Objectives
SPECIFIC LEARNING OBJECTIVES

THE COURSE FOCUSES ON THE ANALYSIS OF A THEME – THE DIGITAL CULTURE – WHICH ANIMATES THE MOST RECENT DEBATE IN THE DEMO-ETHNO-ANTHROPOLOGICAL DISCIPLINES, STARTING WITH THE CRUCIAL CHANGES THAT HAVE INFLUENCED THE THEORY AND INEVITABLY THE METHODOLOGY OF ETHNOGRAPHIC RESEARCH SINCE THE 1980S. THE PREDOMINANT POSITION THAT DIGITAL MEDIA HAVE ACQUIRED IN THE SOCIAL AND COGNITIVE LIFE OF INDIVIDUALS AND GROUPS CHANGING THE THINKING, RELATING AND ACTING OF THE INTERLOCUTORS OF ETHNOGRAPHIC RESEARCH AND A NEW LOOK AND A NEW METHODS NEEDED TO OBSERVE THESE CHANGES.
THE AIM OF THE COURSE IS TO PROVIDE AND MAKE STUDENTS EXPERIENCE THE THEORETICAL AND ABOVE ALL METHODOLOGICAL TOOLS USEFUL FOR INTERPRETING THE CULTURAL DYNAMICS INSERTED IN THE COMPLEX CONTEMPORARY VISUAL SCENARIOS AND DEALING WITH DIFFERENT NEW WAYS OF CONCEIVE THE FIELDWORK AND THE POSTURE OF THE ANTHROPOLOGIST AND DEALING WITH THE LIMITS AND OPPORTUNITIES THAT THE MOST RECENT FIELDS OFFER (VIRTUAL ETHNOGRAPHY, DIGITAL ETHNOGRAPHY, NETWORK ETHNOGRAPHY, CYBERANTHROPOLOGY, NETNOGRAPHY, VISUAL ETHNOGRAPHY, ETC).

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

SOME OF THE MAIN THEORETICAL CONCEPTS OF THE COURSE ARE: "MULTI-SITUATED ETHNOGRAPHY" AND "COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE", WHICH ALLOW TO ANALYZE THE CRITICAL DIMENSIONS OF ACTIONS, EMOTIONS AND IDENTITY REPRESENTATIONS OF INDIVIDUALS AND GROUPS, OVERCOMING THE ONLY LOCAL TERRITORIAL REGISTRATION AND INVESTIGATING THE CHANGES IN THE BROADER DIMENSIONS, NATIONAL AND SUPRANATIONAL, THANKS TO THE ADVANTAGES BUT ALSO TO THE DANGERS OFFERED BY THE GLOBALIZED WORLD AND ITS CONNECTING TOOLS. IN THIS SENSE, THE DIGITAL SPACES BECOME ONE OF THE NEW FIELDS OF ANTHROPOLOGICAL RESEARCH, WITHOUT REPLACING THE CLASSIC FIELD RESEARCH, BECAUSE THEY REPRESENT THE NEW ARENAS OF MANIFESTATION OF BELONGING AND CONFLICT, WHERE THERE ARE BOTH RISKS AND INEQUALITIES AS WELL AS NEW SPACES FOR SUBJECTIVITY AND CONSTRUCTION OF BELONGING. FOR THE ANTHROPOLOGY, CRITICALLY INVESTIGATING THEM MEANS FOLLOWING IN AN ETHNOGRAPHIC SENSE THE EVER-RENEWED FLOWS OF MEANING THAT INDIVIDUALS ATTRIBUTE TO THEIR ACTIONS IN THE CONTEMPORARY WORLD.

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

THE COURSE HAS AN EMPIRICAL VOCATION AND IS STRUCTURED STARTING FROM THE ANALYSIS OF SIGNIFICANT RESEARCH CASES THAT SHOW HOW THE FIELDS OF RESEARCH CAN ONLY BE CONSIDERED TODAY IN A MULTI-SITUATED SENSE AND, AS SUCH, MUST BE INVESTIGATED STARTING FROM ONE ANTHROPOLOGICAL GAZE THAT CONSIDER THE VIRTUAL WORLD, THE DIGITAL SPACES, THE CONNECTIONS, THE NETWORKS, THE SOCIAL NETWORKS, THE CONTINUOUS CHANGES THAT THE MEDIA AND TECHNOLOGICAL TOOLS IMPOSE AND THE CONSEQUENT DIGITAL CULTURE THAT DERIVES FROM THEM.

