Objectives
THE COURSE IS CONCEIVED AS A RESEARCH SEMINAR ENHANCING PREVIOUSLY ACQUIRED SKILLS. IT IS DESIGNED TO FURTHER DEVELOP THE STUDENTS’ KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF FRENCH LITERATURE, OFFERING AN INITIATION TO RESEARCH ON A SPECIFIC THEME OR CHRONOLOGY

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
-BE AWARE OF THE MAIN CRITICAL POSITIONS REGARDING THE THEMES OF THE COURSE
-UNDERSTAND FRENCH LITERARY HISTORY
-LEARN IN DEPTH THE MAIN AESTHETIC-LITERARY MOVEMENTS OF FRENCH MODERNITY
-LEARN THE METHODOLOGIES TO ANALYSE LITERARY TEXTS, ALSO THROUGH THE STUDY OF THE CRITICAL DEBATE IN THE LITERARY AND CULTURAL FIELD

-CARRY OUT RESEARCH ON LITERARY THEMES

Prerequisites
THIS IS AN ADVANCED CLASS. STUDENTS MUST HAVE PASSED THE FOLLOWING EXAMS: FRENCH LITERATURE 1, 2, 3; AND FRENCH LANGUAGE 1, 2, 3.
Contents
THE AIMS TO FAMILIARIZE STUDENTS WITH VOLTAIRE'S IDEAS AND HIS IMPACT ON BOTH CONTEMPORARY AND SUBSEQUENT FRENCH LITERATURE. THROUGH A CRITICAL EXAMINATION OF VOLTAIRE'S WORKS AND PHILOSOPHY, THE COURSE SEEKS TO DELVE INTO HIS SIGNIFICANCE WITHIN THE CULTURAL AND INTELLECTUAL MILIEU OF HIS TIME, WHILE ALSO CONSIDERING THE LITERARY GENRES HE ENGAGED WITH AND INFLUENCED.

THE COURSE IS STRUCTURED INTO TWO PARTS. THE FIRST PART, SERVING AS AN INTRODUCTION, WILL EXPLORE THE MAJOR THEMES OF AESTHETIC, ETHICAL, AND LITERARY REFLECTION DURING THE ENLIGHTENMENT ERA, IN CONNECTION WITH THE VARIOUS LITERARY GENRES EMPLOYED BY AUTHORS OF THE PERIOD. THE SECOND PART WILL DELVE INTO THE THEMES AND FORMS FOUND IN VOLTAIRE'S WORK, WITH SPECIAL EMPHASIS ON HIS CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE EVOLUTION OF EUROPEAN THOUGHT AND LITERARY GENRES.

ALPHABETICAL AND DIALOGICAL WORKS: 10 HOURS
VOLTAIRE AND THEATRE: 10 HOURS
VOLTAIRE AS A POET: 5 HOURS
Teaching Methods
TEACHER-LED CLASSES (45 HOURS IN FRENCH). ACTIVE LECTURE, INTERACTIVE LESSONS, COLLABORATIVE AND COOPERATIVE TASKS. STUDENTS ARE WARMLY INVITED TO ATTEND REGULARLY.
Verification of learning
FINAL ORAL TESTING IN FRENCH. ALL THE STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED FLUENCY IN THE EXPOSITION OF SPECIFIC CONCEPTS, ABILITY OF ORGANIZING A COMPLEX SPEECH ABOUT PROBLEMS, AUTHORS AND WORKS DISCUSSED IN THE COURSE AND USE DIFFERENT CRITICAL APPROACHES. THE KNOWLEDGE OF CRITICAL WORKS/ESSAYS LISTED IN THE PROGRAMME IS ALSO NEEDED.
THE EVALUATION WILL TAKE INTO ACCOUNT :
- THE QUALITY OF PRESENTATION, CORRECT USE OF APPROPRIATE SCIENTIFIC LANGUAGE
- THE QUALITY AND QUANTITY OF INFORMATION
- THE ABILITY TO CREATE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN DIFFERENT TOPICS BOTH IN AND OUTSIDE OF THE PROGRAMME
- INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT
STUDENTS ACHIEVE THE MAXIMUM MARK IF THEY ARE ABLE TO DEAL WITH ORIGINAL (OR NOT EXPRESSLY DEALT WITH IN CLASS) TOPICS AND TO PRESENT THEIR CONSIDERATIONS USING EXAMPLES TAKEN FROM WORKS EVEN IF THEY ARE NOT EXPRESSLY INCLUDED IN THE PROGRAMME.
THERE ARE TWO OPTIONAL PARTIAL EXAMS: A MIDTERM TEXT FOCUSING ON LITERARY HISTORY, AND A ORAL TESTING TOWARDS THE END OF THE COURSE, FOCUSING ON TEXT ANALYSIS.
STUDENTS WHO SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE BOTH PARTIAL EXAMS DO NOT NEED TO TAKE THE ORAL FINAL. THE PARTIAL AND FINAL EXAMS ARE IN FRENCH.
