Objectives
OBJECTIVES
THE LECTURES AIM TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH THE FUNDAMENTALS FOR UNDERSTANDING THE PHYSICAL PROCESSES TAKING PLACE IN THE ATMOSPHERE DUE TO THE INTERACTIONS BETWEEN THE ATMOSPHERE, LAND, AND SOLAR RADIATION.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
RADIATION-MATTER INTERACTIONS IN THE ATMOSPHERE AND MEASUREMENTS.

ABILITY TO APPLY THE CONTENT KNOWLEDGE.
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND THE MECHANISMS REGULATED BY RADIATIVE TRANSFER AND TO APPROACH OBSERVATIONAL DATASETS FOR THE STUDY OF ATMOSPHERIC CHEMISTRY AND PHYSICS FROM SATELLITE OR GROUND-BASED MEASUREMENT PLATFORMS.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS: THE LECTURES WILL PROMOTE THE STUDENTS' SKILLS IN EXPLAINING THE DISCUSSED TOPICS IN A CLEAR AND RIGOROUS WAY.

INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT: STUDENTS ARE GUIDED TO DISCUSS WITH CRITICISM THE RESULTS OF THE ANALYSIS OF OBSERVATIONAL DATA.
Prerequisites
NO PREREQUISITES
Contents
THE COURSE AIMS TO INTRODUCE THE BASIC CONCEPTUAL FOUNDATIONS FOR UNDERSTANDING ATMOSPHERIC PHENOMENA, PARTICULARLY RADIATIVE TRANSFER. THE MATHEMATICAL FOUNDATIONS FOR STUDYING THE INTERACTION BETWEEN SOLAR RADIATION AND THE ATMOSPHERE WILL BE COVERED, INCLUDING THE RADIATIVE TRANSFER EQUATION. ADDITIONALLY, THE MAIN TECHNIQUES FOR OBSERVING THE EARTH'S ATMOSPHERE AND THE RELATED ALGORITHMS USED TO CHARACTERIZE ITS CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES WILL BE INTRODUCED. THE TECHNIQUES COVERED INCLUDE BOTH ACTIVE METHODS, BASED ON A LASER OR MICROWAVE RADIATION SOURCE (LIDAR AND RADAR), AND PASSIVE METHODS (RADIOMETERS), BASED ON THE INTERACTION BETWEEN SOLAR RADIATION AND THE ATMOSPHERE.
Teaching Methods
THE TEACHING INCLUDES LECTURES WITH A TOTAL DURATION OF 10 HOURS, DURING WHICH PRACTICAL EXERCISES WILL BE CONDUCTED.
Verification of learning
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF COURSE OBJECTIVES IS CERTIFIED BY AN EXAM CONSISTING OF ANALYZING A SET OF REMOTE SENSING DATA, WITH DISCUSSION. OF THE RESULTS OBTAINED WITHIN A BRIEF REPORT.