TRAINING OBJECTIVE OF TEACHING ETHNOGRAPHY AND DIGITAL SPACES IS TO INTRODUCE THE STUDENT TO SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE OF SOME THEORETICAL PARADIGMS OF DIGITAL ANTHROPOLOGY RELATED TO DIGITAL CULTURE AND SOCIAL NETWORK ANALYSIS.
IT IS INTENDED TO APPROVE THE MOST RECENT DEBATE THAT DECOSTRUCTES THE IDEA THAT INTERNET SHOULD BE INTENDED ONLY IN A VIRTUAL SENSUS - THEN SEPARATE FROM REAL EVERYDAY LIFE - TENDING TOWARD A MORE COMPLEX CONCEPT OF THE DIGITAL WORLD.
FURTHER, IT IS INTENDED TO PROVIDE CRITICAL CAPABILITIES TO INVESTIGATE AND INTERPRET TECHNOLOGICAL DEVICES AS CULTURAL ARTIFACTS, AND DIGITAL PLATFORMS AS SOCIALLY CONSTRUCTED TOOLS, IN A CULTURAL AND LOCAL SENSE.

THE COURSE IS STRUCTURED IN TWO PARTS:

PART ONE: THE PHASES, CONCEPTS, DEBATES AND MAIN AUTHORS THAT HAVE CHARACTERIZED DIGITAL ANTHROPOLOGY ARE ILLUSTRATED.

SECOND PART: THE MAIN CONCEPTS AND THEORIES THAT CHARACTERIZE THE METHODOLOGY OF ETHNOGRAPHIC RESEARCH APPLIED TO THE DIGITAL WORLD WILL BE ADDRESSED. DIFFERENT MODES OF RESEARCH WILL BE COVERED: VIRTUAL ETHNOGRAPHY, DIGITAL ETHNOGRAPHY, NETWORK ETHNOGRAPHY, CYBERANTHROPOLOGY, NETNOGRAPHY, AND QUALITATIVE FORMS OF ANALYSIS SUCH AS WEB CONTENT ANALYSIS AND SOCIAL NETWORK ANALYSIS.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE FOLLOWS TEACHING METHODS OF TRADITIONAL TYPE, ORAL EXPOSURE OF CONTENTS, AND INNOVATIVE TYPE, WITH THE AUSILIO OF ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATORY TOOLS AND VIDEO DOCUMENTS. ALSO INTENDS TO ALSO PROMOTE COMMUNICATION IN THE CLASSROOM SUPPORTING THE RECIPROCITY AND THE PUBLIC INTERVENTION OF THE STUDENTS WITH STRONGLY, IN ORDER TO MAKE THEIR ACTIVE AND INVOLVING ACTION AWARE. FINALLY, THE COURSE INTENDS TO ENHANCE THE LEARNING SKILLS OF STUDENTS BY ACTIVATING THE MOST POSSIBLE CHANNELS OF DIGITAL COMMUNICATION ABLE OF STRENGTHENING THEIR INVOLVEMENT AND ATTENTION LEVEL NECESSARY. IN ADDITION IT PROVIDES THE POSSIBILITY TO CARRY OUT SHORT RESEARCH EXPERIENCES OF DIGITAL FIELDWORK AND VISUAL ETHNOGRAPHY.

THE VERIFICATION OF LEARNING WILL HAVE THROUGH THE ORAL INTERVIEW ON THE CONTENTS OF THE COURSE. THE VOTE, EXPRESSED IN THIRTY MORE EVENTUAL LODE, IS DETERMINED BY THE LEVEL OF PERFORMANCE FOR EACH OF THE FOLLOWING DIMENSIONS OF THE ORAL EXHIBITION: COMMUNICATION SKILLS, CRITICAL DESCRIPTIVE SKILLS OF THE QUESTIONS SUBJECT TO VERIFICATION, DEFINITIONS AND THEORETICAL REFERENCES, MASTERY OF THE CONTENTS. LA LODE IS ATTRIBUTED WHEN THE CANDIDATE DEMONSTRATE SIGNIFICANT MASTERY OF METHODOLOGIES AND INSTRUMENTS AND EXCITES LARGE PROPERTY OF LANGUAGE AND ABILITY OF AUTONOMOUS PROCESSING AND IN CASES OF RESEARCH EXPERIENCES.
