Objectives
GENERAL OBJECTIVES
The course aims to equip students with the ability to critically explore the fundamental events in the history of modern and contemporary architecture by privileging the international component.

Knowledge and understanding
The student will be aware of the main lines of development in the history of modern and contemporary architecture and will achieve an adequate
ability to recognise, describe and evaluate the main architecture of the period taken into consideration.

Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
The student will be able to apply historical methodology and bibliographic and archival research to the analysis of an artefact from the more or less recent past.

Autonomy of judgement
The student will be able to identify the most appropriate methods for analyzing a building and developing connections between architecture of different periods and styles.

Communication skills
The student will be able to argue the topics covered and orally present personal historical research.

Learning ability
The student will be able to apply the knowledge acquired in order to critically analyze any historical artefact. It will also have
acquired the skills to proceed with historical-archival-architectural research, thanks to the knowledge of bibliographic tools and
archive research.
Prerequisites
FOR THE PROFITABLE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE SET OBJECTIVES, KNOWLEDGE OF THE HISTORY OF ARCHITECTURE FROM ANTIQUITY TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE NEOCLASSIC STYLE IS REQUIRED.
PREPARATORY FOR THE TEACHING IS THE TEACHING OF HISTORY OF ARCHITECTURE 1
Contents
THE PROGRAM COVERS A TIME RANGE THAT BEGINS AT THE END OF THE 18TH CENTURY AND ENDS WITH SOME EXAMPLES OF CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE. THE COURSE INTENDS TO ADDRESS TRANSVERSAL ISSUES ANALYZED IN A CHRONOLOGICAL MANNER IN ORDER TO IDENTIFY THE RELATIONSHIPS ENTERED BY THE SO-CALLED MODERN MOVEMENT WITH THE ARCHITECTURE THAT PRECEDED IT. MONOGRAPHIC INSIGHTS WILL ALSO BE PROVIDED DURING THE LESSONS.

IN PARTICULAR THE FOLLOWING TOPICS WILL BE ADDRESSED:
-THE QUESTION OF ORIGINS AND THE DEBATE ON HISTORICAL STYLES (10 HOURS)
-THE USE OF NEW MATERIALS (IRON, REINFORCED CONCRETE...) (10 HOURS)
-THE EUROPEAN CITY BETWEEN THE 19TH AND 20TH CENTURIES (4 HOURS)
-THE AVANT-GARDE AND "MASTERS" OF MODERN ARCHITECTURE (20 HOURS)
-ITALY IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY (6 HOURS)
-LOOK AT CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE (10 HOURS)
- HISTORICAL-CRITICAL-DOCUMENTARY EXERCISE (30 HOURS)
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE INCLUDES LECTURES AND SEMINARS LASTING A TOTAL OF 60 HOURS (6 CFU) AND EXERCISES THAT TAKE PLACE IN
CLASSROOM FOR A TOTAL OF 30 HOURS (3 CFU).
THE THEORETICAL LESSONS LEAD TO A HISTORICAL-CRITICAL READING OF THE DIFFERENT ARCHITECTURAL CURRENTS THAT CHARACTERIZE MODERNITY. IN ADDITION TO THE HISTORICAL METHODOLOGY WE WILL MAKE USE OF STYLISTIC, CONSTRUCTION AND ARCHITECTURAL ANALYSES OF THE ARTIFACTS.
THE CLASSROOM EXERCISES INCLUDE HISTORICAL-ARCHITECTURAL INSIGHTS ON THE TOPICS COVERED IN THE THEORETICAL LESSONS. DURING THE HOURS SCHEDULED FOR CLASSROOM EXERCISES, THE STUDENTS WILL ALSO DEAL WITH A THEME TO DEVELOP DURING THE ENTIRE COURSE: THEME WHICH WILL BE AGREED WITH THE TEACHER AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR. ATTENDANCE OF LESSONS AND CLASSROOM EXERCISES IS MANDATORY. TO BE ABLE TO TAKE THE FINAL EXAM THE STUDENT MUST HAVE ATTENDED AT LEAST 70% OF THE HOURS SCHEDULED FOR THE COURSE. THE ATTENDANCE CHECK METHOD IS GENERALLY ELECTRONIC, OR MADE NOTED BY THE TEACHER AT THE BEGINNING OF THE LESSONS.
Verification of learning
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE TEACHING OBJECTIVES IS CERTIFIED THROUGH AN EXAM WHICH INCLUDES AN ORAL TEST (AT THE END OF THE COURSE). THE ORAL EXAM IS RATED OUT OF THIRTIETH AND IS CONSIDERED PASSED WITH A MINIMUM MARK OF 18/30.
THE ORAL EXAM CONSISTS OF AN INTERVIEW WITH QUESTIONS AND DISCUSSION ON THE THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL CONTENTS INDICATED IN THE COURSE PROGRAM AND IS AIMED AT ASSESSING THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING ABILITY REACHED BY THE STUDENT, AS WELL AS VERIFYING THE ABILITY TO EXPOSE USING THE TERMS APPROPRIATE NOLOGY AND THE ABILITY TO AUTONOMOUSLY ORGANIZE EXPOSURE ON THE SAME TOPICS WITH THEORETICAL CONTENT. THIS INTERVIEW ALSO INCLUDES THE DISCUSSION OF THE WORKS FROM THE YEAR'S EXERCISE.

THE MINIMUM ASSESSMENT LEVEL (18) IS AWARDED WHEN THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATES THAT HE IS ORIENTED, CHRONOLOGICALLY AND STYLISTICLY, ON THE VARIOUS TOPICS AND HAS A KNOWLEDGE LIMITED TO THE BASIC NOTIONS.
THE MAXIMUM ASSESSMENT LEVEL (30) IS AWARDED WHEN THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATES AN IN-DEPTH KNOWLEDGE OF THE CHARACTERISTICS AND SPECIFICITIES OF THE ARCHITECTURAL STYLES, THE MAIN WORKS AND THE AUTHORS TREATED.
PRAISE IS AWARDED WHEN THE CANDIDATE DEMONSTRATES SIGNIFICANT AND COMPLETE MASTERY OF THE CONTENTS AND SHOWS THE ABILITY TO PRESENT THE TOPICS WITH REMARKABLE LANGUAGE PROPERTY AND INDEPENDENT PROCESSING ABILITY EVEN IN CONTEXTS DIFFERENT FROM THOSE PROPOSED BY THE TEACHER.
