Objectives
GENERAL OBJECTIVE - THE OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE IS TO PROVIDE THE STUDENT WITH A SOLID PREPARATION REGARDING THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF THE DIFFERENT CELL CULTURE TECHNIQUES FROM STANDARD TO ADVANCED ONES, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THREE-DIMENSIONAL CULTURE SYSTEMS (E.G. SPHEROIDS AND ORGANOIDS) AND ORGAN-ON-CHIP. FURTHERMORE, SOME OF THE DIFFERENT AREAS OF APPLICATION OF THESE SYSTEMS IN THE BIOMEDICAL, NANOMEDICINE AND NANOTOXICOLOGY FIELDS WILL BE ADDRESSED.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING - THE STUDENT WILL KNOW THE THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL DISCIPLINARY FOUNDATIONS OF CELL CULTURES. IT WILL INCLUDE THE USE OF CELL CULTURES IN VARIOUS APPLICATION AREAS OF SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH.
ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING - THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED WILL PROVIDE THE BASIS FOR POSSIBLE LABORATORY AND PRECLINICAL APPLICATIONS OF COMPLEX CELLULAR SYSTEMS AS IN VITRO SCREENING PLATFORMS.
AUTONOMY OF JUDGEMENT - ABILITY TO ANALYZE AND DISCRIMINATE BETWEEN DIFFERENT OPTIONS. ABILITY TO EVALUATE AND SELECT THE OPTIMAL SOLUTION TO RESPOND TO A SPECIFIC PROBLEM.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS DEVELOP THE ABILITY TO REPRESENT AND COMMUNICATE, THROUGH TEXTS OR VIRTUAL TOOLS, THE RESULTS OF RESEARCH OR OWN ELABORATIONS THROUGH THE USE OF AN APPROPRIATE VOCABULARY.
LEARNING ABILITY - THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO CARRY OUT RESEARCH ON SPECIFIC TOPICS, UNDERSTAND AND INTERPRET SCIENTIFIC TEXTS; PROCEED WITH THE CONTINUOUS UPDATING OF ONE'S KNOWLEDGE, USING TECHNICAL AND SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE, IMPROVING THE ABILITY TO ACQUIRE AND INTERPRET INFORMATION IN AN AUTONOMOUS AND INDEPENDENT MANNER.
Prerequisites
FUNDAMENTAL KNOWLEDGE OF CELL BIOLOGY, TISSUES AND BIOCHEMISTRY
Contents
CELL CULTURES: PRIMARY, STABILIZED, STEM. (LESSON 4H)
LABORATORY EQUIPMENT FOR CELL CULTURES. THE LAMINAR FLOW HOOD, STERILITY, CELL CULTURE MEDIA. CELL COUNTING. (4H LESSON + 6H EXERCISE)
STEM CELLS AND IPSCS. THE ROLE OF MORPHOGENS. APPLICATIONS OF STEM CELLS IN THE LABORATORY. (LECTURE 4H)
STANDARD AND ADVANCED CELL CULTURE TECHNIQUES. THE ROLE OF CELL GROWTH SUPPORT. SCAFFOLD. EPITHELIAL BARRIERS. THREE-DIMENSIONAL STRUCTURES (SPHEROIDS, ORGANOIDS). CELLULAR CULTURES IN 4D: ORGAN-ON -CHIP. (LESSON 6H + 6H EXERCISE)
TISSUE ENGINEERING AND REGENERATIVE MEDICINE. EXAMPLES OF ADVANCED CELL CULTURE APPLICATIONS IN TISSUE ENGINEERING AND REGENERATIVE MEDICINE. (LESSON 4H + 6H EXERCISE)
NOTES OF NANOMEDICINE AND NANOTECHNOLOGIES. NANOMEDICINE. THE NANOMATERIALS. NANOMATERIALS FOR DRUG DELIVERY. TECHNIQUES FOR THE STUDY OF NANO-BIOINTERATIONS. EXAMPLES OF APPLICATIONS OF ADVANCED CELL CULTURE IN NANOMEDICINE AND NANOTOXICOLOGY. (LESSON 4H + 6H EXERCISE)
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE PROVIDES 56 HOURS OF TEACHING DIVIDED INTO 32 HOURS OF THEORY LESSONS, 12 HOURS OF CLASSROOM EXERCISES, AND 12 HOURS OF LABORATORY. DURING THE TEACHING HOURS THEORETICAL TOPICS WILL BE ADDRESSED WITH THE PRESENTATION OF EXERCISES AND PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS IN THE LABORATORY. EXERCISES AND LABORATORY ACTIVITIES ARE THEREFORE AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE PROGRAMMED LESSONS.
Verification of learning
THE FINAL VERIFICATION WILL BE CARRIED OUT THROUGH AN ORAL INTERVIEW
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE COURSE OBJECTIVES WILL BE VERIFIED BY PASSING AN EXAM.
THE EXAM CONSISTS OF AN ORAL EXAMINATION, TO VERIFY THE LEARNING OF THE TOPICS PROPOSED BY THE TEACHER DURING THE COURSE.
THE FINAL MARK WILL BE EXPRESSED IN THIRTY. THE RECORDING OF THE FINAL MARK IS SUBJECT TO PASSING THE EXAM WITH A MARK NOT LESS THAN 18/30. THE MINIMUM MARK (18/30) IS REACHED WHEN THE EXAM DEMONSTRATES THE ACHIEVEMENT OF A SUFFICIENT LEVEL IN KNOWLEDGE, LANGUAGE ABILITY AND QUALITY OF PRESENTATION. THE MAXIMUM MARK (30/30) IS ACHIEVED WHEN THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATES, WITH THE EXAM, FULL AND COMPLETE KNOWLEDGE AND OWNERSHIP OF LANGUAGE ON THE TOPICS ADDRESSED, WITH MAXIMUM QUALITY OF PRESENTATION AND ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE IN PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES. HONORS ARE AWARDED WHEN THE EXAM DEMONSTRATES, IN ADDITION TO THE HIGHEST POSSIBLE RESULT, A PARTICULAR QUALITY OF PRESENTATION WITH CRITICAL ANALYSIS SKILLS.
