Objectives
AIM OF THE COURSE IS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH A BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF THE CONTEMPORARY ITALO-ROMANCE DIALECTS, BOTH DIACHRONICALLY AND SYNCHRONICALLY, AS FAR AS THE INTERNAL STRUCTURES AND THE SOCIO-LINGUISTIC USES AND CONTEXTS ARE CONCERNED.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE STUDENT:
- WILL ACQUIRE THE MAIN PRINCIPLES OF SOCIO-LINGUISTICS;
- WILL LEARN THE MOST IMPORTANT CLASSIFICATIONS OF THE ITALO-ROMANCE LINGUISTIC AREA AND OF ITS VARIETIES;
- WILL LEARN THE MAIN PHONOLOGICAL, MORPHOLOGICAL AND SYNTACTIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ITALO-ROMANCE DIALECTS;
- WILL LEARN THE METHODOLOGY OF FIELD RESEARCH, DATA GATHERING AND THE PRESENTATION AND USE OF FIELD DATA IN DIALECTOLOGICAL STUDIES.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- USE THE APPROPRIATE SCIENTIFIC TERMINOLOGY;
- RECOGNIZE THE MAIN PHONOLOGICAL, MORPHOLOGICAL AND SYNTACTIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ITALO-ROMANCE DIALECTS IN WRITTEN AND SPOKEN TEXTS;
- TRANSCRIBE AND ANALYSE SPOKEN DIALECTAL TEXTS;
- USE THE METHODOLOGIES OF DIALECTOLOGICAL RESEARCH.

MAKING JUDGEMENTS
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- CRITICALLY EXAMINE TEXTS WRITTEN OR SPOKEN IN DIFFERENT LINGUISTIC VARIETIES;
- MAKE INDEPENDENT JUDGEMENTS ON PROBLEMS RELATING TO LINGUISTIC VARIETIES AND THEIR THEORETICAL STUDY.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO CLEARLY AND CORRECTLY PRESENT THE CONTENTS OF THE COURSE.

LEARNING SKILLS
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- DEVELOP CRITICAL THINKING;
- SHARE INFORMATION, HYPOTHESES, LINGUISTIC PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS ON LINGUISTIC AND EXTRALINGUISTIC DATA RELATING TO DIALECTS;
- USE TRADITIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHIC TOOLS AND DIGITAL RESOURCES.
Prerequisites
GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF ORAL AND WRITTEN ITALIAN; BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF ITALIAN LINGUISTICS.

GENERAL PRINCIPLES OF SOCIO-LINGUISTICS AND GEOLINGUISTICS, SUCH AS LANGUAGE, DIALECT, LINGUISTIC VARIETY, REPERTOIRE, CONTINUUM, LINGUISTIC AREA AND ISOGLOSS; CLASSIFICATION AND INTERNAL DESCRIPTION OF THE MAIN ITALO-ROMANCE DIALECTAL TYPES; METHODS, TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES OF DIALECTOLOGICAL RESEARCH, WITH APPLICATION TO THE DIALECTS OF CAMPANIA; THE PRESENCE OF DIALECTS, ESPECIALLY NEAPOLITAN, IN ITALIAN LITERATURE.

Verification of learning
THE ORAL EXAM AIMS AT VERIFYING STUDENTS ABILITY TO DISCUSS TOPICS COVERED IN CLASS, EXPRESSING THEMSELVES CLEARLY. IT WILL ALSO VERIFY THEIR ABILITY TO PICK OUT THE MOST IMPORTANT TRAITS OF WRITTEN AND ORAL TEXTS.
