COMMUNICATION SKILLS
THE STUDENT IS GOING TO ACQUIRE PROPERTY OF LANGUAGE AND EXPRESSION, MAKING USE OF SPECIFIC TERMINOLOGY COMMONLY USED IN THE INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE.

LEARNING SKILLS
THE STUDENT IS GOING TO STRENGTHEN HIS OR HER LEARNING AND ANALYTICAL SKILLS THROUGHOUT THE STUDY OF SELECTED BIBLIOGRAPHY, THE USE OF DIGITAL TOOLS, THE AUTONOMOUS AUTOPTIC ANALYSIS OF MONUMENTS/WORKS OF ART AND MUSEUMS.
Prerequisites
NONE PREREQUISITE REQUIRED.
HOWEVER, IT IS STRONGLY SUGGESTED THE KNOWLEDGE OF MAIN HISTORICAL EVENTS DURING MIDDLE AGES, WITH PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO THE PAPACY, THE EMPIRE AND SOVEREIGNS IN SOUTHERN ITALY.
Contents
THE COURSE AIMS TO OUTLINE THE MAIN FEATURES OF THE HISTORY OF MEDIEVAL ART SELECTED FROM THE EARLY CHRISTIAN PERIOD TO THE LATE MIDDLE AGESS, AND TO ADDRESS SOME GENERAL PROBLEMS OF METHOD AND PERIODIZATION. SOME OF SOME OF THE MOST REPRESENTATIVE WORKS OF THE DIFFERENT PERIODS AND CULTURES WILL BE SELECTED AND ANALYSED, FOLLOWING A CHRONOLOGICAL PROGRESSION FROM LATE ANTIQUITY TO THE LATE MIDDLE AGES, AND TOUCHING VARIOUS AREAS OF EUROPE AND THE MEDITERRANEAN COUNTRIES.
PARTICULAR ATTENTION WILL BE GIVEN TO THE AREA OF SOUTHERN ITALY, UNDER LONGOBARD, NORMAN, SWABIAN AND ANGEVIN DOMINATION, ENCOURAGING STUDENTS TO CARRY OUT AUTONOMOUS IN-SITU ANALYSES OF MONUMENTS AND WORKS OF ART.
THE COURSE THUS AIMS TO PROVIDE A SOLID FRAMEWORK OF THE MAIN FACTS OF THE HISTORY OF MEDIEVAL ART, SUFFICIENT TO PROVIDE THE NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE BASE BOTH FOR FUTURE IN-DEPTH STUDY OF THE SPECIFIC SUBJECT AND FOR THE CONTINUATION OF THE DEGREE COURSE.
Teaching Methods
LECTURES WITH PROJECTION OF IMAGES AND IN-SITU LECTURES WITH ON-FIELD ANALYSIS OF MONUMENTS AND WORK OF ARTS, IF ALLOWDED (SALERNE AND/OR NAPLES)
Verification of learning
ORAL EXAMINATION
THE EVALUATION CRITERIA INCLUDE:
1. KNOWLEDGE OF THE BIBLIOGRAPHY GIVEN IN THE SYLLABUS.
2.KNOWLEDGE OF THE SUBJECTS EXAMINED IN CLASS, AS FOLLOWS:
A.KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOPIC REQUIRED FOR THE EXAM AND ABILITY TO ORGANIZE AN ARTICULATE AND RELEVANT ARGUMENT.
B.ABILITY TO GIVE A CORRECT READING OF THE MEDIEVAL MONUMENTS/WORKS OF ART, IDENTIFYING STYLISTIC, ICONOGRAPHIC AND SYMBOLIC ISSUES, RELATING THEM TO THE MOST APPROPRIATE ARTISTIC, HISTORICAL, CULTURAL AND, WHEN POSSIBLE, LITURGICAL CONTEXT.
C. ABILITY TO RELATE MEDIEVAL MONUMENTS/WORKS OF ART TO A BROADER HISTORICAL-ARTISTIC FRAMEWORK BY MAKING RELEVANT ARTISTIC COMPARISONS, EVALUATING THE SUBJECTS WITHIN THE ITALIAN AND/OR EUROPEAN PANORAMA, THROUGH AND AUTONOMOUS ANALISYS ON THE SUBJECT OF STUDY.
D. ABILITY TO EXPRESS CLEARLY USING CORRECT AND APPROPRIATE SCIENTIFIC LANGUAGE.

KNOWLEDGE OF THE BIBLIOGRAPHY IN THE EXAMINATION PROGRAMME (POINT 1) AND KNOWLEDGE OF THE SUBJECTS OF THE COURSE (POINT 2, WITH POINTS A, B, C, D) WILL RESPECTIVELY ACCOUNT FOR 50% OF THE OVERALL GRADE.
THE FINAL MARK, EXPRESSED IN 30/30 WITH POSSIBLE HONOURS, WILL DEPEND ON THE KNOWLEDGE DEMONSTRATED DURING THE ORAL EXAMINATION AND THE OVERALL MATURITY ACQUIRED IN THE COURSE CONTENT.
THE STUDENT WILL REACH THE LEVEL OF EXCELLENCE (HONOURS) IF HE/SHE PROVES ABLE TO FACE A REFLECTION IN FULL AUTONOMY, WITH TRANSVERSAL REASONING, PROVIDING COMPARISONS NOT EXPRESSLY DEALT WITH IN CLASS, HAVING CONDUCTED AUTONOMOUS IN-SITU ANALISYS FOR THE STUDY OF MONUMENTS AND WORKS OF ART, AND HAVING STUDIED IN DEPTH SELECTED TOPICS THROUGH SPECIFIC SCIENTIFIC BIBLIOGRAPHIES.
