Objectives
THE COURSE IN HISTORY OF ART IN EUROPE AND THE MEDITERRANEAN COUNTRIES IN THE MEDIEVAL AND MODERN AGES IS DIVIDED INTO TWO MODULES FOCUSING ON SSSD. L/ART 01, L/ART 02. AIMED AT DOCTORAL STUDENTS IN THE HISTORY OF ART AND LANGUAGES OF THE IMAGE CURRICULUM, THE COURSE AIMS TO OFFER A METHODOLOGICAL UPDATE ON THE STUDY OF OBJECTS AND CONTEXTS IN THE HISTORY OF ART IN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES AND THE MEDITERRANEAN AREA FROM THE MIDDLE AGES TO THE MODERN AGE, HIGHLIGHTING THE DIFFERENT TRANSITS AND CONTACTS THAT HAVE CHARACTERISED THEIR TRANSFORMATIONS. PARTICULAR ATTENTION WILL BE GIVEN TO THE DYNAMICS OF THE CIRCULATION OF IMAGES AND THE ROLE OF COLLECTING AND PATRONAGE.

THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO MASTER THE NECESSARY TECHNICAL VOCABULARY, NOTIONS AND CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE.

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
THROUGH THE COURSE, THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO APPLY A CORRECT METHODOLOGY OF CRITICAL ANALYSIS; HE/SHE WILL BE ABLE TO PLACE ART-HISTORICAL TOPICS IN THEIR CULTURAL CONTEXT; HE/SHE WILL BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND THE LINKS WITH THE ARTISTIC HERITAGE

AUTONOMY OF JUDGEMENT:
THE STUDENT WILL DEVELOP CONCEPTUAL TOOLS AND CRITICAL SKILLS USEFUL FOR AUTONOMOUSLY EVALUATING METHODOLOGICAL-HISTORICAL ISSUES, SOURCES, MATERIALS AND LANGUAGES OF THE HISTORICAL-ARTISTIC DISCIPLINES.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE HIS KNOWLEDGE AT DIFFERENT LEVELS (BOTH TO AN AUDIENCE OF EXPERTS AND TO ONE OF NON-SPECIALISTS), EXPRESSING IT WITH PROPERTIES OF LANGUAGE AND WITH THE SPECIFIC LEXICAL SKILLS, AND USING THE REGISTER MOST APPROPRIATE TO EACH CIRCUMSTANCE.

LEARNING SKILLS:
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND AND INTERPRET COMPLEX TEXTS AND USE BIBLIOGRAPHICAL TOOLS, BOTH TRADITIONAL AND COMPUTERISED, TO IDENTIFY AND SELECT SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE USEFUL FOR ENHANCING HIS/HER KNOWLEDGE

"GEOGRAPHIES OF OTHERNESS IN MEDIEVAL AND MODERN ART"

THIS COURSE EXPLORES THE CONCEPT OF "OTHERNESS" THROUGH MEDIEVAL AND MODERN ART, ANALYZING HOW DIFFERENT CULTURES, ETHNICITIES, AND IDENTITIES HAVE BEEN REPRESENTED AND PERCEIVED THROUGHOUT HISTORY. STUDENTS WILL EXAMINE ARTWORKS, MANUSCRIPTS, ARCHITECTURE, AND OTHER VISUAL FORMS TO UNDERSTAND HOW OTHERNESS HAS BEEN CONSTRUCTED, EXOTICIZED, OR DEMONIZED. THE COURSE WILL FOCUS ON THEMES SUCH AS ORIENTALISM, THE ENCOUNTER BETWEEN DIFFERENT CULTURES, AND THE INFLUENCE OF COLONIALISM. THROUGH LECTURES, DISCUSSIONS, AND PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES FOR RESEARCH PROJECTS, PARTICIPANTS WILL GAIN A CRITICAL UNDERSTANDING OF THE ROLE OF ART IN SHAPING CULTURAL IDENTITIES AND POWER DYNAMICS.

DURING THE EXAMINATION, THE ACQUISITION OF SPECIFIC SKILLS, THE LEVEL OF HISTORICAL, METHODOLOGICAL AND CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE AND THE MASTERY OF THE TECHNICAL LANGUAGE OF THE SUBJECT ACQUIRED BY READING THE BIBLIOGRAPHICAL REFERENCE TEXTS WILL BE VERIFIED THROUGH AN ORAL TEST.
