THE COURSE MAIN AIM IS TO PROVIDE AN ADEQUATE BASIC ECONOMIC KNOWLEDGE IN THE FIELD OF INTERNATIONAL TRADE, FACTORS MOBILITY, TRADE POLICIES AND THE INTERNATIONAL PERFORMANCE OF ITALY. AT THE END OF THE COURSE STUDENTS WILL ACQUIRE: (I) KNOWLEDGE OF THE MAIN INTERNATIONAL TRADE MODELS AND POLICIES; (II) ABILITY TO APPLY THE MODELS TO UNDERSTAND THE MAIN TRENDS OF INTERNATIONAL TRADE; (III) CAPACITY TO ASSESS INDEPENDENTLY THE EFFECTS OF DIFFERENT TRADE POLICIES; (IV) ABILITY TO ORGANIZE, IN WRITTEN AND ORAL FORMS, A BASIC REPORT ON INTERNATIONAL TRADE ; (V) CAPACITY TO LEARN MORE ADVANCED TECHNIQUES TO ANALYSE INTERNATIONAL TRADE. |

THE COURSE IS DIVIDED IN TWO PARTS. THE FIRST ONE ON THE INTERNATIONAL TRADE ANALYSIS, THE SECOND ONE ON TRADE POLICIES. IN THE SEMINARS THESE TOOLS ARE USED TO EXAMINE SEVERAL ASPECTS OF ITALY’S INTERNATIONAL TRADE. PART 1 1.THE ECONOMICS OF GLOBALISATION: (1.1 ) INTRODUCTION TO INTERNATIONAL ECONOMICS; (1.2 ) THE GLOBALISATION: STYLISED FACTS AND OPEN PROBLEMS; 2.THE ECONOMICS OF INTERNATIONAL TRADE: (2.1 ) THE BENEFITS OF FREE TRADE AND THE THEORY OF COMPARATIVE COSTS; (2.2) RESOURCES’ AVAILABILITY AND DISTRIBUTION; (2.3 ) INTERNATIONAL OUTSOURCING: THE SPATIAL SEPARATION OF THE PRODUCTION PROCESS; 3.THE INTERNATIONAL MOBILITY OF FACTORS: (3.1 ) INTERNATIONAL MOBILITY OF LABOUR: THE INTERNATIONAL MIGRATIONS; (3.2 ) INTERNATIONAL MOBILITY OF CAPITAL: THE FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENTS. PART 2 4.TRADE POLICIES AND INTEGRATION PROCESSES: (4.1 ) TRADE POLICIES: OBJECTIVES AND INSTRUMENTS OF TRADE POLICY; (4.2 ) THE POLITICAL ECONOMY OF TRADE POLICY: TRADE POLICIES IN ACTION AND REGIONALISM. 5.ITALY AND EU TRADE . |

THE CRITERIA FOR ASSESSING LEARNING CONCERN: KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOPICS COVERED IN THE COURSE, MASTERY OF LOGICAL AND ANALYTICAL TOOLS AND THE ABILITY TO APPLY THEM, CLARITY OF EXPOSITION, INCLUDING VOCABULARY. THE ASSESSMENT OF LEARNING IS BASED ON A WRITTEN AND AN ORAL EXAM. THE WRITTEN TEST IS PREPARATORY TO THE ORAL TEST. BOTH TESTS ARE MARKED IN THIRTIETHS AND ARE PASSED WITH A MINIMUM MARK OF 18/30. THE FINAL ASSESSMENT, ALSO IN THIRTIETHS, WILL CORRESPOND TO THE AVERAGE OF THE MARKS OBTAINED IN THE TWO TESTS. FINAL EXAM: (I) WRITTEN TEST: MULTIPLE CHOICE AND EXERCISES TO VERIFY THEORETICAL KNOLWLEDGE AND APPLICATION ABILITY (60 MIN.), (II) ORAL EXAM TO VERIFY THE ABILITY TO ARGUE ON TO THE MAIN ISSUES OF INTERNATIONAL TRADE. THE WRITTEN TEST VERIFIES THE ACQUISITION OF METHODOLOGICAL AND THEORETICAL TOOLS OF THE DISCIPLINE AND THE ABILITY TO USE THEM. IT LASTS 90 MINUTES AND IS DIVIDED INTO TWO PARTS: (A) FIVE MULTIPLE-CHOICE QUESTIONS, IN WHICH THE STUDENT IS ALSO ASKED TO BRIEFLY JUSTIFY HIS OR HER ANSWER, POSSIBLY WITH THE AID OF GRAPHS, (B) TWO EXERCISES, INCLUDING NUMERICAL EXERCISES (A CHOICE OF THREE). QUESTIONS WILL BE SIMILAR TO THOSE DISCUSSED IN THE TUTORIALS OR PUBLISHED ON THE COURSE DESK PAGE. THE ORAL EXAM ASSESSES THE STUDENT'S LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY TO ARGUE ON THE TOPICS COVERED IN THE COURSE. LASTING APPROXIMATELY 15 MINUTES, IT CONSISTS OF AN INTERVIEW IN WHICH THE STUDENT IS ASKED TO PRESENT AND DISCUSS COURSE TOPICS. |
