Objectives
GENERAL OBJECTIVE
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE KNOWLEDGE AND PROMOTE THEORETICAL UNDERSTANDING SKILLS REGARDING THE APPLICATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF CHEMICAL ANALYSIS METHODS APPLIED TO VARIOUS MATRICES.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING SKILLS
THE STUDENT:
-WILL BE TRAINED IN THE FUNDAMENTALS OF ADVANCED ELECTROANALYTICAL, SPECTROANALYTICAL, AND SEPARATION TECHNIQUES, AS WELL AS SOPHISTICATED ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES.
-WILL BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND ANALYTICAL PROTOCOLS AND EVALUATE ANY MODIFICATIONS TO BE MADE BASED ON THE SPECIFIC ANALYTICAL PROBLEM.
APPLICATION KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING SKILLS
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
-CARRY OUT SAMPLINGS ACCORDING TO OFFICIAL PROTOCOLS, AND IF NECESSARY, MODIFY THEM BASED ON SPECIFIC CONDITIONS.
-PERFORM TRANSPORTATION, PRESERVATION, AND PRETREATMENT OPERATIONS ON SAMPLES TO BE ANALYZED.
-CONDUCT CHEMICAL ANALYSES ON FOOD, ENVIRONMENTAL, MERCHANDISE, INDUSTRIAL SAMPLES, USING CLASSICAL AND INSTRUMENTAL ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES, INCLUDING SOPHISTICATED ONES.
-EXAMINE ANALYSIS RESULTS AND PROCESS THEM TO EXPRESS THE DETERMINATION RESULT WITH THE ASSOCIATED STATISTICAL UNCERTAINTY.
DEVELOP AND VALIDATE NEW ANALYTICAL PROTOCOLS.
AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
-CRITICALLY EVALUATE THE RESULTS OF THE DETERMINATIONS PERFORMED.
DISCERN AMONG MULTIPLE ALTERNATIVES THE ONE MOST SUITABLE FOR RESOLVING THE SPECIFIC ANALYTICAL PROBLEM.
-SELECT THE OPTIMAL EXPERIMENTAL CONDITIONS FOR CONDUCTING PARTICULAR DETERMINATIONS.

-COMMUNICATE IN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE.

THE COURSE INCLUDES THE PRESENTATION OF ADVANCED ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES AND THEIR APPLICATIONS IN THE FIELD OF PURE RESEARCH AND APPLIED ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY.
THE TOPICS COVERED WILL BE:
-ELECTROANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES: VOLTAMMETRY, ELECTROGRAVIMETRY, COULOMBOMETRY, AMPEROMETRY, ELECTROPHORESIS. (4 HOURS)
-SPECTROANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES (SPECTROFLUORIMETRY, ATOMIC EMISSION SPECTROSCOPY, ICP-MS). (4 HOURS)
-CHROMATOGRAPHY AND MASS SPECTROMETRY TECHNIQUES (COUPLED TECHNIQUES): GC-MS, LC-MS, IC-MS, MULTIDIMENSIONAL CHROMATOGRAPHY, SUPERCRITICAL PHASE CHROMATOGRAPHY, SIZE EXCLUSION CHROMATOGRAPHY, HIGH-RESOLUTION MASS SPECTROMETRY, ISOTOPE MASS SPECTROSCOPY. (16 HOURS)
-ELEMENTARY ANALYSIS. RADIOCHEMICAL METHODS OF ANALYSIS. (2 HOURS)
-SENSORS. ION-SELECTIVE ELECTRODES. BIOSENSORS. (2 HOURS)
- EQUILIBRIUM AND SPECIATION ANALYSIS. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS FOR THE DETERMINATION OF EQUILIBRIUM CONSTANTS. (2 HOURS)
-SAMPLING PRINCIPLES AND TECHNIQUES. METHODS OF PRE-TREATMENT OF SAMPLES. (4 HOURS)
-DEVELOPMENT OF THE ANALYTICAL METHOD. METHODS AND FIGURES OF MERIT FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN ANALYTICAL PROTOCOL: SELECTIVITY, ROBUSTNESS, PERCENTAGE RECOVERY, METHOD VALIDATION. (6 HOURS)
-CHEMIOMETRY. (4 HOURS)
-METHODS OF CHEMICAL-CLINICAL AND TOXICOLOGICAL ANALYSIS, OF PHARMACEUTICAL PRODUCTS, OF ENVIRONMENTAL SAMPLES, OF FOODSTUFFS, OF MATERIALS. (4 HOURS)
-LABORATORY EXPERIENCES: DEVELOPMENT AND VALIDATION OF ANALYTICAL PROTOCOLS ON MATRICES OF INTEREST. (12 HOURS)
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE CONSISTS OF 60 TEACHING HOURS DIVIDED BETWEEN LECTURES, CLASSROOM AND LABORATORY EXERCISES AS FOLLOWS:
-LECTURES IN THE CLASSROOM (3 CFU, 24 HOURS).
-CLASSROOM EXERCISES (2 CFU, 24 HOURS).
-LABORATORY EXERCISES (1 CFU, 12 HOURS).
ATTENDANCE AT EX CATHEDRA LECTURES AND CLASSROOM EXERCISES IS NOT COMPULSORY BUT STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.
ATTENDANCE AT THE LABORATORY EXERCISES IS COMPULSORY. IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO SIT THE FINAL EXAMINATION, THE STUDENT MUST HAVE ATTENDED AT LEAST 75% OF THE SCHEDULED HOURS IN THE LABORATORY. ATTENDANCE IS ASCERTAINED BY MEANS OF A ROLL CALL BY THE TEACHER.
Verification of learning
THE EXAMINATION CONSISTS OF AN ORAL TEST AT THE END OF THE COURSE, AIMED AT ASCERTAINING THE STUDENT'S LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE AND ASSESSING THE DEGREE OF LEARNING THE THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL NOTIONS OF THE COURSE, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE TRAINING OBJECTIVES ELUCIDATED IN THE DEDICATED SECTION.
THE ORAL TEST, WITH A MARK IN THIRTIETHS, CONSISTS OF AN INTERVIEW WITH QUESTIONS AND DISCUSSION ON THE THEORETICAL CONTENT OF THE COURSE AND LABORATORY EXERCISES.
THE MARK FOR THE ORAL TEST WILL DEPEND ON THE DEGREE OF IN-DEPTH STUDY OF THE COURSE CONTENTS, THE STUDENT'S ABILITY TO EFFECTIVELY PRESENT THE TOPICS ELUCIDATED IN THE CONTENTS SECTION IN RIGOROUS SCIENTIFIC LANGUAGE, AND THE MATURITY EXPRESSED BY THE STUDENT IN CRITICALLY DISCUSSING THE TOPICS ILLUSTRATED.
THE MINIMUM MARK (18/30) IS AWARDED TO STUDENTS WHO DEMONSTRATE SUPERFICIAL KNOWLEDGE AND LIMITED UNDERSTANDING OF THE THEORETICAL CONTENT.
THE STUDENT ACHIEVES THE LEVEL OF EXCELLENCE IF HE/SHE PROVES CAPABLE OF TACKLING UNUSUAL PROBLEMS (OR THOSE NOT EXPRESSLY DEALT WITH IN THE LECTURE) AMONG THOSE PROPOSED AT THE ORAL TEST.
