MAIN ISSUES FOR THE ANALISYS OF MEDIEVAL WORK OF ARTS
3. COMPREHENSION OF THE ARTISTIC PROBLEM AND ABILITY OF RE-CONTEXTUALISING IT WITH REFERENC TO MEDIEVAL HISTORY, CULTURE AND PATRONAGE
4. KNOLEDGWE OF THE MAIN ITALIAN AND EUROPEAN ARTISTIC FRAME OF MEDIEVAL ART HISTORY AND ABILITY OF RELATING THE SINGLE WORK OF ART TO THE BIGGER CULTURAL PANORAMA
