Objectives
AIM OF THE COURSE IS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH A SOLID KNOWLEDGE OF THE GRAMMATICAL STRUCTURES AND VARIETIES OF THE ITALIAN LANGUAGE.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE STUDENT:
- WILL ACQUIRE THE BASIS OF ITALIAN LINGUISTICS;
- WILL BECOME FAMILIAR WITH THE MAIN VARIETIES AND GRAMMATICAL STRUCTURES OF ITALIAN, IN ITS DIACHRONIC, SYNCHRONIC, GEO-LINGUISTIC AND SOCIOLINGUISTIC ASPECTS;
- WILL REINFORCE THE COMPETENCE OF THE ITALIAN LANGUAGE, WRITTEN AND SPOKEN, AT A COMMUNICATIVE, LINGUISTIC AND METALINGUISTIC LEVEL.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- RECOGNIZE THE LINGUISTIC STRUCTURES IN WRITTEN AND SPOKEN ITALIAN TEXTS;
- RECOGNIZE VARIETIES AND REGISTERS OF CONTEMPORARY ITALIAN, AND USE THEM IN APPROPRIATE CONTEXTS;
- USE THE APPROPRIATE SCIENTIFIC TERMINOLOGY.

MAKING JUDGEMENTS
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO CRITICALLY EXAMINE VARIOUS TEXTS AND DATA.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO CLEARLY AND CORRECTLY PRESENT THE CONTENTS OF THE COURSE.

LEARNING SKILLS
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- DEVELOP CRITICAL THINKING;
- SHARE INFORMATION, HYPOTHESES, LINGUISTIC PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS ON ITALIAN DATA;
- USE TRADITIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHIC TOOLS AND DIGITAL RESOURCES.
Prerequisites
GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF ORAL AND WRITTEN ITALIAN; BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF LINGUISTICS.

THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE A PROFILE OF CONTEMPORARY ITALIAN AND OF THE SOCIOLINGUISTIC SITUATION OF TODAY’S ITALY, WITH THE ESSENTIAL OUTLINES OF THE HISTORY OF THE ITALIAN LANGUAGE.
THE FOLLOWING TOPICS WILL BE DEALT WITH:
- THE CONCEPTS OF STANDARD ITALIAN AND LINGUISTIC NORM (6 H)
- THE HISTORY OF THE ITALIAN LANGUAGE (16 H)
- THE TYPICAL ELEMENTS OF TODAY’S SPOKEN ITALIAN FROM PHONETIC, MORPHOLOGICAL AND SYNTACTIC POINTS OF VIEW (16 H)
- THE ITALIAN LEXICON (4 H)
-ITALIAN DIALECTS AND REGIONAL VARIETIES OF ITALIAN (6 H)
- WRITTEN, SPOKEN AND TRANSMITTED VARIETIES OF ITALIAN (4 H)
- VARIETIES LINKED TO LINGUISTIC CODES AND REGISTERS (4 H)
- SOCIAL VARIETIES (4 H).

Verification of learning
THE EXAM, ORAL OR WRITTEN, AIMS AT VERIFYING STUDENTS ABILITY TO DISCUSS TOPICS COVERED IN CLASS, EXPRESSING THEMSELVES CLEARLY. IT WILL ALSO VERIFY THEIR ABILITY TO PICK OUT THE MOST IMPORTANT TRAITS OF WRITTEN AND ORAL TEXTS.
